I certainly understand the thought regarding Peyton coming home after his pro career and joining the Vols coaching staff. But the reality is that even with his great college career and his great Pro career nothing has prepared him for being a college coach. At ND we had former ND All-American and former 49ner's All-Pro and future College Football and Pro Football HOF member Bryant Young come home last season. He was a GA. Major Applewhite was always considered a coach on the field, he had to start as a GA. So I'm not sure what you expect out of Manning, head coach right away?
It's only my opinion - and I am an avid Peyton Manning admirer - but being a great player does not always translate into being a great, or even good, coach. One thing about athletes like PM is that they will retire as very wealthy individuals, which possibly could eliminate one essential ingredient of a good coach, hunger to succeed. Maybe not. For that reason, I am interested in following the progress of Bryant Young's coaching career. I'm sure he is very well off financially after his long and successful pro career. I would expect that Peyton would be an excellent communicator, and no one with a brain can question his desire to win and his intelligence re: Xs and Os. It could work, but I'd be surprised if he would pursue a coaching career after his playing days.
Cuttliffe is out, he told Tenn he's staying at Duke. I'll bet that was a tough decision, he has a lot of ties to Tenn, but he probably also feels that to bail on Duke right now would make him no better than Kiffin. Tom posted that the Air Force coach already told his team that he was not going anywhere, so unless he is a big fat liar and I don't think that's him. He's out. Tom might just end up with his wish Kippy Brown for right now.
Terry, Look three posts above your post about Cutcliffe. He was ready to come but wanted 100% control over staff selection and Hamilton wanted several existing coaches to stay. That was the show stopper.
Looks like MCG's sources may be correct unless this gun is still firing blanks I don't like this move. I'm not sure I can ever warm up to this move if it is true.
I just talked to Cindy on the phone. There is not very many things that would make us change our colors. Hiring a dooley might just be enough to put us over the top. Any room on the Texas or Nebraska band wagons?
Hey Tom, I can get you some good Orange and Blue gear. But don't forget this, you still have Pat Summit and Bruce Pearl. It is funny though that I've never really heard of this guy before. I'm not sure just how he's the best choice. But it's not my choice to make.
Noooooo.....please no Dooley's again in the SEC. No coach EVER pysched out Florida like Vince Dooley. If that guy had the slightest chance to win the cocktail party it was a done deal. If Florida was a prohibitive favorite over Dooley's Dawgs.....forget about it....the Gators fell on their arses. I hope he never listened or learned anything from his Daddy!
Dave, you can look at the Florida and Dooley years two ways. The Georgia domination over the Gators ended when he left or the Georgia domination over the Gators ended when Spurrier arrived. I'll take the latter and think the Gators are at a point where the name Dooley isn't going to affect the game. The team he puts on the field against the team we put on the field will be the deciding factor. Tom, what is the reason you don't want Dooley? He seems to have a good background and I am not sure his record at La Tech is relevant. It's not that I have any problem with how you feel, just as a rival I'm curious.
