New competition for hogs in the area, this was last week south of me on another farm. The manager told me that he was wondering why the deer didn't want to leave the yard and his dog refused to go outside.... Note the bites on the neck....Florida panther Tom I agree on the issues with a charging hog and frontal shots, I have always had quick success shooting the base of the ear in bringing hogs down. I just need Scott and Corey to run around long enough to place the shot out my truck window....I hope they are in good shape
Yeah, Tom I know. If I get down to the 9mm I'm probably shooting over my shoulder as I dive in Ralph's truck! But like I said... if that hog get's through 30 rds from the rifle... i kinda deserve it. Ralph, are those cats coming near the homes and towns, or doing as they should and staying out in the country?
Scott they are staying way out in the country and bothering no one, coyotes are starting to be a problem in towns these days. This video is about as close as I have ever seen a cat come next to humans..We just don't have a large population of cats, they are slowly growing the population with the introduction of the western cougar as a breeding source but they are very scarce. http://www.khou.com/news/local/animals/panther-zips-past-woman-on-boardwalk/110310520
Okay yeah I'm bored tonight so I'm going to put you to sleep with what little I know on the Florida Cats... First thing, here is their range I'm just NE of area D but if you study the map you must understand no females have been seen north of the Calooshatchee River, only males have been tracked as they have a 150 sq. mile range. But not announced officially yet the Florida wildlife commission has been strategically moving females north of the river for 9 months. This means I may actually see a panther or two before I die, I've seen one and I spend my life in the outdoors...While some are happy with the establishment of females in new area the cattleman are highly pissed off. Reason is panthers are known for appreciating young tender new born cattle.. But don't fret the State will compensate each cattleman for every calf lost (Think higher calf loss than normal these days) unless you have cattle south of the river....LOL, yes if you have cattle in old established areas where panthers have lived sorry your shyt out of luck, no money for you...Well this has gone over like a lead balloon as ranchers in the southern tier are pissed they have no recourse if puss-in-boots makes a meal of their future rib eye.. And this is the vast knowledge I have, sorry it's in need of more enlightening..There are currently cats to the south and north of me, all within a mile or two so they are passing thru even though no one is seeing them. When the hog population goes down suddenly I will know they have arrived as this is the first sign... By the way we caught four hogs Saturday night with dogs....Come on panthers, get these nasty swine away from my farm..
One of the four we killed on Monday, they destroyed about five acres before we reduced the herd... About 200 lbs on the hoof, not huge but big enough..
This is for Corey... http://www.alloutdoor.com/2015/08/13/video-hog-speared-with-a-gopro-strapped-to-the-spear/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=SumoMe&utm_campaign=sumome_share
While I really feel no sympathy for the boar, I do agree with the writer. If you're man enough to stick it, then be man enough to finish it clean. No one is saying to go down there and stick it with a blade, but he could have gone down and finished it with that spear. Carrying a side arm would be another option, if you're afraid of coming down off the ladder and getting charged. Notice how they scatter like roaches when the light comes on. That's how I got stuck. It's hard to keep track of them all when they get to running. Of course, Scott could just sit there and spray the field
Ditto what Corey and the writer said. You certainly won't get a clean kill every shot, but you have a duty to make it as quick as possible. Damn right! 8) I got a new holographic reflex sight just for this activity!!
I'm in Scotts court on this one, let the bullets fly...I have learned over the years I really suck if more than two of anything is coming towards me and I'm shooting, I will miss everything...If one or two is coming my way they are going home as dinner... As far as the hog suffering, stickem again it's part of the fun...Cursed Hernando Desoto.....
Change of topic for a minute, last night we drained a reservoir to begin work on a 48" double culvert that had rotten boards that needed changed. We need to catch it now during our dry season or will never get the chance come mid June when the rainy season begins. My mechanic was helping out and was at the bottom of the reservoir working on the culvert by himself while my other guy was cutting new boards at the shop. He noticed that the birds behind him flew up all of a sudden and heard a rustling noise. This is what he found crawling towards him.... This is a big sow gator that has a nest nearby who diligently defends her nesting area.....He was disturbing her area... Her nest..
Yeah, you hear that distinct sound of baby Gators calling for Mom and you high tail it the hell out of wherever you are.
