A lot of top 25 teams lost this weekend. As I type this St. Johns is hammering Duke, a big upset. Duke #3 and St. Johns below .500 in the Big East.
Duke appeared to be almost unbeatable early on. Things sure can change in a hurry in college basketball. Really makes things interesting. Our days without losing have to be numbered. Almost impossible to have a perfect season anymore.
Yeah you guys have some road tests comming up at Minn, Purdue, and Wisc...not to mention always dangerous MSU at home. None of those teams are "great" teams but they are good enough to beat you if you have an off night, and it's not easy to be "on" every time out.
Hope you guys have your cardiologist on speed dial...looks like your Buckeyes are going to keep you on the edge of your seats the rest of the way!! Nice win!
Terry, Thanks! I have to admit they have caused me some duress in ths last couple of games in particular. We were a bit sluggish in the first half, but came out strong in the second half with a 12-1 run and it was all over. Sullinger and Craft continue to play like veterans.
The kids didn't play well in the first half....9 turnovers when we average 10 for a whole game. I did notice some things that are cause for concern going forward - it appears Lighty is losing confidence in his jumper and he had been shooting well. I hope he finds his stroke as that would be a big loss times 2, in effect taking away a perimeter threat and adding a post defender on Sully.....which brings up another thing....the amount of mugging that the young man is being subject to has reached a ridiculous level the conference officials need to put their heads together and call the game the same way on both ends. Depending on who you believe he is somewhere between 260 and 280 pounds and by most accounts very, very athletic for such a big man, quite capable of standing solidly on his own rather large two feet.....he ended up on the deck under the basket at least 6 times last night, the majority of those times there was no foul called.....how does that happen? I thought Matta was going to have a stroke last night....if they let that continue, with the present trend, they will allow knives and blackjacks in the paint during the conference tourney.
In the category of useless trivia, here's a good one for Buckeye fans.... It would seem as if Matta and staff are doing a pretty good job....on the recruiting trail, in the film room, locker room and on the bench. Losing the NPOY, being fortunate (or good) enough to have great young players coming in but you still have to have the chops to put a team on the court playing a style that best suits their talents and this is a very different team than last years version.... It's almost like losing an option QB in Turner and then signing a stud pro-style QB in Sully and a great wideout in Craft, retooling to a pro-style offense and not missing a beat....not the same magnitude of difficulty to be sure, but no easy task nonetheless.....great job.
Buckeye Terry, Going back in time to that 27-0 record of undefeated games by Lucas and Co. The streak ended of all places up in Madison against the Badgers if I recall correctly? My the years have really passed quickly for me.
I remember that team believe it or not....my Dad was broadcasting the games on radio during that era up till the 1968 season and I distinctly remember listening to them and if it was a road game, getting up in the middle of the night to go get him at the airport after the team flight got in.....fond memories after that group as well, with Coach Taylor, Gary Bradds, Hosket, Sorenson, etc
Yep, sure was....did color for WBNS (same Columbus station that Jeffers worked at) on the radio broadcasts of both football and basketball and several summers did the games of the AAA minor league baseball team the Columbus Jets back in the day....last Buckeye game was the infamous 1969 loss to the Stripeheads in AA 24-12....if you listen closely to the broadcast, you can hear him pounding on the table in the press box.
Wow that must have been neat growing up with your dad having that job. Bet you got to meet all sorts of legends as a kid.
It was a good gig for a little guy.....far and away my favorite was the press box at Jet Stadium - the minor league ballpark. I din't get there as often as I would have liked, but when I did, I got all the foul balls hit on the roof!
The meatgrinder of the schedule is upon us....the gauntlet begins tomorrw in Minny, then at Wisky, Sparty at home and then the Boilers in Mackey......I just can't see anybody getting through that unscathed....good prep for tourney time tho.
I will be surprised if we lose tomorrow in that the Gophers are without their point guard. Hofbarger moving out front really limits some of his scoring capabilities. Much more worried about the Whisky game in Madison! Hopefully this does not curse the Buckeyes tomorrow!
Buckeye T, I played pickup basketball with Bill Hosket and his best friend, Donnie May. We all grew up in the same neighborhood. I was several years younger but they needed to round out a team.
That was quite a playground team.....I remember them both. May went to UD didn't he? Helluva player... Don, I hear you but as we saw with NW, life on the road is tough, even without one of your key players! I expect Tubby to have his Gophers ready to go and expect them all to step up their game just that much.....we'll have to play well to come out on top......hope to see Lighty get his jumper back
