Both Weis and Meyer upgraded their position. That's how it usually works when you are trying to ascend. For either one ascending meant leaving. Saban meanwhile went for the gold and really....he was enticed more than he sought it out I believe so how can you blame him for that?
I'm not really sure what your point is here anymore Corey. Are you saying that once you take a HC job you have to stay for X years if you are successful before you can consider taking a better job? Are you saying that you have to announce to everybody way in advance that you will be leaving so that everybody will have a chance to make their plans and your leaving won't have a negative impact on them?
OK I will try a larger, slower bouncing ball: What I am saying is that you shouldn't lie about it. Call me silly, but I believe that if you tell the school that they will 'have to carry me out of here in a pine box'....and then 2 days later you take a job at another school...you're a son of a b*tch whose word means next to nothing. There are guys who move up and take new jobs all the time. A few of them have success... not all of them leave a trail of pissed off people in their wake who feel lied to. It was Bill who asked me to supply evidence that Urban was persona non gratis at Utah and Bowling Green. I simply provided it... In one of his statements, he clearly lumped Weis in with Saban and Tuberville. I didn't see that connection and asked for clarification. Its when I provide clarification that was requested, or ask for it, that you seem to lose me.
I just wonder if folks would hold the same opinion of Meyer - that he's a low-life lying sumnabeach - had he taken the ND job and led the Irish to an MNC in '06 of '07? 8)
Hell no he'd be a freakin' hero, ND fans would be talking about where to put up a statue of him on campus!!
hold your ponies <t>As happy as I was to have Lou Holtz as our head coach.. I also believe he mislead Minnesota and was wrong in doing so..<br/> <br/> Not all of us saint our head coaches.<br/> <br/> And keep in mind, I LOVED having Holtz as our coach.. <br/> <br/> But, for example, when I lived in MN and people still trashed Lou Holtz' name.. I respected their opinions because I considered them to be valid.</t>
Terry, you can always be relied on to put the proper perspective on situations. Thanks! Corey, you and I always seem to have a communication problem. You told about this fat guy who interviewed on Feinbaum and I said I was pretty sure I knew who he was and check around. It was Lamm, and I also told you he doesn't have a lot of credibility with Gator fans which is very true. I also said you could always find detractors of coaches including Weis. How that went to me wanting proof how Utah and Bowling Green fans felt about him leaves me scratching my head. There was never any doubt in my mind how some fans at those schools felt about him. In this day of the internet with anyone being able to express an opinion that is a no brainer. Of course some of their fans fell that way and since it is almost always the folks with strong negative feelings that respond there is no doubt that would be posted. Gaterz question and Terry's answer put things about Meyer pretty much into the proper perspective.
How? He had a specific out written into his contract if he was ever contacted by ND. How is that misleading? I don't buy it. Just because Minnesotans are bitter does not mean Holtz did anything wrong........which pretty much goes right back to your original premise of fact, that when coaches leave programs, there always are people who will trash them for whatever reasons.
two fold <r>Bill, when you say this:<br/> <QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> it would appear, to me, that you were asking for a source on that resentment..or at least an example of it.. as if to suggest it didnt exist..<br/> <br/> in turn, i supplied you with an example of each:<br/> <br/> Sid,<br/> <br/> Actually from Admins and former players of his at Minnesota. Their words, not mine. To Holtz' credit, I do believe he left the team once he knew he was taking the ND job. The same cannot be said for some other people mentioned previously in this thread.</r>
No once he took the ND job, Minn asked him to leave and named a interim to coach the bowl game. Which really is sort of the standard. Mack Brown left UNC immediately on taking the Texas job, did not coach the team in the bowl. I think there are a few cases of a guy staying, Meyer coached Utah in the Bowl, I believe the disgraced Wazzu coach did the bowl before leaving for 'Bama. Paul Johnson didn't coach Navy in the bowl last year. RR of course dumped WVA as soon as he took the UM job and didn't coach the bowl.
