The Irish have paused their practices for today and maybe tomorrow. No reports that there has been a spike amongst the football team, but that with the Univ taking a break from in person classes for the next 2 weeks they felt they needed to stop and talk to the players. "In light of the University's decision Tuesday to move to remote instruction until at least September 2, and in an abundance of caution, Notre Dame football will not practice Wednesday and possibly Thursday. As has been the case since the team's return, testing results will be made public when they become available." 5COMMENTS The Fighting Irish players surely had plenty of questions following yesterday’s announcement from Father Jenkins. Everyone knows how challenging it will be to defeat COVID-19, but it will take getting everyone on the same page to combat this “formidable foe.”
Big Ten Commissioner speaks for first time since cancelling football for this fall. Not exactly a leader in the public relations field? THE BIG TEN Email this ArticleShare on RedditShare on TwitterShare on Facebook332 37 COMMENTS Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren went more than a week without a public appearance following the conference's postponement of its fall athletic season. Warren finally broke his silence on Wednesday in an interview with the Sports Business Journal, but he offered no new information or insights about the decision or the Big Ten's plans going forward and did not really address the reaction to the decision from around the conference.
This just in from 11warriors.com. BIG TEN COMMISSIONER KEVIN WARREN SAYS DECISION TO POSTPONE FALL SPORTS “WILL NOT BE REVISITED” IN OPEN LETTER
NCAA has recommended that players get an extra year of eligibility. 6 years to play 5. I doubt if there will be a mass of players coming back for that 6th year. But certainly some would, esp if there was an injury that waylaid them in their 5th season. Already teams have had season ending injuries to some players, if you were a 5th year guy that in ordinary times meant the end of your career. I could see some of those guys taking advantage. What are Big 10 teams doing right now? No season, but are they working out and practicing? The NCAA has issued guidelines that would allow teams not playing this fall to have workouts, film sessions, on the field coaching with no hitting, etc. DI Council recommends fall championships move to spring
Terry, we are in limbo for the time being, players can participate in drills for 12 hours each week. Screw Kevin Warren!
For those who like to follow recruiting...Archie Manning's grandson, Arch Manning, is a hot prospect for the 2023 class at QB. Currently the top ranked QB in his class. Goes to the same private school that Peyton and Eli went to in New Orleans.
He's only the messenger. Your ire is misdirected. If you want someone to be screwed, it's the university presidents. This column explains clearly where the blame lies; how the presidents have gone into hiding and how the ADs have mismanaged the communication, leaving Warren to take the heat. https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/2020/08/20/stop-blaming-big-ten-commissioner-kevin-warren-halting-football/5617842002/?for-guid=294e2edb-e8ea-4795-830d-3b6f3f3e7254&utm_source=indystar-Doyel on Demand&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=baseline&utm_term=list_article_thumb
Thanks for the link Sid, Mr Doyel was pretty upset that's for sure... Meanwhile, the president at Minnesota said last week that there might not have been a vote among Big Ten presidents. In fact, she suggested, there was no vote. “We didn't vote, per se,” Joan Gabel said. Some advice: When people start talking Latin, make a run for it. They’re equivocating, another word for lying.
Sid, I agree that article adds a lot of information that is very contradictory to what I have been reading. Thank you for sharing.
NCAA has granted all fall sports athletes a freebie, doesn't matter if they play, don't play, play in the Spring...this season doesn't count. The NCAA hasn't made an announcement as to how they will handle the scholarship limits for the various sports. The Irish have 14 players who in ordinary years, this would be their final year. They can all come back in 2021, but that would not work if we are still at 85 scholarship limit. __________________________ Imagine four-year Notre Dame starting quarterback Ian Book – despite not taking the job until his third year on campus. Or seventh-year senior Shaun Crawford. Or third-year freshman Brendon Clark. There’s now a path for those oddities, and many others in a similar mold, to happen in college football and other fall sports due to the NCAA’s Friday afternoon ruling on fall sports eligibility. The 2020 fall sports season – whether it is held as scheduled, in the spring or not at all – will not count toward a student-athlete’s eligibility, the NCAA announced Friday. It’s a free year, essentially, and comes with potential to shatter school and NCAA records and alter scholarship limits for several seasons. In football, anyone who plays a full year (if able) will keep that year of eligibility. The ruling was expected after the NCAA Division I Council approved the plan Wednesday. It’s the same ruling as the one issued in the spring. Players who were set to exhaust their eligibility this season who choose to return to their teams will not count toward their team’s scholarship limit. The team is under no obligation, though, to invite them back and can reduce or not renew the athletic financial aid they were previously receiving. The NCAA also said schools cannot reduce or cancel aid for anyone who opts out of this season due to COVID-19. They cannot require athletes to waive legal rights regarding COVID-19 as a condition of participation. Eligibility clocks were extended for all players. For example, a freshman this fall can be classified as a freshman next fall and still have five years to play four seasons. Adjustments to athletic scholarship limits have not been announced, though extending all eligibility clocks makes amendments to those limits necessary. The other option is to not count any current player toward the scholarship limit after his or her four years are over but choose to use their remaining eligibility.

Minor sports all across the NCAA are going to pay a price AJ. Iowa just announced it was cutting a number of sports. More programs will be doing the same.
LSU has closed their campus, football team still a go. I think we are going to have a unique situation where there will be many colleges with no students on campus and yet we still have football. With no students the players will be somewhat en-bubbled on campus, practice and online line learning. ND Ath Director, Jack Swarbrick, at one time said he couldn't envision football unless there were students on campus. If the Irish end up sending students home, will they shutdown football?
Terry, I do not see Notre Dame playing football if students are sent home. That would be a difficult pill to swallow for a great academic institution like Notre Dame.
This is a followup to Sid's post from the Indianapolis Star a few days ago. From 11 Warriors.com this morning: ' THE ADs WANTED TO PLAY. It makes sense that the Big Ten's decision to ax its fall athletic season went against the wishes of every single athletic director in the conference. It also makes sense that Gene Smith was one of the strongest proponents for playing a fall season. But it doesn't make sense that Kevin Warren – who was notoriously in favor of moving the season to the spring early on – put himself in the position to represent those athletic directors in talks with the presidents? The Iowa, Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State presidents did not vote for dismissal of the season. I would not call that a unanimous decision.
With the information that come out about Big10 AD's all wanting a season is there any realistic possibility of the decision to not play until Spring is reversed?
