As the rules stand now, neither Fields or Martell are eligible to play next year. Fields is suing the NCAA and playing the race card. Martell is suing citing the coaching change. In order to be eligible for the next season, you must graduate and have your 4 year degree. Now we have undergrads trying to cite 'hardships' to open that door a little more. If they both lose, they'll have to sit out next season.
I'll take a stab at it. A player can opt for the draft after 3 years in school. So a redshirt Soph is eligible regardless of how many games he's played in. The old transfer rules are still in place - you ordinarily have to sit a year when going from one "big" school to another. The hardships are things like injury or family issues, and are determined by the NCAA on an individual basis. Apparently as Terry said, Fields is trying to say "hostile environment" entitles him to a special hardship because he feels unsafe due to his race. Most folks think this will go through easily, but "not so fast". Fields' sister is heading to Georgia to play softball, so... if the family thinks it's a hostile environment based on race why are they letting her walk into it???? Tate M's case is much more sketchy. He seems to be applying for special hardship because the head coach that recruited him is retiring. Eh... um... NO. If the NCAA lets this one go, then forget any kid staying at a school, it will be a free for all.
George, the NCAA can not even answer your question![/QUOTE] Boy, the Buckeyes really can get screwed on this one. Lose your coach, your starting and backup QBs.
If precedent is our guide then we won't know till the summer. That's what went down with Shea Patterson and those Ole Miss transfers
I was actually pleasantly surprised when both Trevon Grimes and Van Jefferson were cleared to play for Florida this season.... and they both contributed sigificantly to the ten win season.
Nick Starkel announced he'll graduate after this semester and look to find a place to play. Hope the kid does well. He's been a good teammate his entire time at A&M.
I just read that 11 of 19 five star QB's since 2010 have transferred schools. Wow! Can that be right? Staying put is kaput: College QBs on the move (and OSU can't complain)
I think most of those 5 star QB's think they should be playing as freshmen, maybe be ok with a redshirt year but definitely be the starter in year 2 and a 1st round pick after their 3rd year. Irish in a ticklish situation with this, 2018 starter Ian Book had an excellent year and will be the starter going into Spring Drills. We have a QB behind him, Phil Jurkovec, who was one of the top QB's in the 2018 class and did sit this year, but will he be willing to sit next year, and then what happens if Book has another good year and comes back for 2020? Will Jurkovec be willing to sit behind him for 3 years before he takes over???
Scott, apparently he has an interest in OSU. He would be an ideal addition here, in case Justin Fields does not get a waiver to play this fall. He has more experience than our current backup QB'S.
Another QB is leaving, entering the Portal. Josh Jackson who started at Va.Tech in 2017, and was the 2018 starter till he broke his leg and missed the season. When the Irish played them they had Ryan Willis as the Starter and he was a Jr. They also had a freshman named Hooker. So he must not feel like he's going to get the call in the Spring that they are going with maybe the freshman Hooker. I don't know. But bottom line is another QB on the market, he'll be a grad transfer.
Don, You could definitely do worse. He has a lot of arm talent, and is very intelligent. He just doesn't have as much mobility as Mond, and so didn't get the nod for us.
With ND's situation, remember that for as good of a season book had, Wimbush started and played in 4 games.
How about this, Bru McCoy a 5 star WR who chose USC over Texas and has already enrolled at USC is reportedly having second thoughts and will be entering his name in the Transfer Portal. It's expected he will transfer to Texas. That has to be some kind of record for a guy quitting and transfering, 1 week on campus.
USC is a clanish private school with small cliques and legacies all over the place. Not many people automatically fit in there. Furthermore, their current coach has lost a huge number of his recruits in recent years...
It's just that it's 1 week, and his HS QB was J.T. Daniels and his teammate at WR was the St. Brown kid who had a great freshman year for the Trogs. Anyway USC loss is Texas gain.
rumors are that USC freshman WR Amon Ra St. Brown who was outstanding this year is bailing on them and likely to end up in Oregon. J.T. Daniels is bound to be feeling lonesome, St. Brown was his teammate at Mater Dei along with the already gone Bru McCoy who is now at Texas.
I saw this on the internet.... PSU has 16 players leaving. 6 players have declared for the draft. 10 have announced intent to transfer and/or placed their names in the portal. That's a lot of transfers.
It got worse.. Penn State has had 11 confirmed scholarship transfers in the first year of the portal. Two more players — safety Lamont Wade and offensive tackle Alex Gellerstedt — have reportedly entered the portal. Should Wade and Gellerstedt leave, which looks likely, Penn State will have lost 18 scholarship players to early departure, including those five underclassmen who declared for the 2019 NFL draft. Why Penn State football’s offseason exodus is not a cause for panic
I see that a 2nd Va Tech QB has put his name in the Portal and said his goodbyes to the Hokies. Hendon Hooker was a freshman this year. It is tough to keep QB's on campus.
