I have been trying to tell him the same thing George. The Ohio State team this year was not picked to be in the Championship game by many experts. They did it by having a good year while every team around them kept falling by the wayside. So you got to the Championship game with a very young team and lost to a team that had a lot of upperclassmen was fast and physical. LSU should have never lost two games this year, but they are a team you would not want to play when it's one game and everything is on the line. It kind of reminds me of the 95 Gators who made it to the Championship game and were beaten much worse than you were last night by Nebraska. We came back the next year to win our first National Championship. The talking heads have to have something to write about so dwell on the two losses, I think that a short time after the game is over the kids on the team move on and it does not affect their future games. I sure don't see why it has to be a long year for you, I kind of imagine you have a lot more important things in your life than letting this loss affect your whole year. Hey I'm rambling, have a god day
LSU looked awesome last night. That should not be a reflection on an OSU team that was picked to finish 3rd in the Big Ten.
The Detroit Free Press this morning is brutal on the Buckeyes. The main headline is in big bold type " TWO EASY " Another main column by a senior writer is entitled: "For OSU, It's the pretender bowl again..." The column is very brutal on the Buckeyes and if it is indicative of what is being said around the country then I wouldn't want to be a Buckeye fan right about now. Again... if anyone wants to spew venom towards me personally for reporting this fine... but it certainly is the story in college football right now. I would say just man up and realize that OSU had a pretty good team and made it's way to the title even if they once again fell short to SEC ultimately. It's not a crime.....
I would expect a Detroit paper to give no quarter to Ohio State. That's no surprise. I disagree that the prevailing story is the Buckeyes' futility of the past two championship games. The media darling this morning is questioning whether two or three other 2-loss teams should have had the chance to play in the game. If I'm a Buckeye fan today, my sadness is effectively countered by the thoughts that, 1) We've been there two years in a row, and 2) We have a very young team with very few seniors, so the future looks very bright. Let the mentally challenged idiots out there like TB and the Detroit Free Press wail about the inferiority of OSU or the Big 10 or the superiority of the SEC. People who crow and/or criticize after the fact tend to make fools of themselves in a public forum even if they don't understand themselves how foolish they look.
A-men Sid. You know the Buffalo Bills under Marv Levy took a lot of heat for losing the Super Bowl games. What got lost in the process is that even if the Bills were losing Super Bowls to the NFC, they were by far, and I mean by far, the best team in the AFC those years. As a Dolphin fan it always upset me that we just couldn't beat them. So they had trouble in the Super Bowl, other AFC teams would have lost even worse at that time. Buffalo was a good team that just wasn't as good as sever NFC teams and they got a bum rap. Ohio State is getting a bad rap by the nay sayers right now also. How quick we forget them taking it to Miami who was every bit as good, if not better, than last years Florida team and this years LSU team. I sure wouldn't lose a lot of sleep if I was a Buckeye fan, over a 100 other teams would have given anything to be in their place last night.
I went to bed right after the game so I didn't see any of the post game stuff..people are posting that the LSU players messed with Urban Meyer and that he didn't look too happy about it. What'd they do?
I read somewhere that there are only 5 seniors on the OSU team and 3 of them are FBs. I don't know if that is fact, but if so, they certainly have a bright future.
The Buffalo Bills PLAYED their way through an NFL schedule and the playoffs to make the Super Bowl. The Buckeyes beat not one top 20 team enroute to being SELECTED for the national title game by votes and computers. Therein lies the open door for criticism.
Terry, one of the LSU players was standing behind Meyer and ruffled his hair. I wouldn't say he didn't look happy, it was just a spur of the moment thing. In fact I saw a smile right after. He was also asked what the thought about the LSU win and he said he thought the SEC just got tougher. I think whoever said that about Meyer not looking happy was just looking for something their self. I actually think it showed the LSU players had some respect for him because he wasn't doing anything other than being happy.
Here is what tempers Ohio State's or any teams future... after three years of eligibility many players leave. Watch the exodus from Ohio State and other schools now.
