Tonight Carmen's Crew defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles 66-60 to win the TBT in Chicago and a 2 Million check in the process. Carmen's Crew was made of of a number of Ohio State players like Aaron Craft, William Buford, David Lighty, Jon Dibbler, and coached by Sullinger. Marquette alumni put up quite a battle. Excellent game to watch.
It took me awhile for me to warm up to the TBT, but once I got hooked last year, I followed it very closely this year. Each player on the squad ended up with $120,000.00, not a bad payday.
Ohio State had their first scrimmage yesterday and Coach Day was not happy with the offense! He praised the defense, but pointed out that the offense was very sloppy. Maybe a little psychology going on here?
Actually it has always been the official name of the university, originally it was known as Morrill Act of 1862 under the name of Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The emphasis on "The" may have originated under the presidency of Edward Jennings (who fired Earl Bruce). This is not based on fact but President Jennings saved the university by his personal fund raising activities. Ohio State was deeply in debt and struggling financially. Somehow that involved the "The" emphasis on the in university. This is my own recollection and not the official version.
Much ado about nothing. People are selling non-licensed stuff with "THE" on it associating it with the University. The University wants to protect it's market. Tell me which college, university, or sports organization hasn't tried to trademark it's merchandise and prevent knockoff sales. What is dumber...doing that or writing a snarky article implying that the university is trying to trademark all use of the word "the". "Ohio State has filed an application to trademark the word “the,” which just happens to be the most commonly used word in the English language. What’s next? Charging campus guests for the air they breathe? Imposing a sunshine tax for games at The Horseshoe? Asking anyone with a buckeye tree in their yard for royalties?" Actually we looked into a sunshine tax for games at The Horseshoe...but it was determined that it wouldn't be successful...you know...Big 10 weather and all.
Just an aside, but when I was a student at Texas in the 60's it was pretty common to put The University on the window of your car, instead of The University of Texas, of course some just put Texas. But I had a sticker that said "The University".
Just a few days away from opening game with Florida Atlantic in the Shoe! I am somewhat confused with the attitude of some sports analysts suggesting Justin Fields will be a bust in his first game as a starter. I realize he is under a great deal of pressure, but sometimes the media gets carried away with their ranting.
The good thing is that the kid will be playing his first game in a friendly environment, with a very talented team and against an overmatched opponent. He should get off to a fine start, but it will be a tough year for him if everybody expects him to have a better QB season by the numbers from Dwayne Haskins. All he has to do is win.
Kind of a little bit of a thread drift, but Herbie has his preseason awards, they aren't an all-american team but rather a few off beat categories. Like best student section, best gameday food, best band. In the best band Ohio State was in it, but also Ohio University. I don't know what the Ohio University band does but they must do something pretty well. Best bands Ohio State Southern Wisconsin Michigan Ohio University
Just watched some of the YouTube clips on Southern. They do put on quite a show Corey. Comparing Southern and Ohio State Band is like comparing apples and grapefruit. I do see your point though.
