kp, I think it is not so much what Meyer was guilty of, but President Drake had to fire him or suspend him and his AD (Gene Smith). Either way, it's a public relations nightmare for the university.
Ok Don, I guess I thought it was pretty cut and dried. Why the abused wife didn't go the police first is a question, but after hearing the news this morning it appears Meyer knew about the abuse and didn't report it to anyone else. :x
I don't really know what to think. Urban apparently didn't help his credibility when he deleted all the texts older than a year. Ohio State is getting criticized in the media for their action. I read a opinion piece on CNN that said it's clear that when winning meets morality, that beating Michigan means more. I'm not so sure that's fair but that's what is going to be the theme by writers who feel Ohio State didn't do the right thing. One thing for sure, a precedent has been set now, coaches are responsible for the actions of their staffs in regards to abuse and probably other things, even if no charges are filed and there is not a criminal case. I don't think anybody thinks abuse should be ignored by the Universities, it's always been the case that many abusive relationships go on for years, with the abused party even blaming themselves at times. It's not just the ath dept either, Universities are having to deal with abuse by anybody in their sphere, students, faculty, staff, etch. But times have changed and you can bet Ath Depts all over the country are having meetings or planing meetings to try and educate and develop policies and make sure they are followed. It will be tough on a coach who has a staff full of guys who he has coached with and become personal friends with to now insert themselves into monitoring marriages and relationships. It's one thing if they truly don't know as the couple keeps their problems to themselves and nobody knows. But in Urbans case a lot of people knew, Courtney Smith reached out to all the wives of other staff members including Shelly Meyer.

There was no "cloud" of any sort at Florida when Meyer left... except for his health issues. I do think OSU will take a little bit of heat for the 3 gamer but in the long run Meyer will keep coaching and the Buckeyes will keep winning and by next season this will all be old news.
Not surprisingly there is no support for Urban and Ohio State out there amongst fans of other programs. Reading the InsideTexas board they are pretty brutal as is the Notre Dame board. Don't really read other boards but I imagine there is little support for OSU anywhere. I wonder what Herbstreit will have to say, or if ESPN/ABC will allow him to talk on the air about it.
Terry, I had 40 plus sailors working for me at several different Naval Air Stations and if I learned of spousal abuse, there were specific people I had to notify. I had no choice. If a friend was involved, it was more difficult but the process was there. This isn't that difficult. Now Ohio State is not the Navy but apparently they did have a process in place.
Jermaine "Funny Maine" Johnson just tweeted that the "Cover Up Classic will be played September 29th." It was certainly chuckle worthy.
That doesn't appear to be the case here....Michelle Herman was her closest friend and is on record... "....Michelle Herman told me this Tuesday about Courtney Smith via Messenger: “She never told me she was being abused. She never told anyone she was being abused. Nobody saw any abuse.†“We were close. I am not saying we weren’t close. We just weren’t that close while we were there. I wouldn’t call her my best friend, either.†The ex-wife did text with Shelly Meyer but Shelly has indicated that she was always skeptical of her claims since her dishonesty was evidenced in the initial "incident" in Florida No wins available here....just an ugly spot in which to find oneself
:? I don't understand any of this. It looks to me like Urban hasn't done anything wrong and his assistant coach's ex-wife is trying to ruin him.
kp, Rumor is that one of the trustees, (female) married to a billionaire here in New Albany forced the issue and President Drake came forth with the three-game suspension. Money and politics all at one time??
Well Urban issued his apology (his initial response to at the press conference was absolutely putrid), so I guess we can all move on and look forward to 'The Cover-up Classic' on September 29th. Jesus, this will be like watching a New York Yankees vs San Francisco Giants World Series
He was tried in the court of public opinion and found guilty of inducing a media frenzy by not being completely precise with his communications to the media about a personal matter between an assistant, his wife and their very troubled marriage in spite of the fact that law enforcement was aware, involved from Day 1, completed an extensive investigation and concluded that no charges should be filed. Still trying to understand the whole "cover up " thing.
Buckeye Terry, I think the paid administrative leave tag caused people to believe Urban was going to be fired. When that did not happen, people went berserk. Almost like the Democrats when Trump was elected president. :
Here in Florida this redneck right wing voting state is about to turn Gov. Rick Scott into a U.S. Senator even though it's pretty unbelievable that he was the CEO of a company that was defrauding medicare under his watch to the point of incurring a record 1.7 billion dollar fine. If all those millions of voters in Florida can look the other way on that and accept that Scott "had no idea anything was wrong" then I say we must accept that Urban Meyer knew nothing of the spousal abuse problem with his assistant coach.
They fined him and suspended him, for nothing? He didn't lie, he misspoke? I have nothing but respect for our Buckeye fans here but I think you're a bit close to this situation to see just how bad it looks from the outside. (it looks really bad, thus the 'Cover-up Classic') Jesus, this guy even got 2 swings at a softball question about what he'd say to the battered wife. Maybe if this were ND, I'd be defending Kelly? I kinda doubt it, but maybe I would. But like I said, it's now football season. It's time to move on. Urban got a 3 game suspension. The process has run its course. Nothing to see here folks.
