lol...now it's being reported that he's staying at the U. No doubt he reads the Skybox and caught your post!
I say, why not? Why do I say that? A year ago, after South Florida's impressive season, he was rumored to be in line for the Arkansas job. This year, South Florida flopped (3-9, worst in school history), and he was fired. As a result, he no longer was a prospect for a "top" coaching position, so why not take a job with a historically successful "mid-level" program? If he meets the challenge of maintaining the success achieved under Sonny Dykes, perhaps he can work his way back back toward the top of the list for higher-level job openings.
Good move for Skip, not sure why he failed at USF or why they were quick to pull the trigger. I have to assume at least part of it must have had to do with some relationship issues with his AD or the Alums. It's getting pretty late for Skip though to make a big move as a HC, sure if he does well at La.Tech then he might get back to a mid level BCS conference job but I can't see him getting a big time job at this point.
I say good for Skip. He was trying to win at a commuter college in a state that already boasts Florida, Florida State and Miami. The conference affiliation and state of the athletic dept appear to be near turmoil. Sometimes, getting fired is a good thing. If USF is going to win, they are going to be a bit of a bandit program. That's just the facts of the matter. They are going to take kids that others won't touch. They won't ever have the facilities that the other big 3 have. That's not to say that a Jimmy Johnson type couldn't win there and win big. I believe they could. However, if you're not 'that guy' then it's best to gtfo. La Tech may well prove to be a decent place to be. As Sid pointed out, there may be some openings just yet that might take a run at him.
Dave could honestly fill in many gaps since he lives in Tampa but my take is that Skip Holtz was a good coach and the impatience of Div I schools these days waits for no man. USF is a large school and has moved out of the commuter school status the last few years with large enrollment and expanded athletic budget. The unexpected death of Leroy Selmon who was AD and a key booster for the program has not helped its push into "Big Play"...
