sheet, if they can come up with player's tests at UT you know they can crank out a coach's test score i've taken that test and it is a breeze. SOS is just needling the new guy. Had Kiffin signed the contract when he called the kid?
Let's review what Tennessee's accomplished so far in coaching staff recruiting.... Defensive Coordinator consider by some to be among the greatest defensive minds in football, check. Offensive Coordinator with NFL experience as well as college coaching background, check. Recruiting Coordinator and Defensive Line coach with experience reeling in top talent from all over the country as well as head coaching experience, check. Young offensive-minded coach with experience recruiting top southern talent to a school that's difficult to recruit to, check. Offensive line coach with NFL experience, young and energetic, check. Not looking too bad in Knoxville in the coach recruiting game, let's see how that translates to the player recruiting game.... http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2008/dec/31/orgeron-chaney-join-staff/
With the love going on for Ole Miss right now, let's not lose track of the fact that this is the Ole Miss team built entirely by Coach O and he was dying to coach them. Now we can see why
NO, I was referring to ex-South Carolina assistant David Reaves who helped reel in some good recruiting classes to Columbia.
I'm not holding my breath but this could be huge..... http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jan/03/georgias-garner-interviewing-vols/ If Tennessee is able to close the deal on getting Garner back, you really will be able to hear the giant sucking sound. That sound will be all the top recruits in the Southeast heading to Knoxville. This would be the cherry on top. They may be getting a little bit of a late start to make waves this season but this staff should be a juggernaut in recruiting with or without Garner.
Interesting move for Garner, he was making a ton of money at UGA and UGA has been very successful on the recruiting trail. I wonder if he and Richt have grown stale and both feel they need a change or what. Maybe Tenn is offering a lot more money than UGA. It's not like he had a long history with the Vols before he went to UGA. Do you know what caused him to leave Tenn when Fulmer was the coach?
I dunno Bill.....10 or 11 defensive starters coming back for Florida plus Rainey, Demps, Moody, Nelson, Cooper, Thompson and Hernandez on the O....and maybe even Tebow. I think we will be in Ok shape for the Vols when they visit the Swamp....
MCG, Gator Bill, I think Florida is certainly the class of the SEC again next year esp. if Tebow returns. I'm not arguing that. I do think though that it's only a matter of time before Tenn. builds a program similar to USC if, and this is a big if, the staff remains intact. I can't imagine what recruit wouldn't want to play for the staff CLK is putting together. We'll see how that translates onto the field but you have to be impressed with the number of ace recruiters Tenn. is putting together. There are some rumors out there CLK is about to poach Florida coach Billy Gonzales as well.... As for why Garner left, Tom may be able to comment more in detail but there were rumors he didn't get along with Chavis. I think it was likely a money issue. According to reports he interviewed for the Auburn head coaching job so he's looking to move up. Tenn. is throwing money around for assistants so they could be offering a significant pay raise. If this staff translates to W's on the field, it could change the way teams approach coaching changes. It appears Mike Hamilton has set out with the intent to assemble the best possible staff instead of placing the total emphasis on the HC position alone. We'll see how it works out.
I agree that the Vols are putting together a tremendous recruiting staff and I also think you are spot on with the reference to going on the cheap for assistants. That has never made any sense to me, to have no budget for the head coach and then tell him he has to build a staff on the cheap. But it's common.
http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jan/05/garner-remain-georgia/ It looks like Georgia outbid Tennessee. Rumors are already flying that Sylvester Croom is next on the "want" list. Also, as I mentioned before, Florida WR coach and recruiting coordinator Billy Gonzales is said to be a target of the Tennessee coaching staff.
