The topic is about Seantrel as a "gangsta"......prima donna.... whatever you want to call him right now other than team player. I mentioned Phillips and drew the ire of my good buddy AJ....which is understandable. AJ and I have no quibble.....we just like poking fun at the other a little about our respective teams.
That happened in the 2nd qtr.....the game was still.....ok, your right Dave. No he wasn't. Grant would've ripped the leg off. I agree, we had some animals. But they we're FB animals. My point is the extra curricular actions shown by CFB the past 25 years. There always seems to be a "Gangsta" theme to it, to include the majority being associated with the SE part of the USA....IMHO. Example being, and no disrespect to Ralph, but how many times have we seen Miami involved with on field riots over the years? I know UNL hasn't been perfect, but they have been labled more of a "Substance" type of program instead of recruiting "style" over their history.
When NU leaves the cornfields and goes to inner city LA there's bound to be some bandanas in the mix. Same for UF recruiting the east side of Tampa, inner city Jacksonville and just about anywhere near Miami. That is who these kids are in many cases....probably out of the need to survive. It provides a daunting task for coaches like Shannon, Pellini, Meyer....you name it to mold these guys into good citizens. I think it is asking too much that you go into these areas and find athletes playing a physically violent game to be milquetoast.....mind your manners kinds of guys at the age of 17 or 18. As I say....the hope is that most can make big changes when they spend time in a disciplined program but sometimes they can't make that change and get shown the door....as Meyer has done to some of his more serious offenders and as Dooley just did with a two time offender in the Tenn program. FYI....one of those kids Meyer basically ran off is the new starter at Auburn for QB this year.
No it's not. It's the screening process before, the expectations interview during and the Discipline and accountability factor afterwards. Perception is reality. If it isn't being perceived, then guess what?
I absolutely agree with that statement. But it's a fine line on some of these kids. They grow up in neighborhoods you wouldn't want to be broke down in and I am sure it's not easy sometimes to see what the kid has in his heart during a short recruiting visit. Sure....some are slam dunks either way but you're not going to win many football games if you pass on "grey area" kids who may need a little work. The trick is you lay it on the line....provide that discipline and then boot their ass out if they can't seem to walk the line.
I think some of what you two are talking about is cultural differences for different sections of the country. What AJ sees he attributes to the SE part of the country. Ok, that's where we live and it's where we recruit. You bring players in for their talent and character. However the character part isn't a done deal for any 18 year old. That is part of what a good coach takes on, to help these players mature and build character during their college careers. But you are not going to make players from one part of the country be just like players from another part of the country. You are not going to make other programs act just like Nebraska fans act or vice versa. What you can expect is that you have coaches that help mold character and not just win games. The problem for the coaches is that if they don't win they don't stay so finding that balance can be tough.
It's more of the Marine and Marine DI Idealogy Bill... Cultures are cultures, but they're still in the USA. Good arm and good speed are God given, the rest you can teach, to include Gentlemanship. Accountability in all aspects, to include coaches across the country. If I see you do it, what will I do about it. I'm not talking regimented brainwashing here, Gentlemanship, that's all I ask. Pure and simple, stand up people. Gangsta style is not gentlemanship. I hate it when I see it, in every CFB program.
Not to border on racism......but at what point is "gansta" behavior sort of like Rap music. They both go hand in hand almost. So....we accept one form of inner city culture in Rap music ( although I can't stand it personally ) but we are all up in arms over the insinuations of "gangsta" behavior on the football field. That is what I mean when I say it's a product of the hood....all of it. It's the coaches job to stand between and say what will and will not be allowed and these gestures while being a part of the environment and make-up of these kids should be one of the first things to go and really....with the advent of celebration and taunting penalties I don't think you see it as much anymore but I'll bet it's still in the heart.
Well AJ, all I can say is that if you hate watching the Gators play then I would go tell you that you need to learn to be more tolerant. However if you are talking about the way Miami used to behave, used to being the operative word, then I would agree with you.
Bill, You know AJ... I know AJ... I don't think this was an attack on the Gators or the SEC. There are players on every team that have character flaws. If you think otherwise, I think that is a biased opinion. The key is to control that character flaw or get rid of them before they become a cancer on the team. Florida has done that. Tennessee has done that. Unless the conversation is about Bobby Bowden, I would say that all coaches/teams have done that. Now end this fighting among friends. 8)
Tom, of course all teams have some bad apples, but I think you have misunderstood my posts. However I don't need to argue the point and get cross ways with friends.
I guess I do have a disconnect here because I didn't see anything that could be assessed as "fighting". A little ribbing....met with some analytical response and counter-response. Seems like a good sports related discussion to me. A little debate and difference of opinion is pretty harmless. We are not all wrapped in plain vanilla and our differences are what makes this board special. If I want vanilla I'll stay over on Gatorsports and never venture out to see what the other guys are saying. Hey...I have personally spoken with AJ and I can tell you he is a guy I would like down a few with and talk Gators and Huskers all afternoon.
Bill, Relax partner, just making some observations I am......I really don't like the entitlement and ignorant style generation we have in today's youth, just rubs me the wrong way......then again, I wonder what Pops Martin was thinking from 1967 to 1975......Things could be worse though, just imagine if you were a USC fan on this board.... Here, to prove that I didn't mean any harm, I want you to read this.... FINALLY, A FEEL GOOD ENDING
See...now we're back to the gangsta thing... AJ talkin' and Dave dreaming about the bartender's tats... Scary thought; [/img]
