You guys don't really think Weis is going to be fired this year do you? That would be one big financial hit with the long contract he has.
We're fans Bill we don't have to pay the buyout!! Weis has many historic lows on his resume' now that negate much of the good things he has done at ND. 1. 1st coach to lose to Navy, and the loss could be put on his poor game plan and questionable decisions during the game 2. Worst record ever for a ND coach last year. 3. Almost lost to Navy 2 years in a row. 4. First ND coach to lose to a 8 loss team. 5. Most losses ever in a 2 year period. And we still have to travel to L.A. to face a USC team that will likely beat us by 40 points or more. Now he might not get fired because the team doubled it's win total, and became bowl eligible. Maybe the new AD just doesn't want to fire him in his first 6 mos and maybe the new AD isn't prepared to do a coaching search. There's all kinds of reasons why he might not get fired. But if he is back next year it could be similar to the death march we all experienced in 1985 which was Gerry Fausts last year. Or of course it's always possible the team will play well in LA and go to a minor bowl get a win and have a very good year next year. But I have lost confidence in that senario, but it could happen.
My only point is Terry that the buyout is going to be very expensive. Somebody will have to come up with it if Charlie is let go this early. Frankly with the list you just presented and the result of the game today I understand the emotion but it's going to cost. Actually I am just wondering how much of a factor the long contract will be in the decision.
I'm sure Bill that his buyout and the length of his contract will be factors in keeping him or firing him. But Tenn just paid 6 million dollars to buyout Fulmer who after 2007 season was given a new long term extension and a raise. I think even Steve Spurrier commented on the size of Phil Fulmers buyout. I forget exactly what he said but it was a typical Spurrier quip. I'm guessing that a lot of these buyouts of coaches though aren't cash buyouts, that they are spread out over a number of years to the benefit of both sides.
The Irish have a 7 billion (with a b) dollar endowment. A buyout isn't the problem. To compare, the University of Florida (which is a fantastic school and funded as well as any other public institution) has a 1.219 billion dollar endowment.
Weis <t>Confidence....did someone say confidence?........I have absolutely zero confidence that Weis will ever win another game at ND........I'm sorry but this game against Syracuse took away any remaining optimism I had that Weis could get things going in the right direction....I don't care if he replaces his entire staff......it ain't gonna work. Charlie needs to go back to the NFL and ND needs to get a REAL college coach.</t>
Turning down a bowl at this point shows hubris? This team is undeserving and unable to defend itself at this point. Four more weeks of the same unproductive practices, coached by the same clueless staff is beneficial? Followed up by one more loss? USC needs an impressive win next week to guarantee their own positioning. Petey is gonna punk us and Charlie and he is going to do it big. Next week WE are Citadel. And seaking of hubris... and this started in the first qtr.... Notre Dame football players were pelted by snowballs from fans sitting in the student section during their loss to Syracuse on Saturday. "To throw snowballs at their own team, I didn't think that was a smart thing to do. I guess (they thought) it was funny," defensive tackle Pat Kuntz said after Syracuse upset the Irish 24-23. South Bend was hit with about 10 inches of snow Friday. While the field had been cleared before the game, there was still snow along the fringes and in some areas of the stands. Fans at first threw snow in the air, but then quickly switched to tossing snowballs toward the Notre Dame sideline. Defensive lineman Ian Williams got hit in the helmet, defensive end Ethan Johnson was struck on the left cheek and a St. Joseph County police officer on the sideline looking into the crowd got hit in the chest. An NBC camera man also was a frequent target and several snowballs reached the field, although none landed near where play was occurring. When the Irish defense held a meeting on the sideline, injured linebacker Brian Smith stood on a bench to try to shield his teammates. But when a snowball hit Kuntz, he stood and faced the crowd and appeared to challenge whoever threw it to come down on the field. "I was pretty mad about that, but whatever the fans want to do," Kuntz, a senior who was playing his last game at Notre Dame Stadium, said flatly. At least one fan was seen being led away by police.
Clausen is the least of our problems. If I though the Pats would take him back I would drive out to SB right now and help Charlie and family pack.
oh no george, This issue is MUCH bigger than this season. I was referring to previous years in which we opted not to go to a bowl and the bottom line is that bad practice time is better than no practice time. The ND fans are a very large part of the cancer that slows this program and until we realize that, it will continue. The people tossing snowballs, hitting seniors playing their last home game in the stadium...wrap your head around that for a bit. These are the same spoiled f*cks who whine about ND's 'barnstorming games' and how ND's 'real fans' won't stand for traveling to see ND for such a farce. For the past several years, I can't believe the things I see written by ND fans. People claiming they will refuse to support the team and openly make fun of anyone who attends these events... Whatever happened to the subway alumni being an integral part of the "NDNation"?!? We've become boorish snobs. We get left with a 3 win team and place 8 win demands on them. I'm not defending the loss to Syracuse. That is an atrocious loss and most certainly one of the worst in the history of the program. This is bigger than this week.. There's lots of blame to go around and that includes Chuckles...but to limit it to him is to perpetuate the problem. I would venture a guess that 2 of the more rabid, and downright brutal, subway alumni chapters are the NY/NJ and Southern California chapters. Can you imagine some jackass pelting the players with snowballs?!?
