You probably remember the quick kick as well, I saw a Texas QB do it one time when I was in school...surprised the hell out of the other team and it went for 60 or 70 yards. Nobody would consider quick kicking today.
yes the quick kick was a big part of every college team...and so was the STATUE OF LIBERTY play. BTW Tom Brady a few years ago placed a beautiful quickkick. Who was last Pro (or college) player to use the DROP KICK?
That's an easy one, you can see that guy on the Notre Dame broadcasts on NBC....Doug Flutie! Do you have a box of Flutie Flakes in your pantry?
Flutie working for Notre Dame..thats funny! and yes 10 years ago Flutie drop kicked an extra point in his last game with Patriots ( maybe it was 15 years ago)
Sloppy win, but a win. They kept making a big deal out of Golson coming close to the FCS record for consecutive completions in a game, and while if there is a record for that I wish he'd have got it. But it is sort of bogus because so many of those passes were just swing passes, still passes but sort of not real passes as well. Anyway statwise he had a very good game, but it was ugly good. Everybody is disappointed with the OL at this point. I give Syracuse credit for playing defense with a lot of energy, but they looked like Purdue which also played with a lot of passion and about the same result. Stopped the rush but couldn't cover our receivers. Fuller is awesom, Corey Robinson is awesome, the rest of the guys are good...welcome to ND football Tori Hunter Jr! Nice catch. G'night.
 Sloppy win on the road with five turnovers. Everybody looked beatable today, including the Irish. I'll take it, but if we look like that next week, we'll get whipped... 1. Will Fuller has become the greatest deep threat in college football. Just having him out there forces the other team to put a free safety over the top of the defense. Any team that doesn't runs the risk of Fuller burning them deep. He can run right past single coverage by the CBs. 2. The OL was a disaster today. There was confusion and mix-ups with assignments all game long. 3. Torii Hunter looked fantastic! Wow! He looks like a much more dangerous weapon than CJ Prosise and he was "only 80%" recovered? I can't wait to see him at full speed! 4. Cam McDaniel is still our best TB. 5. Corey Robinson is really throwing his weight around out there as a possession receiver. 6. Joe Schmidt is a special player. He's always around the ball hitting someone. 7. Our safeties were outstanding today, as usual, and playing under control... 8. That Syracuse coach sure is an obnoxious twit...isn't he? 9. I love that Trumbetti. It's hard to believe that he's only a freshman... 10. The Irish play 17-19 freshmen in every game. They're so good, that they make fewer mistakes, as a group, than the older players...
My seat was up high but exactly on the 50 yard line so I got a good look at everything and everybody. It was a Syracuse home game and they had a lot of fans there. Golson's average completion was 9.3 yards but three feet would have been more accurate because he threw swing passes all night and the athletic receivers and RBs turned them into more. This is a big difference with this team, all the RBs can catch the ball. Will Fuller has blazing speed. Watch out for Torii Hunter, Jr. Has some real moves out there. The OL is not getting the push I was expecting this year. But we hardly ever run a quick hitters; everything is counters and delays. Pass blocking is pretty solid. Ben Koyack is not as good as his predecessors at TE. Average blocker, not quick . Golson had at least three of the TOs, maybe four. My seat was directly across from Kelly and I was thinking he probably was as purple as Oscar the Grouch at times. Turnovers are the great equalizer because ND was at least 30 points better than Cuse. DL looks great. Lots of rotation in and out. At times we played two true Freshmen at DE at the same time, Trumbetti and Blankenship. Trumbetti could be an AA before he leaves town; he is that good. So is Jarron Jones. And Sheldon Day is better than all of them. Tons of depth. LBs are pretty damn good. Jaylon Smith is a beast and a certain AA if he stays healthy. but Joe Schmidt is the story back there. He is one hell of a tough LB. Safeties are very good. CBs a little suspect. Cole Luke (#36) got torched repeatedly on the same play down the left sidelines. He has the traditional Irish CB disease... he loses the ball... turns his back completely on the QB. One big difference with this group though... they are sure tacklers as a group. Special teams are 100% improved. Make that 150%. I love the new DC , Brian Van Gorder. He looks like a psychopath but works harder on the sidelines than the players on the field. He must lose ten pounds per game. He is into it and is always praising, hugging and back slapping the kids. And you can tell they feel that way about him. BVG views every single point allowed as a personal insult. These are all traits that Diaco did not have. Unsung hero on the Defense? My vote goes to Romeo Okwara. Plays nasty and hits hard. It was an ugly win due to the five turnovers but they overcame and still won comfortably. This team is fun.
Lol...if Joel wasn't taking shots at the ND schedule, I'd wonder if he had some sort of medical event that affected his mind! I like this team but we do have our warts and whether or not our schedule is one of the tougher ones or not, we will have to be very fortunate to go undefeated. I was thinking 9 or 10 wins would be a good season for the team with all the question marks and new young players we had going into the season. I think we can beat all the remaining teams on the schedule but I don't think we will. Stanford, USC and FSU are all very strong teams and I doubt we can beat them all. Hey Joel, did you watch Yale beat Army? Great game and the first Ivy League win over a FBS team in 20 years. Oh yeah Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick has the Texans at 3-1.
Joel what do you think of a major team playing UCF, Akron, UMass and Temple for their non-conference schedule? Is that a tough schedule?
I agree with George, this team is fun. If we lose a game, I wonder how many of our safeties will get ejected in the closing minutes? They really don't seem to like people and I'm fine with that. People need to understand that we were hit with some very key suspensions right before the start of the season. Therefore, despite all of our big expectations, we were kinda screwed right out of the gate. Every 'expert' had us losing 4 or 5 games, and Herbie was still talking about that **** last night. BTW, a Buckeye poking a stick into the eyes of Irish fans for their 'high expectations' can kiss my ass. Anywho, we can discuss Herbie's ******** at another time... This team is fun. To an extent, we are playing with house money and we're doing it with an insanely young team. Herbie made several half-assed attempts at it, but he seemed to struggle quantifying it. I really enjoy BVG's defense, but then again, I've long been a fan of psychopaths.
Terry, I cut off your statement there because that part of your comment agrees with my belief that we are capable of beating every team on our schedule. I didn't include the second part of your comment because it's too pragmatically negative. By the way, just 4-5 games into the season, what I've seen from the 3 most challenging teams on our schedule confirms my belief re: our capabilities. It doesn't mean it will happen, but you have to admit it's not out of the question. Corey, LOL! It's only Sunday, and already we have the quote of the week.
