LSU seemed more than just a good team Dave last night especially given that LSU's QB had the game of his life last night. I doubt if that QB will ever throw the ball in a game better than he did last night. He hit at least five passes that would have been Bama picks had not his pass been literally a perfect pass. It will be interesting to see how many starting players from both rosters will be playing in the NFL. That game seemed to be played at a higher level in terms of speed and physicality than any other game I have seen this year. Beating a team that had not lost at home since 2009 with their starting QB playing out of his mind was a great win for Bama. I agree with your assessment that they are the clear no. 1 Being an LSU fan must be beyond maddening. Their play calling is the second half was creative and had Ala's great D on its heels the entire second half. But, with the good comes the dreck: it seems that in every major LSU I've watched, Les rolls the dice with a play call that must cause most of their fan base to want to emulate Elvis by shooting out the TV screen with a Colt 45.
ND <t>if you look at the stats in this game ND should have won by at least 3 TDs. It wasn't Pitt that played good, we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot.</t>
Re: ND <r><QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> OOOhhhhhhh....I get it.....'cause it's USC.....listen, have the faith pal, don't say 11-0, you might jinx yourself worse than saying 12-0......12-0 means the Irish <I><s></s>should<e></e></I> be playing for the NC.....focus on the finish line, not the crack in the road.</r>
All I have to say is that Cindy and I will be wearing the big green foam rubber ND hats we got at our San Antonio meeting on 24-November. there will be none that can compare to our exuberance for a ND victory that day... oh, and as a side note, Go Vols, beat Kentucky. You better!
I was at the game. I don't recall ever experiencing the range of emotions I felt last night, which I'm sure are the same as all the ND fans who watched the game in person or on TV. Corey, I've never held your opinion of Rees against you. The concern I expressed was with things I read where people got personal, not your assessment, which I never saw as personal. The interesting thing about seeing the game in person - other than not having access to replay - is that you have a wider vision of the field of play than the TV viewers. A couple of things stood out to me. First, I could not understand where Rees thought he was throwing the ball. It was nowhere near the receiver. Second, Golson locks in on the #1 receiver much too often and misses open receivers. I think it's already been mentioned here that Eifert was wide open in the endzone when he threw the INT. Third, when are we going to remove from the playbook the pass to the corner of the end zone? The receiver always is covered, most often by two defenders. The only receiver who has a chance because of his height is Eifert. Fourth, why are (it seems) 95% of our passes toward the sideline? Don't we have the ability to throw underneath more often and let our receivers' speed take over? Fifth, Manti owns the stadium and every one in it. He is a unique and iconic individual. I've been privileged to watch his growth over the last 4 years.
Sid I wonder if Golson's lack of height has something to do with not throwing the ball over the middle.
:!: Terry, I think so. You can't hit what you can't see. That's why he needs to know what the receivers are doing on every progression. He's supposed to be reading keys: if the free safety flows to the outside receiver, check where the TE is over the middle etc.
Maybe he needs to talk to Pat Haden about being a short QB. As a college QB inspite of being short that guy was great.
leave it to Dave to try to change the argument with his ******** spin.. Dave, LSU (anywhere) > Pitt. The issue is that Alabama looked very human. As Bobda noted, their (LSU) QB played the game of his life. At this point in time, there are 2 things to consider. 1) It's possible that the kids from LSU played the game of his life and it is what it is.... 2) Alabama hasn't played anyone worth a **** (sorry Bobda) up until this point... Before you guys go chanting the SEC SPEEEED flag on me, I'd like you to note that this is a subject that Alabama fans themselves have been discussing for weeks... There's a very real possibility that the SEC just is not that good this year. LSU has an impressive win over A&M and SCAR (for what SCAR is worth) This is also the LSU team that struggled mightily against Auburn (which may be the worst DI team) and Towson.. The Towson game was in Death Valley btw.. The SEC East is positively milquetoast and the West contains 2 of the worst teams in all of Division 1. No, you try to make this about something else. I'm letting you know from an AL perspective..they realize they may not be as good as last year. They realize they may be trading on name only..and that game against LSU (in a game LSU probably should have beaten them if not for Miles' idiocy finally catching up to him) they were outplayed in 3 of 4 quarters badly. Steve Spurrier is talking about them being able to beat NFL teams.. Stop and ask yourself why? There's something about this dog that doesn't hunt and it's a growing concern here. There's still a lot of football to be played here. It will be interesting to see how this all works out. Sid, What a wonderful experience for you and your grandson!