MCG, the Gators had 5 highly ranked freshmen that saw playing time this year on the DL. In addition what may have been the best Defensive Lineman, John Brown, was a redshirt this season after getting cleared late by the clearing house. I think just being a year older and stronger is going to make a major difference in our DL. I expect major improvement in our DL next season, and an overall major improvement in our defense. I happen to think that as kids move beyond 17/18 years old and they are dedicated they generally get stronger and better.
Thanks for the the thought Bobda, but I managed to find them myself. All of them.....and there are many! Congrats to the national champion LSU Tigers! They executed almost flawlessly.....Flynn and the offense were uncanny on 3rd down...as efficient a display of offense as one will see. 38 points on only 325 yards of total offense - 8 of 10 third down conversions in the first half. When we dropped back and covered he threaded the needle and when we sent blitzers he always made the correct read and executed. Well done young man.....their oline did a great job of protecting him. In a game where momentum is so very critical, we shot ourselves in the foot too many times....special teams has been problematic for this team all year and reared its ugly head again. You can't make the number of critical mistakes that we made - penalties, drops, missed opportunities and expect to beat a team the caliber of LSU. Doesn't happen....they were the better team Monday evening and are very deserving national champions. On a side note, rumors as to our demise are greatly exxaggerated! A run to a return trip to the national championship game was never expected with this young group and is an extraordinary achievement. We have 3 seniors in the starting lineup and 5 in the two deep....we may well lose 3 or 4 junior studs to the NFL's first round, but we'll be back and we'll be loaded - if they go or if they stay. If we take care of business next year as we have the past two, everything will take care of itself.....a trip to LA to tangle with the Trojans will be set the stage for the winner to be a favorite to go the Title game......and NO, I am not going back. My track record is 1-3 in national title games. I think they are trying to tell me something and I'm going to listen....
I've learned some interesting things in this topic that I had not known previously: -OSU was picked preseason to finish third in the Big 10. -OSU has 2 seniors among the starting 22 players. -OSU has some juniors who may come out early for the NFL draft. Stay tuned on this aspect of the OSU team. -LSU was a senior-laden team. -(I knew this) LSU was a consensus preseason pick to be in the championship game. Based on the regular season records of the two teams and the above information, the logical conclusion would be: 1. OSU overachieved by winning the Big 10 and getting to the championship game. 2. LSU underachieved in the regular season but eventually lived up to expectations in winning the championship. How in the world could any negative commentary toward OSU be credible? Who cares if the drive-by media and the agenda-driven fans of other teams criticize OSU for losing two years in a row? Such drivel is meaningless and shows how uninformed and knee-jerk the critics are. By the way, my definition of drive-by = too lazy to do research and interested only in attracting attention.
Here is one of two articles in the Detroit Free Press this morning about basically the same subject. Man...they are skewering OSU around here and I suspect you can find this same kind of commentary in newspapers around the country except perhaps in Ohio. Call this drive-by if you want but it is prevalent Sid....not a shot in the dark. Should Ohio State lose at USC next year and then breeze through the Big Ten schedule yet again they will have tons of detractors out there and few national supporters for a return to the NC game. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080109/COL08/801090320/1048 However....if....IF.....the Buckeyes beat USC then I am going to say they will negate this whole premise and would most likely be welcomed back to the NC game in Miami. The point is that just getting through the Big Ten is not going to cut it.
Darn good analysis Sid, I agree with every word you wrote. Class act as usual BT. I remarked to my wife late in that game that two plays kept it from being an exciting ending. The TD that the Ohio State player seemed to have in the end zone and the roughing the kicker penalty. That game could well have been tied in the 4th quarter. However at the end of the day I do agree the best team won. MCG, that article is not about Ohio State, it's about the Big 10 and their commissioner and their attitudes to a plus one or playoff. It more appropriately belongs in the Topic Tom stated this morning about the University of Georgia President pushing for a playoff. I do think the Big 10, Pac 10 and Rose Bowl need to re-evaluate their position or yes there is a possibility of the rest of college football moving on in spite of or without them. No way the Big 10 is irrelevant, but I personally am one that would like to see the 8 team playoff move forward, I would hope it would not be without all the big players but would be willing for that to happen if some of them did not want to join in.
