This story isn't over yet. There's a reason he left his dream job. And I don't think it was his choice.
Ironically enough, I'm watching the movie Inception while reading these theories. I think he's done. At the same time, if USC came around throwing profane amounts of money, or Notre Dame for that matter, I think he'd at least listen to what they have to say. Two very different schools with two very different sets of guiding principals and moral ethos. Still, I think he's done.
Sure Don, I FEEL, that Urban was ushered out by Gene Smith and company. I believe it's mostly the drama we all witnessed at the beginning of the season, and then a combo of feelings and disagreements that clashed with personalities along the way. At a level of administration in a powerhouse football program like that, those intangibles can carry more weight than the tangilbles. We saw a somewhat similar scenario here with Pelini. I dont gave any sources other than what I read or hear from the talking heads. Then I just make an assumption. I think there's more to the story than what was delivered. That's my 2 cents.
AJ, I guess I was reading more into the remark in a negative way. You may be dead on in your remarks, but I doubt that none of us will know for certain. I do know that Urban was very upset with the suspension of three games and I would be too in that type of situation.
Been out of town for a couple of weeks. His record at OSU was 85-9 over 12 seasons. That is unbelievable, an average of just over 12 wins a season. He also resigned at Florida two times over health issues. The first one was withdrawn and he took a leave of absence then coached one more year and wasn't the same. Then he resigned after that season. A lot of Gators were surprised when he took the Ohio State job not to long after that. Apparently the health issues resurfaced and the drama at the beginning of the season didn't help. I have to wonder if AJ doesn't have a point. Regardless his record is right there at the top and 3 national championships will always have him as a special coach. I don't know much about the new coach but it looks like this plan was in place.
Well if it wasn't completely Urban's idea then my speculation that USC could be his next stop might get legs.... Actually since I made that remark I have seen articles written in which the same thing is written about.... Meyer to USC for big big $$$$$.
Well since USC has doubled down on Clay Helton, it'll be a couple of years before the USC job comes open at the earliest. If Helton does well then it'll be longer. How long till the rumors that Urban Meyer is seen with realtors in the L.A. area! We had those for a couple of years in Austin with regards to Nick Saban, and Jon Gruden's wife was repeatedly reportedly meeting with realtors in South Bend and Knoxville when those jobs were open.
I was listening to ESPNU this morning and some reporter who I guess lives in Columbus was on, and he was singing he praises of Ryan Day, said he's highly sought after, really gets what it means to be a Buckeye, and will knock'em dead on the recruiting trail. When you think about it somethings are changing with younger coaches getting shots at big jobs. Lincoln Riley at OU, Sean McVay at the L.A.Rams, just to name a couple. Bob Stoops was pretty young and with no HC experience when he took the OU job. So it definitely can work, even at big time programs.
Gotta disagree with AJ...though I certainly have no inside knowledge. I think Gene Smith would love to have him for another bunch of years. I think it was mainly the health and stress thing...and partly the Zach Smith controversy. He said that he's been getting calls from recruits...asking if he was going to be there for 4 or 5 more years...and that was part of it also. But what do I know?
And it could be as simple as that also Stu. I'm just looking at track records, and the fact that this guy loves to coach. He's only what...54?
Yes, 54...but I don't begrudge him that...I retired from my first career at 53 and took up something I enjoyed more and paid 1/4th what I was making. He's been under lots of stress and as far as I'm concerned deserves a nice, relaxing retirement doing whatever the hell he wants to do.
