To answer your question, Petty and Carey off the top of my head. You may not have made the argument, so forgive me for bringing it up, but having a bad game has been used to knock Bridgewater, Mariota, Manziel, and others out of the discussion, yet McCarron has been given a pass. I don't think a Heisman candidate should necessarily have to be lights out every game, but this year with so many outstanding players, McCarron doesn't make my top 5.
How do you quantify who is the "best player"? Could it be that kid at No. Illinois is the best player in college football, at his level he's awesome has great stats. Derek Carr sure give him some votes, he's awesome as well at his level and against the competition he faces. The kid from No.Illionois was awesome last year till he reached the Orange Bowl and he played his heart out no doubt but he didn't look awesome to me. It's not always about being the qb on the #1 team, RGIII was never that guy and he won. Sure a whole bunch of them are, but it's a subjective vote there is no way to compare Derek Carr to AJ McCarron...you might say that Carr would be every bit as good or better if he had Alabama around him...maybe he would or maybe he wouldn't. Players aren't interchangeable like that. I hope Bryce Petty finishes very strong so I can hear your argument why he's a system QB and doesn't deserve it. edit: BTW McCarron wasn't given a pass for that game, he was way down the list lots of guys ahead of him before and after that game, he's rising because the guys ahead of him are blowing it not because he's been given a pass.
KP, you are now feeling what I felt in 1997 when every spors announcer was trying to find reasons to give the Heisman to anyone other than Peyton... and they did.
Tom, You know, I don't know if McCarron has Manning's arm but I think his real value to Alabama is putting them in the right offense to capitalize on what the defense is showing. That is alot like Manning's value to Tennessee.
Terry, as we discussed, I don't have anything against Petty at this point. If he has an atrocious game against his only real competition, I will revisit my opinion. If he has his typically great game, then I see no reason to take him out of the discussion. Also as we discussed, that was the same point I made earlier, that others around AJ have fallen off, not AJ risen.
Kesley, you know what? That is what has been said about Alabama as well, except you can put it in a different light, others have lost, Alabama has just kept on winning. It's okay there are many qb's that are better than McCarron is. 8)
Well barring something dramatic Petty can take a seat with the other non candidates. Too bad it's been a great year for the kid.
I've figured it out. When these other guys have a bad game their team loses. When McCarron has a bad game, his team still wins. Ergo he must not be as good as those other guys. By jove, I've got it!
Look, I'm not so sure that McCarron is better than all of these other guys. I'm also not so sure that they are better than McCarron. I think he belongs in the the conversation. Heck, CJ Mosley may be a better football player than McCarron.
