On Michael Vinson, I heard someone say they didn't know who he was and that was a good thing cause he's been our long snapper for a while now and we have had no problems there.
Shayne Simon has entered the Portal, not a big surprise. He had some moments at LB, but not enough and I doubt he would have been a big part of the LB Corp in 2022. Good luck to him.
LB along with OL are our strengths in this recruiting class. We're better off with another scholie than someone buried on the depth chart.
I wonder what percentage of this recently signed class will vamoose sometime in the next three years?
Certainly the 1 x transfer with immediate eligibility rule will impact transfer rate all across college football. I read an article on the Athletic that said that coaches are starting to think that they would rather recruit QB's out of the portal because HS QB's can come stay a year and then transfer while the portal QB's use up that 1x transfer and if they leave again they have to sit a year. So it sort of stabilizes the QB room if your backup is a transfer.
A preferred walk - on LB! Notre Dame added another piece to its 2022 class on Saturday as Benedictine College Preparatory (Va.) linebacker Kobi Onyiuke committed to the Fighting Irish as a preferred walk-on. The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder camped at Notre Dame over the summer and holds an impressive 4.7 GPA.
Solid win today by the Irish women over Pitt, 85-59. Freshman Sonia Citron, PG, led the way with 21 points. As I have said before this team has a lot of potential.
I noticed recently that UConn women are ranked "all the way down" at #7. Apparently, their big gun is injured. Missing a star player wasn't a problem for them in the past. They just filled the void with another star player. I'd say that Gino may be losing his edge, but I still wouldn't bet against him.
2020 didn't count against anybody's eligibility which is why Kurt Hinish was able to come back and play his 6th year and why some players like Bo Bauer are eligible to come back next year. It's why Avery Davis can comeback next year if he wants. But that's different than the 85 player limit. I remember reading that the NCAA was going to allow expansion of the rosters by up to 7 players (I think) to account for the covid extension of eligibility. But I don't know if it's actually been made official. In general though we typically find ourselves (and so do most teams) over the limit this time of the year. Then through transfers, players not coming back for 5th years, etc we get down to the 85 player limit by the time August rolls around. Not sure though that we've ever been 10-11 players over the limit.
The article I read suggests will be a lot of difficult decisions by Freemen and even more difficult conversations with players. Some guys who started this year and want to stay may not be invited back.
Given the situation in the WR room we need Davis back. Lugg is one of those guys who apparently wants to come back, but he really wasn't all that great last season and I think I'd rather see Alt or Fisher at LT and the one who isn't starting at LT move over and start at RT. Could do without Lugg.
Not only is Bueckers out but super freshman Azzi Fudd is also out. While they are a deep team that has recruited very well, those were big losses. They feel out of the top 10 for the first time since 2005, a string of 313 weeks in a row. Next closest is Tenn during Pat's great run, but they were 100 + weeks behind. Has Geno stayed too long? After winning 4 in a row in the Breanna Stewart era, they haven't won since 2016.. But they have made 13 straight final 4's. So probably not they are still one of the best programs year after year.
Men's basketball is playing W. Michigan tonight. Great 1st half 44-23. But W. Michigan is not a very good MAC team so keep that in mind. Still good to see them play well, hope they finish the game off strong
