Watching Charlie coach is like watching a drowning man in slow motion. He is in so far over his head that it is sad. One week he calls the plays. Next week someone else does the duties. Polian takes the rap for special teams that Charlie has been overseeing all year. Our O-Line cannot stand up against the big teams yets the Latina seems to have a pass. Tenuta and Brown are overkill. Write Brown a nice L.O.R. and send him packing to a HC position somewhere. These guys are very hard to watch.
Well, I've spent some time looking at the NCAA college rules and I can't find a specific rule against the receiving team batting the ball out of bounds. I do know that if the ball goes out of bounds off the receiving team, they get it at the point it went out. Also, if a player illegally bats the ball forward, it's a penalty but it should be from the spot of the foul and posession should remain with the receiving team. (from what I can see in the rules.) I watched the game at an airport bar. I had to watch with closed captioning. It wasn't very good. Can someone explain to me how the Navy receiver came down with his heel clearly out of bounds and the pass was ruled complete in bounds? Lastly, the announcers were pretty certain that Navy did not have any other time outs. The officiating crew felt otherwise. I hate to think that we had an officiating crew that didn't know the rules, couldn't count to 3 and had a replay official that was visualy impaired. Charile violated a cardinal rule of coaching today. "Never, never in the name of good sportsmanship, risk causing your team to lose a game that should have been won."
CBS had it wrong. There had been two replay requests by Navy and one was in their favor. CBS mistakenly counted that one as a timeout
A win is a win is a win. I was watching Georgia and Auburn and didn't see this game. It was on the same channel as the Gators though and I did see the last play when I switched to that game.
ok weird.. for some reason when i try to quote and insert a url on this thread, it is locking me up.. probably something on my end. anyway, i found this article describing the end of the Maryland Cal game. Maryland did exactly what Robbie Paris did today and was not penalized. In fact, the kid was praised for the play.. no one complained about it. In fact, every team I've played for or coached instructed kids to knock it out of bounds in that situation if they can't field it or if there is a scrum.
Notre Dame is still a work in progress. Is that progress at a pace ND fans can live with is the question. I would say not if Weis doesn't win the bowl game against what should be a decent team with a record of at least 8-4. The off season will be long and full of serious doubts if Chollie doesn't end ND's bowl drought this year because the opponent will look to be beatable instead of one of those BCS type juggernauts. Lose the bowl big and next season could be CW's last if there isn't marked improvement.
ND/Navy <r>Oh for pete sake! Instead of pointing out the errors why don't we talk about the positive points of the game. ND's defense came out and completely manhandled the #1 running offense in the nation! Compared to last year against Navy, the defense was 100% improved!!! <br/> <br/> CW's play calling from the 2nd qtr on was great. The adjustments he made at the half were great. The run game finally showed up! <br/> <br/> <br/> Call it what it is, ND beat the hell our of Navy and if it weren't for some luck and RAIN going for the squids in the final 2 minutes, the game never would have been that close. <br/> <br/> <br/> now.....<B><s></s><SIZE size="200"><s></s><e></e></SIZE>THE HELL WITH SYRACUSE<e></e></B></r>
Hey while we're talking about positive points let's not forget Walker who has really found the middle of the uprights. He's probably the most improved player on the team. Must be good coaching
ND/Navy <r>Gipper,<br/> <br/> You're right about Walker. Gotta give the kid credit. He really has turned it around from about as low as you can go. After all the crap he took, I'm sure he's feeling a lot better about himself these days. <E></E></r>
ND/Navy <r>For everyone who thinks we need to get rid of Weis you might want to take a look at this article by Ryan O'Leary on Blue and Gold. <br/> <br/> <URL url="http://www.blueandgold.com/content/?aid=6247">http://www.blueandgold.com/content/?aid=6247</URL><br/> <br/> I'm as big a Sub-alum as anybody and I don't mind telling you that a loss by ND is huge for me it hurts for days. I'd give anything to see ND get back to their rightful place in the college Football world but a change at the HC position now would be devastating to ND. <br/> <br/> We need to beat Syracuse, play at least a respectful game at sc then get a bowl and WIN it. Do that and we have taken a big step this year. <br/> <br/> I've mentioned before that I think we need a new O-Line coach and probably a new OC AFTER the bowl game.<br/> <br/> We need to keep the current recruiting class intact. It may not be as good as last years' but it has some potential big time players in it. <br/> <br/> For those of you who don't follow recruiting closely I can tell you that the Irish are looking at another MONSTER class for 2010. <br/> <br/> CW needs one more year. If he flops then so be it. At least the HC that follow him would have plenty of quality players on hand from the beginning.</r>
Does anyone know if Clausen is injured or just gun shy? He's not the sam QB who looked very confident and productive the first part of the season.
