that triple deke in the shootout was just filthy. She put the best female goalie in the world on her heels with her first move, her back with her second move and beat her with the 3rd move.

Also, booo Wikipedia for taking down the article edit that listed Maggie Rooney as US Secretary of Defense. :)

Didn't make it to the hockey good for the ladies!

I did watch the last half of the cross country relay and that finish by Jesse Diggins was pure guts and determination

I see Shiffrin got a silver and Lindsay Vonn didn't finish. Shiffrin started the Olympics going for 5 golds, got 1 gold and a Silver. Vonn a Bronze. Not bad but less than hoped for both of them.

I see Rooney is only 20 so much for needing experience! I also see she is a student at UMD up on the Iron Range!

The women's coach, Robb Stauber, is a Duluthian and a former goaltender in the NHL. His nickname when he was with the Kings was 'Blueline' because he wouldn't keep his ass in the net and would wander all over the defensive zone to play the puck. There was a time that the Kings had defensive players like Larry Robinson, Rob Blake, Paul Coffey etc... and there you had GD Stauber roaming around demanding to play the puck and push it up ice.

Still, he knows goaltending. When he selected 3 rookie goalies for the team, I was 100% fine with it because that's the 1 thing I was sure he knew.

BTW, another criticism that Stauber faced was that he replaced about half the roster that lost to Canada in the previous Olympics with new faces. In women's sports like hockey and soccer, it's common for these women to play well past their prime traditionally. Stauber, when he made the move from assistant to head coach, whacked a bunch of people. The team was still filled with veterans but he had a lot of new, young blood on the team as well.

The guy's won something like 4 straight world championships and Olympic Gold now, so it's pretty hard to say he's wrong.

The Canadians got a double dose yesterday as USA's mens curling team (aka Team Duluth) upset the heavily favored Kanuks and will play Sweeden for the gold.

Curling actually is popular every 4 years. Most average joes like me can identify with the guys. :)

This was a landmark upset. Canada has won Gold in the past 3 Olympics and Silver in the two prior games. Our guys were inspired by the Women's hockey win.

    Nice article:

Oy Canada! Germany which won 0 games in the 06 and 10 Olympics and failed to qualify for the 14 Olympics beat Canada 4-3 in the mens semi finals. They will play Russia for the gold medal.

I believe this is their first win over Canada in Olympic hockey in 86 years.

Both Hockey teams lose, their Curling team loses...yet they will garner the most medals ever for a Canadian team in the Winter Olympics...go figure.

Insane gold medal game. Germany led 3-2 and a penalty was called on the Russians with a little more than 2 minutes to play. The Russians pull their goaltender and score with 45 left to play.

Game will now go to OT.

Russia wins in OT on a power play goal.

Germans had this game won in the 3rd period and squandered away the gold with sloppy play on their power play. But, they made an incredible run during these games and did win the silver.

From what I read the Russians had the best roster, they didn't have their active NHL players but they had a lot of veteran players who had played in the NHL.

I see they and their fans gave the IOC the finger and sang the banned Russian Nat'l Anthem over the Olympic anthem that was being played for the OAR. :?

You didn't expect the Russians to follow the rules, did you?

Maybe I should have posted this in the 'Our Friends The Animals' in the other forum but I never knew the snowboarding competition in the Olympics also included a running squirrel obstacle!

I saw the squirrel episode. Pretty smooth moves by both parties to avoid disaster.
