That brother Cardinal fan is no brother of mine!! I am a solitary Cards fan now days! I'm sending him a compliation of Nebraska victories over Texas, that'll keep him busy for a few minutes! Good though to see everybody taking sarcasm and wit as just that and nothing more! Good stuff.
ND <t>Let me be serious for a moment..if possible...<br/> <br/> A BIG part of my perceived "dislike" of Purdue has to do with past games between ND and the Boilers. Those ND fans of my age and older all probably have memories of games over the past 30-40yrs where ND went into a game with Purdue as the overwhelming favorite and seemingly on their way to a great season when BAM...they get slapped in the face by a supposed inferior team and get a big "L" in the win/loss column. Not fond memories, not at all. <br/> <br/> Again this year we see Purdue as perceived hopeless -30 underdog(per Vegas) and in no way capable of beating ND the overwhelming favorite. Make no mistake, however those Purdue players have played in the past or preceding games, they will all look like 5* players come Saturday night in Lucas Oil Stadium. At midnight, they will promptly return to form and assume their previous identities as the players they really are. They will either have again upset the Irish or made them look like a inferior team by making it a really close game. <br/> <br/> If I were Coach Kelly, I would remind this current Irish team of the past history of ND and Purdue games I have mentioned above and tell them not to pay any attention to past performances or stats related to this current Purdue squad. Rather, I would tell them to look no further ahead in this 2014 season than the Purdue game this Saturday and treat this Boilermaker team as the best team they are to play this year. <br/> <br/> ND needs to treat Purdue and they would Michigan or USC and bring that type of intensity and effort they would to those teams against them. Only then will they have a chance to beat Purdue.</t>
Tim, I'm one of those guys you mention, but I go back even 50 years. You are 100% correct in terms of how Purdue always rises to another level when they play ND. My thoughts on this year's game compared to the past revolves primarily around the Purdue QB. Ettling is all they have this year. He has not shown that he can rise to the level necessary to test our secondary. Past Purdue teams, even when average, always have had a very capable QB. A recent example was Kyle Orton, who torched us in South Bend. Why? Because WE were an average team. I am certain that the Purdue defense will try its best to stuff our run game. This year we have better balance because of Golson's ability to run. If our pass defense plays like last week, I don't see how Ettling can beat us with the pass. He's just not a high level college QB. This is the first year I can recall that I feel comfortable about our chances. It doesn't mean I'm taking them for granted. I certainly respect them. It just means that I like what I've seen in ND's first two games, and I don't like what I've seen in Purdue's first two games.
I remember my first year at ND, how excited I was for the first football game. The Irish were coming off a great year in 1964 where they lost (some say had stolen) the NC in the last half against SC. The very first game was against Purdue with Griese and two-way great Leroy Keys. The Irish were beaten. It set the tone for a disappointing year except for our beating the crap out of SC in the famous "remember" game. I also remember losing to Purdue and Mike Phipps 4 straight years. Purdue has ruined quite a few Irish seasons. And in wrapping up, I recall when Tiller took over at Purdue. The week before he played us he lost to Toledo playing a standard offense. The next week against us he played his real spread O and beat us. It was than I realized that they'd actually take a loss to an inferior opponent just to stick it to us. Tim has some good points.
Yeah there have been some heart breaking losses to Purdue. I forget what it was but Ara might have barely been .500 against Purdue. Of course that was a different time for Purdue, they were a top Big10 program at that time. Still I was at the Purdue game where I thought Kyle Orton secured his Heisman Trophy campaign with a tremendous performance against the Irish. I walked away from that game wondering how we'd ever beat Purdue again. Then who could forget the battles we had with Purdue when Tiller had Drew Brees, those games were very competitive and truthfully shocking that Drew's record vs ND wasn't better he was 1-2 as a starter. Last Purdue win was the 2007 season when everybody beat us. Truthfully the greatest ND/Purdue game in my memory other than the '66 Baby Bomber game was the 2005 game on TV. It was the game when Ron Franklin was disrespectful of Holly Rowe late in the game after another big ND play from Quinn to Jeff Samarzdja. Later Ron Franklin lost his job over another incident like that and hasn't been heard from since.
