Let me translate for those not familiar with Texas/aTm relations: He wants to see them do good as long as it does not hurt the Longhorns in any way, shape, or form.

Hey Gipper kiss my ass!!!! :p

Trying to be fair and objective about the kid he reminds me of Frank Gore. Frank had a severe learning disability entering the University of Miami and just got in by the skin of his teeth. With progressive tutoring and impressive effort he managed to raise his grades and survive in college.

And Tim you would be wrong about the University of Miami. They have higher than average standards to get in.

Actually the Univ of Miami is an excellent private school. The sins of Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson are one thing, but it's a fine academic institution.

<r>Just my opinion ...just an opinion. I could be wrong but it's just an opinion. Obviously they must lower their standards when it comes to academic standards for the football players. <E>8)</E></r>

    Tim,

Pretty much everybody does, except the Ivies. Even Stanford, ND, Duke, Northwestern all wouldn't be able to get most if not all football players in unless they were in special pool that had lower standards than the regular students.

But I understand where you're coming from, those old Hurricane teams were different than what is going on now with Miami. The current coach is a pretty tough disciplinarian and he's committed to changing the culture.

Tim, it's one thing to have an opinion, however when other facts are presented it's realistic to change your opinion.

Like Terry says almost everyone lowers their standards to accept football players.

Actually it could be put a different way. I'll use the University of Florida as an example. There is a difference in admittance standards and what it actually takes to get into school. For general admittance there are many more applications that people who will be accepted. A whole lot of the people who are eligible and meet entrance standards do not make the cut.

The football players who get into UF have to meet the minimum standards of the University but are not in competition with the bulk of the entering class.

Some people don't think that is fair, I do. The criteria for being a football, or other sports, are different than to go into the college of engineering. Most football players couldn't be egineers, and most engineers couldn't be football player.

So in that sense it isn't lowering standards it is meeting all the standards. And to be on the football team that means being able to play football. But the football players have to meet the minimum standards to get into school.

The University of Miami tightened their standards a number of years ago. To the best of my knowledge FSU still haven't tightened theirs very much.

You are taking this way too seriously and putting too much thought into it. If you think for one second I'll ever change my opinion of the "u"...forget it. What you think of them is your opinion and mine is well....mine. To me they will always be the the slime of college football. We don't have to got back to the Jimmine Johnson days either...seems I remember an all out brawl on the football field just a couple of years ago involving almost the whole miami team. you can dress up a pig but it's still a pig. The "u" as far as it's football team will always be the home of thugs/criminals/low life. Just my opinion. That's all I have to say on it.</t>

But Tim, we have a member here, with the complete opposite attitude of Gonzo, who represents the "U" very well. No matter what I think of the Johnson days, I will give the benefit of the doubt to the "U" to show respect for REC who has never displayed any Gonzoesque outbursts here.

Think of it as "holding back to show respect for REC."

No one hated Miami more than I during the days of Schnellenberger, Johnson and Erickson, but those days are long behind us. When they hired Butch Davis, Coker, and now Shannon, it was a clear sign that they wanted to move forward and separate themselves from the era of the crimicanes.

On top of that, REC is a class guy who is a valued contributor to this forum, and I would like to think that there are many more REC types among the U fan base than there are Gonzo types.

We all have our opinions. I'm just stating mine on this particular topic.

In all fairness... my favorite relative of Bliss' played for Miami during their criminal hay day. He's the nicest guy you'd ever met, pretty darn smart and runs/owns one of, if not the, largest wholesale food distributorship in the southeastern US.

We hang out almost exclusively during the family holidays, go shooting etc.. He'd be the first to tell you that not all guys who played there are like him.

At that same time, it should be considered that he would have played at Alabama (his best friend in HS was Jay Barker), his entire family went to Auburn..but neither recruited him. You can't blame the kid for going where he went.

I'm sure there quite a few regular guys during those days, and there are probably more now days. Randy Shannon seems like a no nonsense type of guy, and if you've read his story you'd understand why.

    We are to serious Tim?

What both Terry and I told you had nothing to do with Jimmy Johnson or Dennis Erickson, it had to do with admission policies at Miami.

You seem to hold a grudge for a long time.

Bill many ND fans still hold to the past where Miami is concerned and feel like Tim. I chose to move on and forget the past.

    I understand Terry.

I never had a very high opinion of Notre Dame, thought they were very arrogant.

However my association with all of you during the years changed my mind a lot, gave me a better understanding about what Notre Dame is about. I now have a great respect for Notre Dame.

    That's just me.
