Well my point is that Kelly inspires both emotions. I want to really like Kelly, but it would be a lot easier if he had say stayed around and met with the kid and his parents before getting on the jet to Phoenix. Like I said I'll bet Urban and Nick would have handled it differently. But a lot of people now saying Kelly doesn't like recruiting, and that is one of the reasons people speculate he's interested in the NFL. On the other hand many say that Urban lives for recruiting. I certainly don't know if Farrar will be any good, or even sign with us on NSD...but I sure would feel better if Kelly took the same interest in the least touted recruit in the class as he does in the highest touted. He doesn't know which kid is going to end up being a key cog in the offerense or defense at this point. So why not work hard at getting all of them.
".....a lot of people....." "......many say....." Can't you guys think for yourself? You rely on "a lot of people" and "many say" for your opinions? I am so tired of seeing the NDN group mindset bleed over onto this forum. Check your blood pressure before you explode. Geesh! I guess I'm too old school for today's internet junkies. I just don't fit in with the group-think mentality.
So let's get this straight, some kid has to choose his college between Stanford and ND. His decision is going to be based on his 15 minute meeting with the ND head coach? Doc, you'be been reading too many posts on other boards. How do I know? I read "a lot of people are saying" and "people speculate" and I know that you're spending too much time on boards with folks that are warped and delusional. Do the folks who know so much about Urban know why he had a complete mental meltdown while at Fla.? He had so much fun recruiting in the hotbed of college talent that he "retired." I really think that the "recruitnicks" care more about NSD than they do about gameday. They're nuts.
Hey...wait a minute! I'm delusional and the only board I read is this one! Is it pitchers and catchers yet?
Well most of what I comment on as "other people" is not from NDN, it's from Irish Sports Daily and Mike Frank and Coach D, or Irish Illustrated and Tim Priester and Pete Sampson. But my comments on Kelly inspiring a split in the fanbase is from observing a lot of posts on NDN where you are either a Kellylover or not. But when I say I wish that Kelly had done this weekend differently and chosen to finish off recruiting by staying in South Bend to meet with his last shot at getting a safety in this class that's just my opinion.
This is the only BB I speak out on regarding Notre Dame football. I quit Blue And Gold Illustrated because of the moronic and mean spirited Irish fans that post there. And BGI is by far the most civil, believe it or not. But that does not preclude me from voicing my opinion here or anywhere else. It's worth as much or as little as anybody else's. Yes, I am not a big Brian Kelly fan. Never have been and never will be. In this instance, I think it is a mistake to spend the final recruiting weekend off the clock. And yes, kissing these kids asses is EXACTLY the name of the game. I don't like it and I would not do it but "im not geeting paid $4 million to be a HC like Kelly is.
Here's what we need, a safety. Here's what we don't need, a guy who can't play for us or sits for 4 years. I know I've said this before but the kid at Florence HS is one of the worst kept secrets in the deep south, and he about crapped his pants when ND offered him. He's been a solid for Louisville for a while now. Still, when he got the offer, it caused Petrino to stop banging hookers and riding Harleys long enough to race down here to make sure the kid was not going anywhere. We came in super late and the guy recruiting him was Uncle Rico. It bothered me then that the DB coach was not the one recruiting him. Maybe Cooks has been job shopping and Kelly knew this? One of Auburn's top OL recruits this year is a kid no one knew about initially until he attended the Notre Dame football camp a few years ago. After his showing at the camp, he got the attention and was gone. I don't ever even remember hearing about ND recruiting Tyler Carr. He came to us to get seen! BTW, to show you how little the 'experts' know, how in the world does one not know about a 6'6" 300+lb OL? I saw that kid play against Decatur in the 2nd round of the playoffs and he was a mountain of a human being. Decatur, defensively, is almost always insanely fast and physical. That kid held up just fine and was the only reason they could move the ball at all. Point being, I don't think whoever is charged with recruiting in the South is doing a good job. Your coordinators are supposed to be a closer, like the HC. Some of these guys are there for the taking, but we always seem to come in late. I'm sure the NDNation crowd would argue pedigree but the kid was down to Louisville and Miami (Fl). Still, I'd rather take the doughnut on the year rather than spend a lot of time chasing a guy who may not work out.
I guess if you've just had an assistant leave that might be a good place to look for a replacement. Then again spending your time on a possible 3 star D back is much more important that finding a good D back coach. And while we're at it, is it true that Kelly met with the kid and his family a week or so ago?
Tom Loy on Kellygate. I can't imagine why NBC would want Kelly at the Super Bowl, or why he was contractually bound to be there to tell you the truth. I never saw Kelly on any telecast pregame or postgame and I don't remember him even being quoted by anybody, it's almost like he wasn't there.
Yeah I think most of the networking for new coaches takes place at the Coaches convention not at the Super Bowl. My guess is that there weren't very many coaches looking for jobs at that game. Way too expensive unless somebody is paying your tab.
There are so many social events that happen the week of the Super Bowl. (My daughter Meg was working her 8th SB this past week.) NBC probably had a dinner with some of their big sponsors including those that back the ND games on NBC. This was their year to televise the game and I'm sure that they went all out to impress sponsors. So who better to be a guest at their dinner than Kelly? Then again, if we didn't see him on TV there was no reason for him to be there.
Well no doubt he was there, no doubt he was a guest of NBC. If they paid his way (and his wifes) way there, there must have been some quid pro quo. But what is done is done, maybe Farrar or some other safety will commit on Wed or maybe not. Maybe nothing Kelly could have done would have changed things, we'll never know. But Corey is right, what we don't need is a guy taking up a scholarship who is never going to contribute, sort of like George Atkinson's brother who wasn't really ever a good special teamer...but got the same free ride as his brother.
He was there to schmooze with NBC's sponsors. Of course, he was contractually obligated. Who do you think pays for the telecast of ND games? The at-home viewers? The reason why ND makes millions from its contract with NBC is that sponsors put up the money for expensive commercials. That's how all the conferences make money from their TV networks. That's how money is provided to bowl teams. If I'm the head of a large company committing to millions of dollars of sponsorship going into ND's coffers, I want to be darn sure I get to shake hands with the head football coach. If I'm the NBC exec negotiating the contract with ND, I'm going to make darn sure the head coach is contractually obligated to be present at my social functions on SB weekend to meet my sponsors. When another network broadcasts the SB, it's not an issue. This year it is. Why do we have to explain this? It's econ 101 To question his presence at the Super Bowl is at best naive.
I imagine we cable subscribers might pay for the broadcast of Irish football as well. Just a hunch. I'm sure recruiting will finish strong.
Would your feeling change if Kelly didn't bother to stay to meet with the player and his parents if say the player was a highly recruited 5 star top 10 national player at a position of need for the Irish?
Terry, with due respect, I can't believe you asked the question. Do you really think that the head coach of Notre Dame would leave town to fulfill a contractual obligation without doing everything possible to seal the deal with a potential signee, regardless of whether he's rated 3, 4, or 5 stars? Perhaps you do, but I don't. That's my answer.
Yes I do believe that Sid, I believe that he told the player and his parents he wouldn't be there but some of his underlings would be there to show him around. I doubt if Kelly even gave it a second thought, in his mind he'd done enough I'm sure. I want to like Kelly and for the most part I do like Kelly. But sometimes he does and say's stuff that just makes me wonder.