Terry, I was at the 2005 game. I don't recall the Ron Franklin/Holly Rowe thing. Was Franklin the play by play guy? What happened?
I forget what Holly said, but Franklin's reply was very condescending and he called her sweetheart. That particular exchange set the tone for a later complaint by a female collegue that cost him his job. I really liked Ron as an announcer, he got his start here in Houston. But apparently he was a sexist pig!
I'm not certain that I know all of it, but I am certainly waist deep in it. What the hell is with little girls?! They are pooping machines who wear 10 outfits a day! Boys are easier. Keep sharp things out of their hand until they are older, keep them away from all things fire or electrical until they are at least mature enough to kill only themselves when they are messing with it. Cover their crotch when changing a diaper or risk the 'park fountain.' That's it! Jesus, women are like the UN with all of these ******** rules that don't really count but you still have to follow them anyway and if they don't get their way, all they can really do is cry but it's so annoying that you gotta give them what they want just to keep the peace... Oh yeah, back on topic.. Purdue.. Good man Tim, let your hair down, we're all friends here. I'm with you on this one.
I would pay cash money to bring Franklin's ass back to the ESPN/SEC family. I would put him in a leisure suit and give him his own talk show on the SEC network..Call it 'Big Ronnie Franklin's Frank' with an hour of just brutal honesty and non-PC conversation about the southern sports world. I'm telling you, it would be like printing money. Franklin called Rowe 'sweetheart.' Now, I understand that can be condescending and sexist. I just want to know what kind of backlash he would have faced if he used the correct term 'f*cking moron.' Rowe was praising Purdue's DC (Brock Spack) for burning all 3 timeouts late in the game when they were down by 4 tds. She said some stupid sh*t like 'If the coaches are giving up, what does that say to the players' and Franklin responded along the lines of 'It's not giving up, it's (whatever the score was), sweetheart.' The beef with him in the Edwards deal, which got him fired, seemed more legit.
Purdue Game Day Traditions. Let's take a look: Breakfast Club: Purdue students dress up in costumes and hit the bars early before heading to the game. It's like Halloween seven or eight times a year. "I am an American" speech: You know you're in the heartland when the Purdue marching band announcer leads fans in reciting the "I am an American" speech before games. It started in 1966 at a time of political and social unrest as a way to inject some patriotism into games. Boiler Up chant: After a touchdown or a big play by Purdue, fans chant "Boiler Up!" as a train whistle sounds. Big bass drum: Known as the world's largest drum, the centerpiece of Purdue's band is wheeled around by four members in sliver helmets. Two drum beaters thump away during the band's performances. Boilermaker Special/X-tra special: As the official mascot for Purdue University, this old-time locomotive can be spotted around Ross-Ade Stadium on game days. The X-tra special is a smaller version that leads the football team onto the field. Block P: The All-American marching band was the first of its kind to break ranks and form a letter (P) on a football field back in 1907. The big bass drum is at the center of the block P during performances.
And all this after putting points on TX last week......I shoulda listened to Bobda..... Wacha back....Yadi back.....bats are back.....Cards Magic number is 15!!.....
BTW hasn't been mentioned but this is the last game with Purdue as well until 2020. Less drama than the situation with Michigan. I'm not sure exactly how it came about but as always money is at the root of the situation. I believe the Purdue AD said that for them they have to play 7 home games, I think, for their finances to work out and with the B1G going to 9 game conference schedule it makes traveling to ND every other year very tough for Purdue according to him. At least that's what I remember. Certainly the Irish going to 5 ACC games also had to be a factor as well.
Re: ND <r><QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> Are the Huskers on the Board?<br/> <br/> Did you put 20 on the Irish last week?</r>
