Yeah. They had to spoil it by building the dang ACC and all those other buildings over the past 68 years.
ND <t>Cool pic Terry. <br/> <br/> I bet when people saw that pic back then they thought it was really awesome.<br/> <br/> It would be nice if we could repeat that score this year.</t>
I recall being at the game at ND in 1970, after Purdue had beaten us 3 years in a row. The score was 48-0 us, and we had the ball deep in Purdue territory on 4th down. All my frustration of the past few years came forth, and I screamed for us to kick a field goal and make it 51 (points). Ara called off the dogs, and the final score was 48-0.
Good read Stu. With regard to who ended the series, I'm confused. I seem to remember the Purdue AD questioning how Purdue could continue a Home/Home series with ND when the B!G went to 9 game conference schedule. But maybe he was just rationalizing Swarbrick telling him there was going to be a break.
No clue, Terry...but I am sad to see it end. The ND-Purdue game has been a part of my life every year since I was 17 years old...and that was 45 years ago.
Because my dad was a Purdue grad (1939, Electrical Engineering), I grew up as a Purdue fan. I idolized players like Len Dawson and Lamar Lundy. I was a fan of the underdog. Hence, I hated Notre Dame, the Yankees, and the Boston Celtics. Eventually, under the subtle and loving influence of my Irish Catholic mother, I softened toward Notre Dame to the point that I applied to only two men's Catholic colleges, ND and Xavier. My point is, I have followed this rivalry since the early 1950s, first cheering for Purdue and for the past 55 years for ND. While I'm sad to see it end, I recognize that we are two programs going in two different directions, at least for now. My rationale is that now I can cheer for Purdue every game of the season. In the Oaken Bucket game, I cheer both for Purdue and IU.
ND <t>At first I thought I would be glad to see this game go but after thinking about it the past couple of days, I really don't want it to end. I don't like Purdue but it just seems natural to have them on the schedule every year. I guess I just don't like change.</t>
Oh, it was only tongue in cheek? Whew! (I know. I just thought it was imaginative and funny enough to post.)
