He also has an interest in law. I don't mind any of those things that he's interested in. Just so long as he doesn't decide to become a combat journalist down the road. I'd just as soon he stay in the Corps and stay armed if that's the case. :)

I still don't understand what program Carson is in with the Marines? Is it just a regular reserve program or something else.

    Re: The Marines

Yes, he will be in the regular Marine Corps reserves. He will also complete (hopefully) the Platoon Leader's Course in one of his first few summers. I am hoping he attempts to get in and finish it his freshman year.

Once he graduates college, he wants to enroll in the Marine Corps full time. However, if he decides to go the PLC Lawyer route, he would not be commissioned until he graduates Law School.

    Re: Rifleman

I think Carson really enjoyed talking to AJ and it cleared some things up for him in a positive way. When people try to tell him that he should be going to the Navy or the Army and then they ask him what specialized training he'll be getting, his answers are usually 'the finest' and 'every Marine is a rifleman first."

As for my comments about I'd rather he stay in the Corps than be a combat journalist, I think it's pretty obvious. Only one of them is armed and gets to fight back..or as is usually the case with the Corps, take the fight to the enemy.

Re: How the two tie together (college and Corps)

I think he's looking at red shirting no matter what his freshman year. In college, there is no 220 like in HS. So he either strips down weight to 190 (which the Corps will probably do to him naturally), 214 or he'd have to bulk way up to be a true college heavyweight. Carson has already shown that at 225 to 250, he can regularly beat guys who are 285. The problem is that there is an established upper classman at both the Heavyweight (285) and 190 weight class for Huntingdon.

The Marine Corps is clearly a part of his future and it is something he wants very much. Rather than doing the freshman redshirt routine which is usually a whole lot of nothing except weight lifting, he's already spoken to the Coach about his commitment to Huntingdon and the Corps. He could spend his freshman year knocking out boot camp, and combat training, before he starts school. Then, in the summer after his freshman year hopefully, he knocks out the 2 six week sessions for PLC. That would leave him coming back as a redshirt freshman with his entire college career ahead of him, but he'd already be ahead of the game with the Corps so to speak. It would be a really hectic first year for him, but it would put him in a great position.

Also, I'd bet cash money that after boot camp Carson will wind up wrestling at 190 in college and not heavyweight.

It will be a challenge but he really seems like this is all he wants in the world right now, so I'm betting that he's up to it.

    Re: As a parent

Naturally, I worry. I worry a lot. It isn't just this administration. It's just the state of the world we live in and the path that it's on. I am hoping he sticks with Journalism or Law. If he changes his mind and decides to take a more combat related role, then so be it. It's his life and this is what he wants, who am I to deny that?
