He was a coach at a SWC team when the quote was made.

Two excellent guesses but this one should give it to you. After leaving the SWC school and spending two years at what some consider a lesser school, he left for an independent. Now how many know who made that quotable quote?

    Dr. Lou it is!

I almost made the mistake of saying that he was at an SEC school but he was at Arkansas while they were still SWC.

In the last hint, I was going to say that he went to a "Little Known" independent as a joke but thought, nah... that might be taken the wrong way.

Lou Holtz Left Ark (a SWC school at the time) or was gently pushed out the door, for Minn then on to ND. I can't believe it took me this long! :)

I thought that I had already posted this one but I don't see it. Must have just previewed instead of submitting:

Oops! I posted it in "CFN: ND preview"

    ...and MCG guessed Joe Pa.

Sorry Dave. I think that Joe Pa became the head coach at Penn State around 1965 or 66. The person that said this got a 14 or 15 year head start as head coach at his university.

I deleted that message and Dave's reply from the other topic

Vince? What university did he coach at?

I guess that you would try to count a strike in bowling when it happens with your ball three lanes over to the right.

Let me translate: Not even close!

Nope, the Swamp Rat would have been much later than the last clue.
