Sad news about Jim Seymour. He was a classmate and from this area. I know some of his family. We played on the same team at one time. It was vollyball. Not the time to tell the story.

Irish Ladies take down DePaul tonight, I watched most of the 2nd half, very tough hard fought game from both teams. I thought we were headed to OT when an Irish player forced a mistake on the DePaul player bring the ball up court with under a minute to play...that sealed the game for ND 71-67.

I know a number of ladies programs have good attendance, Tenn and UConn pretty much sellout their home games. ND has good numbers as well, and there are other teams doing well also. But these conference tournaments are pretty much family and friends. The game tonight could have had more than a thousand people, in a big areana. I saw the crowd at the A10 championship tonight between Xavier and Dayton..nobody there for the most part.

It's this attendance problem that keeps the first and second round games not being played at a neutral site, instead at campus sites which can give unfair advantages to teams.

Irish announce that they will no longer use those lifts to film football practices. Instead remote control camera's will be installed. Actually makes a lot of sense, even if there had never been a tragedy.

New Film system for football practice

I would guess that besides the obvious safety gain, that cost of a pole mounted camera vs one of those lifts and the maintence that goes with them will save the University money.

ND found guilty by Indiana Dept of Labor. Fined 77K in the death of Declan Sullivan.

I have to assume this was not unexpected, the size of the fine is certainly no big deal. But more importantly ND and the Sullivan family seem to be on the same page. ND is going to honor Declan in some way, speculation is that there will be some sort of scholarship given annually in his honor. And I think gipper suggested that it's unlikely that Declans brother or sister will pay any tuition going forward at ND. Might even be some sort of monetary settlement between the Univ and and Sullivans that we'll never know about.

I wonder if he is being considered an employee since the Dept. of Labor is involved. If so, they might not be able to sue since their sole remedy would be Workman's Comp.

That's what I am seeing and that the cap on monetary damages is low enough that it wouldn't be worth the time/effort to sue ND. But more importantly I get the feeling that the Sullivans seem to be in a frame of mind to handle things quietly in the background as opposed to making a big splashy attempt to vilify ND. In this case ND seems to have done all the right things with regards to the Sullivans after the accident.

No good news this weekend. Irish Hockey 0-2 in the CCHA tourney, and Irish Basketball run out of the building by FSU....then Michael Floyd is arrested for drunk driving on the ND campus. He will no doubt be suspended for Spring Drills and I could see him being punished into the fall with missing some games. It's not his first alcohol related offense, he was arrested in last Jan in a fight at a frat party in Minn and charged with MIP.

Cut him. That's enough drama. Kelly just made him a captain and that's his way of saying thanks. Point him to the NFL.

Well Rashon Powers-Neal never saw the field again for ND after his DUI in his senior year. I suspect that Floyd will at the very least be suspended for the rest of the semester and don't be shocked if he is suspended for all or part of his Sr year on the field. Supplemental draft might come into play at this point.

    The latest on Floyd:

    From BGI:

Based on what I was told by a source close to the situation, wide receiver Michael Floyd nearly hit another vehicle while driving under the influence. The driver in the other car is the one that phoned the police. The cops caught up with the star player nearly two blocks from where he resides and he was taken into custody after showing signs of impairment.

When given a breathalyzer test ... I was told Floyd blew a .19, which is just over twice the legal limit in the state of Indiana (.08 ).

The Indiana state police is in the final stages of a "Operation Pull-Over Blitz" that began nearly a month ago, so there has been an increased amount of cars being pulled over for any signs of driving impairment, not wearing seat belts, speeding, etc. in the area.

    The Official NDStatement:

Notre Dame spokesperson Dennis Brown just released this statement:

"The University is aware of this incident and is confident that local law enforcement agencies will handle it in a prompt, thorough and professional manner. As for internal discipline, while we do not publicly discuss specific cases, it is well known that Notre Dame has high standards for student conduct, takes these matters seriously, follows the facts where they lead, and when necessary, institutes appropriate sanctions at the appropriate time."

    From :inside the lockeroom:

Just got off the phone with an inside ND source and yes they are going crazy right now on MF and the hammer will come down and not lightly because he is a repeat offender and stupid as they come to allow himself to be I this position…. His mother is going to kill him first if Kelly doesn’t.

Next man in....I didn't think he would be back in the first place now it's likely he'll be expelled.

Somebody on another board posted this from the ND Handbook known as DuLac.

I believe this is his first DUI. Last year he had a MIP when home in Minn.

I guess the question is will Res Life look at this as his "1st" offense or count his MIP as his "1st" offense. If they count the MIP, then he'll be expelled most likely.

Here's my question, why does Res Life get involved in matters that occurred while the student was home on break? Like a lawyer I look at it as a matter of jurisdiction. When he's a student at school, they should be involved. When he's at home let mom and dad handle it.

Well a good question. But as a ND grad and father of several ND grads I'm sure you are familar with duLac the ND bible of student affairs, probably have a dog eared copy at home!

But for the rest of us...here's the key language from page 104/105 of the online duLac manual.

It would be quite a reach to relate an incident at home in Minn. when school was out to this section.

BTW I've never seen du Lac. I'm also sure that I violated much if not all of it's provisions during my 4 yrs. at ND. (Actually, I think that it was published after I graduated.)

Everyone here is aware of my stance on Alcohol, or any other intoxicants for that matter.

I couldn't care less if the guy is a student, student athlete, faculty member, or Joe Schmoe, or Jose Schmozalez. I don't care if he/she is from my school or your school. If you get behind the wheel after consuming any substance to the point of being impaired, that is a character issue and should be considered to be a felonious activity. You are putting the lives of innocent people in your impaired hands. For that, you should be taken off the streets and spend jail time. I'm not talking 24 or 48 hours. That should be a mandatory one month lock-up on the first offense.

Now, what the school does with him/her, could be more lenient. After serving the mandatory sentence, the school should then decide what is right for their program. If it was my decision, expulsion would be in line with the crime.