ND <r>Well even after a nights sleep, I don't feel any better about the 'cuse game. As an ND fan times like these make me want to totally disavow all my loyalty the the Irish and find something else in life that can replace the passion I feel for ND football.....but it ain't gonna happen no matter what I say or do. I'm doomed to just keep taking it year after year waiting for a real return to glory. I ain't getting any younger either! <br/> <br/> The trouble with wanting to replace Charlie is that unlike his predecessors, Charlie really does GET ND football. No one can say he hasn't truly tried to bring the program back. But he is just not a "college coach", whatever that really is. I like CW, but it's obvious that he is not going to be able to do it.<br/> <br/> He has the talent on hand right now to have had a successful season and should have gone 9-3 at worst, last season should have been 6 or 7 wins worst case also. IT ISN'T A LACK OF TALENT at this point. <br/> <br/> We may have to put up with CW for one more season, unfortunately it means we will probably miss out on coaches like Brian Kelly, who I am really starting to like a lot. I think ND needs someone like that.<br/> <br/> NFL coaches are NFL coaches and College coaches are college coaches, there aren't many who can be successful at both. <br/> <br/> My biggest fear now is that we will lose some of the great talent we have on hand now due to transfers if they get troubled by the coaching situation. It took so long to get recruiting for ND back to where it should be and that is probably CW's biggest single success while he has been at SB.<br/> <br/> Our coach is out there somewhere, hopefully we can find him soon and get him to SB and then truly start a return to glory.<br/> <br/> Excuse me, I need a stiff drink now. <E>:?</E> <E</E></r>
ND <r>Corey,<br/> <br/> Well they may be here in El Paso (Sun Bowl) before they play next year in San Antonio. the local media in going crazy at the thought that they might get ND here.<br/> <br/> <E>:?</E></r>
 Just to throw a wrench in .Joco is giving Charlie 1 more year only because he states" he has no juniors or Seniors that are his .... He was upset over the loss.... he blames the players not the play calling ... and he sd to tell you yes we have a better quarterback who is red shirting this year and why use him with 1 game left / We havent decided yet whether or not to use tickets offered to us to go to the game it is suppose to rain and Jim has already had 4 really bad colds this year. In fact he has no choice made him a Doctors apt this week ... He sd he still has faith in Charlie but he hates Ty even more for doing this to the school . Jim has usually right about this year lost faith in clauson though thinks he needs to get his head in the game 100% ,,,,,,, love ya all
Tim are they still high on ND at the Sun Bowl even after yesterday and what is likely a big blowout in L.A.? The L.A. Game is one that really scares me, Pete needs the BCS style points he needs to beat the Irish soundly, putting 70 points on us would make a statement. The main thing is that he can not afford to let us play him close even if we lose, so I expect him to do a Stoops and come out and try to sqaush us early and then just keep scoring as much as possible.
USC is going to crush us. In a game of wits against Pete Carroll, Charlie is unarmed. Pay special attention to USC's younger players, the sophomores and freshmen. It will be interesting to see if they are as "challenged" as ours. After all, they're young.
Very well written, Corey. Especially the part about the fans being a large part of the cancer. This season has brought forth an element that embarrasses me as an alumnus and a fan. The actions yesterday of some of the students is the turd on top of the sundae. Those spoiled little shits are so cocooned in their own world that they have no idea of the shame they have brought upon ther name of Our Lady's university. Ugh!
My two cents.... When watching Charlie and ND I don't think he is the guy. The real screw-up here was the dude that orchestrated his 10 year contract at ND. He must be having a little buyer's remorse at this point. Because of that ND really has no choice but to stick it out and hope Chollie's recruiting makes magic by itself....sorta Zook style magic.
 Whats going to happen to Charlie Weis now? Is the $25 million buyout clause the clincher in keeping him although he has the same exact winning record as Davie and Willingham? There must be more to it than merely changing coaches at ND....with such a premier class of recruits every year......and now the softest schedule ND can possibly put together....they still lose to an 2-8 team. Its got to be mental....wish I knew
Well I take a weekend off and enjoy my grandkids and the world nearly ends. As to the snowballs, if the students threw them, it doesn't surprise me. There has been no one more supportive of this team than the student body. But in the past month there has been a complete lack of effort on the folks wearing the ND football uniforms. I sensed it at the Pitt game, I saw it in the BC game and I was disgusted by it Saturday. Quite frankly I don't blame the students one bit if they threw snowballs at that group. They are a disgrace to the great players who have worn that uniform for decades. There were two teams on the field Sat. but only one really cared. Only one gave best effort. It's no surprise that that team one. As far as I'm concerned the players were lucky it was just snow. They could have been pelted with some of the crap they've been laying on the field. The offense led by the human pylons who make up the O line was just awful. But I have to hand it to the defense too because when the game was on the line they coughed up the winning touchdown. And how fitting on senior day that the winning TD was to a receiver "covered" by senior Bruton.
