In Kelly's post game interview he thought CJ would be back next week. I think he might be a little beat up having carried almost the complete rushing load this season. A week off would probably help. Adams seems to be doing a great job filling in although I didn't get to see him on pass protection much.
Can we please see Nyles Morgan at LB? Schmidt is so bad at this point that he is almost like playing a man short. He is completely lost out there.
ND <r><QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> Well it certainly did a great job today. Hopefully Kelly is right about CJ.</r>
ND <r>So we pack the Eagles Pro Stadium for Temple(who knows when Temple had a sellout before) and beat them there. Then we pack Heinz field for Pitt(last time was 2013 against....you know...ND) and beat them there. Hell, Pitt brought in Dan Marino and Tony Dorsett and they couldn't help them. ND should be getting a kickback for the funds they help raise for these cities. All it cost them was loss to the Irish. <E></E><br/> <br/> After a successful two game road trip against the previously undefeated Temple Owls and the 6-2 Pitt Panthers, the Irish head back to South Bend and wait for Wake Forest. Another ol has a high ankle sprain, CJ reportedly has a concussion and a shoulder injury. Going to be a true freshman and another true freshman manning the rb position.
ND <t>Hard to believe the number of injuries to starters this season. We should be O.K. with Adams. Can't believe a lot of schools backed off on recruiting him because of the injury he had in his Jr season. Kelly kinda took a chance on him and it paid off.</t>
Report Card OL - A Dominated TE - C Blocked well QB- A+ If there is a better one in college football at the moment, please stand up RB- A Against all odds WR- A Best collection in the country by far DL - B+ Work very hard and good tacklers LB - C Jaylon Smith is everywhere. He has to be because Schmidt is lost out there. CB : C If Russell is our NFL bound CB then Cole Luke can head straight to Canton S : B Schmidt's lack of coverage skills make these guys look worse than they are ST: Solid all year Coaching: B Live with Uncle Rico. Die with Uncle Rico. Ever see a defense bite on trick plays with more fervor than this one? Kelly continues to shine.
ND <r>Have to say it was fun listening to Mark May describe how well Kizer and Fuller played yesterday. <E></E></r>
ND <r>Little quote from Mike Frank ref Autry Denson I found interesting:<br/> <QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> Agreed <E></E></r>
ND <t>Kelly says he thinks CJ will be on the practice field this week. I think he should sit this next game out anyway. Adams should be able to handle the load.</t>
I hope CJ is 100% for the game in Fenway, I would like to see him get some rest for WF and give Adams and Williams the ball. If he's 100% for WF, I'd still like to see Adams and Williams get the ball a lot. Joe Schmidt...it's almost getting funny all the negative comments that Joe is drawing and virtually every ND board on the internet. I wish Joe were a better player, I wish Joe were faster, I don't know why BVG wants to play him so many snaps to tell you the truth. I've seen this situation before all across sports, guys playing who fans and media can not see why they are playing. I don't know why coaches do what they do, they are judged by their wins and losses if they have a player who is a really good guy and a great leader but isn't the guy who should start why would they start him they could lose their jobs. It just seems so odd that coaches sometimes just can't see what is so obvious to even a casual fan. I doubt if baring injury that Kelly or BVG is going to sit Joe Schmidt.
  Joe Schmidt calls the defensive signals. You saw what happened last year when he wasn't in there. He's a coach on the field who makes sure that everyone is in the right place when the play begins...
What JO'Co said. The coaches know what they're doing. I don't think the view of my TV screen from my armchair tells the entire story of what's happening on the field.
I think the team values the legend of Joe Schmidt over the play on the field. He is photogenic and a human interest story, no doubt. I see a guy with below average size and speed being targeted by opponents. He is constantly beat on pass coverage; he was beat two times for six against Pitt. Farley's INT saved him the first time and a dropped ball the second time. This is an inside LB making 2-3 tackles per game.
George, I believe Farley was exactly where he was supposed to be, taking over the deep route from Schmidt by design. I don't have access to the defensive playbook, but I'm guessing that zone coverage calls for Schmidt to guard the intermediate middle zone until his man leaves that zone and is taken over by a S. Think about it. What defensive scheme calls for a LB to cover deep pass routes? I don't recall the dropped pass you mentioned, but Pitt receivers dropped numerous passes. Based on what I said above, I'm guessing a DB was ready to cover the guy. Re: dropped passes, you can look at that two ways: 1) we were lucky the receivers had butterfingers, and/or 2) our pass rush hampered the QB's timing and throwing speed. C'mon George. You played the game. Do you really believe Kelly or Van Gorder is going to leave a guy on the field whose play is hurting the defense? I don't.
If Joe Schmidt is the best option at ILB then I will pray nightly for his good health. Until then, we are getting very little if anything out of that position on a weekley basis.
BTW did you guys think we got a fair call on the Farely INT at the goal line I thought he picked it off at the goal line and his momentum carried him into the endzone which should have been a touchback. I was surprised that Kelly didn't complain more to the refs or maybe even asked for a replay review.
If his knee hadn't gone down at the one it would have been a touchback. When his knee went down that was his forward progress.
In real time at first glance, I thought his momentum carried him to the end zone. When I saw the replay, I didn't have a problem with placing the ball on the 1 yard line.
JOCO said it when he noted that Schmidt makes the defensive calls. I saw an ND defense with Morgan and MLB and I tell ya, BVG coached his ass off. We used Morgan brilliantly against LSU, and by that, I mean we put him in positions in which he didn't have to think or read. Schmidt didn't know the D that well as a freshman or sophomore either. We have a very LB reliant defense and if we're not in the right place, we're in big trouble. I agree that JS gets beat from time to time, and I agree he's a step slower than last year. At the same time, the other 10 guys are where they are supposed to be and that falls squarely on his shoulders. The only other call to make is the switch off between CB and safety. Farley has a knack for getting to the ball but he doesn't always make the right switch. Redfield has the habit of erring on the side of trying to kill someone, which in the big picture isn't that bad of a thing. Hopefully, he'll continue to get smarter as he gets older.
