Well the Dodgers opened the wallet for Mookie Betts! He'll be 40 when they finish paying him off, I wonder how long it will take for this dream deal (13yrs/380M) becomes intolerable and he won't report to camp unless it's redone?
These contracts for 10 years or even more, just don't make sense. Sure at 27 he's a great player and worth being paid top dollar, will he still be worth top dollar even 5 years from now? I remember the contract that Jeff Bagwell got at the height of his career, seemed good but his last few years were not good and the Astros were stuck paying him. They tried to induce him to retire but he wouldn't unless they paid him the full value of his contract. It was a mess at the end, he wanted (maybe needed) the full value of his deal. What if he has a great run and by the year 5 his contract doesn't compare to the new contracts younger players are getting...he'll want to renegotiate his lifetime deal.
Apparently "Black Lives Matter" will be stenciled on to the pitchers mound when the Yankees play the Nationals tonight. I'll turn it on just to let that political image burn in and then switch to anything else.
The Dodgers are ready. Where will the Blue Jays play? Pittsburgh turned them away and they now face the prospect of playing ALL games on the road. This is what happens when you place a major league team in a minor league country...
re: Yankees v Washington On ESPN . Pre-game was not shown live. Both teams took a knee before the National anthem in a hokey show of BLM solidarity. Announcers ( broadcasting from TV studio ) pointed out during broadcast that the Yankee team all stood during playing of anthem. I did not hear them mention the Nationals. Yankees had Hal Steinbrenner memorial patch on left sleeve. Above that patch was a BLM patch. The loud rumbling you may have heard during the broadcast was not thunder and lightning; it was George Steinbrenner turning in his grave. ESPN superimposed a BLM emblem on the pitchers mound for the game. Oh yeah, they played ball.
Well watching Brewers and Cubs right now. Didn't watch the start so have no idea about kneeling. The kneeling thing turns me off as much as it does George but I am still doing Fantasy with my long term partner. We have been partners since1992.
Didn't catch the start of the Astros /Mariners game so I don't know what was done, but I suspect it was the same. I see that Gerrit Cole looks a good investment for the Yankees
Verlander was in classic form, almost unhittable...except as we've seen when you do hit him it goes out of the park....2 gopher balls tonight.
This is what the Astros/Mariners did before the game. The Mariners and most of the Astros players lined up along both foul lines of the empty stadium, then knelt during a moment of silence honoring those who have died during the COVID-19 epidemic “along with the lives lost to racial injustice,” in the words of stadium announcer Bob Ford. Most remained kneeling during a Black Lives Matter message featuring comments from several Black players and sponsored by The Players Alliance, and during narration by actor Morgan Freeman that concluded, “Equality is not just a word, it’s our right. Today we stand as men from 25 nations on six continents. Today, we are one.” All rose to their feet for the National Anthem, recorded by Lyle Lovett and projected on the ballpark video screen. Several Mariners players, including Shed Long Jr., J.P. Crawford and Mallex Smith, raised their fists during the anthem, but none of the Astros did so.
