It cracks me up, inspite of the lessons all fans have learned about recent coach searches, that is that lusting after top Pro coaches, or top college coaches is useless. I see guys talking about (Big Game) Bob Stoops, Nick Saban, and of course Jon Gruden as top choices to replace Weis if or when he is fired. No matter that USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, and Alabama failed to get those guys when they went after them. Michigan couldn't even get an alumni (Les Miles) to leave a place where he was successful. That Bama got Saban doesn't count because they signed him as a failing pro coach. I doubt if he would have left LSU for the Bama job or any other college job. You have to step down a notch, like Meyer at Utah or Rodriguez at WVA or Saban when at MSU to get a rising young coach. Guys like Brian Kelly no doubt will move up sometime soon, maybe this year.
You are so right Terry about getting top coaches to leave good jobs where they are successful. The Gators thought we had Stoops when Spurrier left and we all know how that worked out. Personally I think Weis can still be successful. When he as all his own players including the senior class. Time will tell.
The popular notion that Saban or Stoops would leave their respective jobs for ND is laughable... The greatest fantasy and sci-fi authors never could have put down such an unreal idea.
ND/Navy <r>Corey,<br/> <br/> Saben, Stoops, Gruden etc. etc, etc....These are names that come up every time and I agree they are NOT coming to ND! First of all they all like where they're at and secondly none of them are right for ND. Personally, I don't like any of those three either. <br/> <br/> If and when ND does replace CW they need to do what OSU, Fl and others have done. Find and up and coming successful coach out in the lower tiers who already understands the college game, is already a college HC and may have been on some DIV 1 staff previously as a coordinator/asst coach and so on. Brian Kelly comes to mind now but I'm sure there are others who would like the ND opportunity. <br/> <br/> But all that is a year away. In the mean time I'm hoping CW will get this thing going right and all those coaching change thoughts will be mute. <br/> <br/> Keeping CW for one more year isn't the same as letting Davie or Tyrone have one more. With both Davie and Tyrone everyday they stayed EVERYTHING about the program was going down further and further. <E>8)</E></r>
