Shane Lowry certainly earned his victory at the British Open and very deservingly as well. Turned out to be a great tournament for the Irish and their love of golf.
Yeah, I choked just watching. He played an amazing back 9 on the last day under a tremendous amount of pressure. Impressive, especially from the psychological side of the game.
I was very happy for Shane, esp given that meltdown he had in the 2016 US Open. That had to be weighing on his mind. I'm sure TV ratings took a hit without Tiger, Phil, Rory in contention. But it was a great story for the event. The Open is my least favorite Major, mainly because of the time difference that makes it hard to watch live and I'm just not a big fan of Links golf.
I watched yesterday’s round while on the North Sea. Had to watch the English feed. The good part was that there was only 1 hr. Difference. The broadcast was of very poor quality with 2 hrs. Of satellite breakup. Zero drama thanks to Fleetwood’s putter. The crowd was great.
Links golf is an Irish/Scottish type of course, typically seaside with no tree's. Course follows the natural contours of the land. The wind and elements are usually a big part of it, esp in Ireland and Scotland. The style of play has to reflect that. You can't play the same shots in British Open as you would at most courses in the USA.
I somehow stumbled back onto this coverage and like KP, was getting choked up for the guy. Every breath was tangible hanging on every swing only to be released after the lay of the shot was known. That was really something. Good for him and the Irish.
