Didn't this team lose to Cal-Poly last week> http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/recap?gid=200808300093 Man...you have to think Charlie's seat on the bench is getting hotter by the minute.
Hey, I know it is not style points quite what the Irish fans wanted. But a win is a win is a win and the last two drives may have been very significant for the Notre Dame team this year. Congrats on a nice come from behind win.
Don't mean anything by it Tom. If SD St doesn't fumble that ball an inch before it breaks the plane of the goal line you can bet more than a few Irish fans here would be saying the same thing. Heck..they might anyway. I'm sure all teams will struggle at times this season including my Gators but Weis is on a leash that is getting shorter if they had lost to SD St.
We lost the turn over battle, fumbled inside the 5, missed two fg attempts and I bet that there is at least one irritant out there that will point to the SDSU fumble at the 1 as the only important play of the game. Oh wait, there is!
That fumble on the goal line made up for the Robert Hughes non-fumble inside the five, his knee was down and the replay ref blew it. But that said it was a shaky start for the Irish, the defense inspite of blitzing almost every down only got 1 sack, maybe a few hurries. But in general the blitz wasn't very effective. And I was disappointed in our running game, our OL vs their banged up DL should have been a big win for the Irish and we should have run for 200+ yards. Clausen though had a great game, those TD throws he made were great throws. The 2 picks he made were not on him, on the 1st one Kamara didn't turn around and jump for the ball he was horrible, and on the 2nd one he showed hands of stone. Neither int was on Clausen. So the bright spots were Clausen, Golden Tate, Michael Floyd, David Grimes. I'm glad for the win of course and eager to see Michigan come to ND Stadium and see if we can get another win, ugly or pretty.
Terry Let me add that Armando Allen really has shown great improvement from last year. I was disappointed with his fumble, not so much because he didn't hold onto the ball, but because he didn't see the hit coming. But, he is much stronger on his feet this year and his punt return in the first half was a big play.
Congratulations ! Clausen is playing with a lot more confidence this year. The game could have gone either way, but the fumble by the Aztecs was the turning point. Question: Is the Aztec's coach the same Chuck Long that played for Iowa? Don
Anybody but me surprised that Weis didn't attempt a clinching FG at the end of the game yesterday? It was a chip shot. If we don't get the first down, SDSU has about 30 secs. to do sometyhing and it was an 8 point game.
Yeah I was sort of suprised he didn't just kick a FG at the end of the game. Our long snapper and FG kicker could have used the practice under live fire. I'm sure he just wanted to run out the clock though and not tack on a meaningless 3 points. Plus at that point if the kick was blocked, SDSU could have run it back for a score and gone for 2 and tied the game. Probably was the best thing to just maintain possession of the ball and run out the clock.
Actually I think that is the main reason Meyer went for the FG vs. Miami. Our kicker had not even attempted one in live competition and Tennessee looms in 2 weeks.
But it wasn't a meaningless three points. It would have been the clincher. I know its a long shot that SDSU would have score a TD and extra 2 in 30 secs but stranger things have happened. The Irish young talent is starting to shine through and yesterday they covered up some very suspect coaching.