You know the Irish are back when "the luck of the Irish" is mentioned in every game re-cap. Other teams have spirited comebacks or they refuse to lose or they reach deep down inside. With Notre Dame it seems it is all luck.
ND <r>Huskerfan,<br/> <br/> <QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> O.K. Huskerfan. Not quite sure what you're sayin but I like your comparison of usc to a "crack in the road" LOL</r>
I'll take Promoting my League for $500 Irish Corey! BTW while the coaches poll is only 1/3 of the total, it's this time of year that coaches are probably going to vote their league mates higher when they can.
Auburn and Kentucky are particularly bad this year and probably would not win many non-con games against anyone. That said the SEC hasn't really played anyone this year except #8 Michigan early on when Bama killed them. Then you have to go back to the bowls last year when current SEC members went 7-2 vs. non-con opponents. So maybe the jury is out still this season but you really have nothing to go on until we see how Bama does in the title game and the SEC does in the bowls. My money says the SEC wins more than they lose.
College All-Stars beat the Lions in that game that used to be played every year in Soldier Field, in 1958 and they then beat the Packers in 1963. That '63 team had Dave Robinson, Lee Roy Jordan and Bobby Bell at LB and Ron Vanderkelen at QB. The '58 team that beat the Lions had Chuck Howley and Alex Karras.
Krebsie, Welcome back. Dave, You chose Kentucky and Auburn.. you left out Arkansas. Just because they beat Auburn doesn't mean they aren't awful as well. Mississippi State played a SunBelt schedule until the last 2 weeks and have managed to get their ass kicked badly those two weeks. One was Alabama, fair enough. The other was Texas A&M. Did you watch that? JFF is fantastic and the Aggies just housed them. That game could have been much worse... but Miss State is a big question mark. Either Vandy or Ole Miss is going to be bowl eligible and the other will not. There's your Mendoza line in the SEC. You keep pointing to your bowl slate but your opponents are chalk full of the dumpster fire that is ACC football, Big East, CUSA and B1G (who we ND fans take **** for playing.) I've liked what your Gators have done this season until last week's self-destruction against UGa and that mystery game against Missouri in which honestly.. Missou damn well could have beaten you in the swamp if Franklin doesn't go color blind. It's not like those were great coverage picks or Dbacks cutting in passing lanes. That were lollipops thrown over the head of everyone. You guys don't suck, but you look awfully human.... and that's the problem I have with just giving it all away on name alone.
Terry, both NFL teams were defending champions when they played. In fact 1957 was the last time one could use the words "Detroit Lions" and the words " are champions " in the same sentence. Corey, not sure if I would categorize Michigan as a **** team or a dumpster fire. M is a solid team with an excellent defense; its flaws are a lack of a quality running back, no deep threat at WR, and Denard's inability to consistently pass the ball accurately. We played the no.4 team on the nation on more than even terms on the road in SB and certainly gave the Irish a much tougher and more spirited game than Oklahoma did. I view Alabama's demolition of us as more indicative of just how good Alabama can be when firing on all cylinders. But internet pontificating is what it is. We can all get a better gauge re how good Alabama is when they play A&M this weekend. The Aggies has been flying under the radar all year but are a quality team. There may be some hype re Alabama but hype has a presence everywhere. I remember years ago when posters here were proclaiming a UCLA team of the late 90’s as the greatest offense show on Earth until they turned into a pumpkin on New Years Day when they played Wisconsin. And I recall a QB from Texas who was judged only capable of being a third string tight end in the PAC 10 running through and around an unbeatable Leviathan USC team.
Bobda good points. I agree Corey that I had visons of UF losing last Saturday.....but I think the problem was more lack of emotion than systemic although.....the UF offense had better step up it's game in three weeks or have no chance vs. FSU. With tune-up games in the weeks prior I think the Gators will be ready to give FSU all they can handle.
