I'll take your word that for Dan Fouts it was Oregon or bust, but that only points out that not all great college players can be identified by their HS careers, just as not all great NFL players can be identified by their college careers. I don't know the circumstances of Bradshaw ending up at La. Tech, was he a great HS player who just wanted to go there, or was he a kid who wasn't noticed by LSU and had to go there. You didn't mention Ben Rothlesberger of the Steelers, an Ohio boy who didn't play at OSU or anywhere in the B10 instead ended up at lil ol' Miami of Ohio.
LOL...glad to see you still around Ralph! There is definitely some fan backlash at the media's fascination with Tim Tebow.
Corey, first I don't remember giving Leinart any heat and if he got some it sure didn't seem to matter. I don't know the circumstances of why he took only one course but I believe Tebow has worked it out where that's all he needs. I don't have any problem with either one of them. Now Deion Sanders took courses his senior year at FSU, didn't attend classes and failed them all. Due to that the State of Florida now has what is known as the Deion Sanders rule where if a football player doesn't perform to some minimum standard during the season he is not eligible for a bowl game. RECane, pretty funny. Welcome back, stick around.
My issue with the "Greatest of all time" is this: That is exactly what we heard about Danny "the second coming of Christ" Wuerffel. Yes, he was/is a special person. However, he was a slightly above average QB playing on a great team. I believe we are seeing the same thing with Tebow. I will wait until he gets picked by the last place NFL team and see what he can do playing with a bunch of Bozos. We'll see just how great he is at that time.
Tom, both Wuerffel and Tebow fit the scheme of the coaches they played for and were/are great college QB's. You may think Wuerffel was slightly above average, but I watched him for four years and would disagree completely. He had as much to do with making the other players good as they did with him. Florida was a different team when Danny was at the helm than when one of the other QB's were running the team. Slightly above average players do not make that much difference in their teams. And I might add that in my opinion a great college player does not always translate into a great NFL player and that takes nothing away from their accomplishments in college.
Bill, Until your cheerleader puts down the pom poms, the discussion is sickening and will generate posts like mine.
Thanks for the warm welcome guys!! There are many players who fit this mold but to me Kenny Dorsey comes to mind. He was 152 lbs (soak & wet) of walking brain matter that orchestrated a 38-1 record that included a national championship and played for a second. But he was no where close to being "true" NFL talent. Tebow might be the real deal in this department but lets give the young man a chance to earn it before he is crowned. RC
Tom, I have nothing to say except that this topic has generated some pretty lively discussion about Tebow as well it should because it is one of the coming year's top stories. That statement is so true and the debate is not about greatest college player who ever turned pro and was a great pro player too. It's strictly about college performance and right now Tebow is up near the top and rising. I watched the 2008 4th qtr vs. Alabama recently and Tebow was phenomenal, wouldn't be stopped and was mistake free under tremendous pressure. He already has the stats but he also has the heart of a champion.....not to mention the rings.
Well to start with he is not my cheerleader. Secondly if you choose to let MCG affect your feelings about the discussion being sickening then that's your choice. But it kind of strikes me that if you say Wuerffel was just a little above average college QB that's your choice but like I said I watched the guy for four years and he was hardly only a little above average. He was good enough to win the Heisman over Manning who was hardly chopped liver.
I know how you feel Dave, I still rub one off to the 2nd and 3rd qtrs of the 96 Fiesta, sans the tremendous pressure portion...
I do remember Favre's lowly So Miss team going into Bowden's backyard and knocking off the highly rated 'Noles back during their hey day.....if not mistaken, the young Favre led a late game drive to pull off one of the great upsets of the time.....
That's what happens to you old guys.... That does it for me.....I do hereby nominate Brett Favre as the greatest ever.....!
Southern Miss 21 Nebraska 17 Sept. 11, 2004 -- 11:10 a.m. CDT, ABC regional Memorial Stadium, Lincoln The one friggin' game I take a Skyboxer to... And the 2nd one has to be against Texas...