Corey.. <t>Always respect your thinking on issues but..........<br/> <br/> "You can see that for the negative or the positive. " On the phantom catch. Point was and is.... How do you (McNiel) let a WR at this point in the game smoke you and run right by you? Real DBS don't and he is a fraud as I stated. AMAZING.<br/> <br/> The mistakes this team made yesterday are to numerous to chronicle here. Navy is an average football team with huge limitations and we finally showed this in the third quarter but let them off the hook and had to hang on for dear life. True???<br/> <br/> JC has regressed to the point wher I hope Crist gets a legit shot in spring and fall to unseat him. Of course he has little protection from this O-Line but even when he does have time he is a turnover machine. True?<br/> <br/> The party line " No win is a bad win " I guess you can apply here but looking at the big picture like most of the other posters on other Irish boards are livid at the play yesterday on a team ten games deep into a season. With the exception of George this board has gone "Rose Colored"<br/> on ND football. To me that is sad. Not that it matters but I'm done posting on ND football here.</t>
Hey, head for the circle jerk that is the other sites. You know the ones where they're always complaining that the second team doesn't get any playing time. You know the ones that would have been bitching up a storm if a critical starter like JC or Allen had been hurt in the closing minutes because CW hadn't put in replacments. You can add to the threads about Charlie's son being on the sideline. And you and the poster who was bragging about rooting for Navy so that things could get better can hope that we don't go undefeated and win the NC next year because that would mean that Charlie would be at ND forever.
Are you suggesting that Larry, myself and others who question whether Charlie and his staff are up to the task are actually rooting against the Irish each week to expedite his exit? That's ridiculous.
I'm suggesting that there are such posts on the other boards. http://www.ndnation.com/boards/showpost.php?b=football;pid=93256;d=this
That's probably a good thing, Larry. Not for us. For you. The way you express yourself here, you are a walking stroke. I know firsthand how posting while in an emotional state can make one say stupid things. I've done it many times. You also are doing it. I would suggest that when you are so worked up you defer posting for 24 hours to give yourself a chance to dial down. Or.....you could just refrain from posting. Either way, you need to do something to preserve your health.
I was not able to see the game live yesterday, so I recorded it and just finished watching it. I have a few observations. -I'm not sure where, except glaringly for special teams, there is evidence of poor coaching. Overall, both offense and defense played well enough to win. -For me, one of the highlights was the interview with Swarbrick at halftime. I like the toughness he showed in fielding the questions. My first impression of how he handles himself is very positive. -I partially agree with Gip re: JC. I like his toughness in coming back after the big hit, and he is doing well with his shorter checkdown passes. But when he goes long - over 15 yards - he is not seeing the field the way he should and either is forcing his throws into coverage or not seeing the safety coming from the receiver's blind side. Despite this problem - which hopefully can be coached away - I believe he is doing a good job running the offense. -What a travesty to allow Navy two successful onside kicks. This cannot happen again. Special teams needs a lot of work. -The Navy catch was a good catch IMO. The toe touching down made it an inbounds catch. The heel touching down afterward was a second move, not a simultaneous move with the toe. What I don't understand is how the ref on top of the play could have called it a TD. -Nice running game today. Navy is a more-than-respectable opponent. We've had problems in the past with lighter, mobile D lines. I hope this is a predictor of things to come in our running game (I hope, I hope, I hope.......). -Very nice defensive performance today BY THE 1ST STRING. Again, we've been run over in the past by option offenses with lighter O lines. Today we held Navy to a little more than half of their per-game average. Not bad at all. -No problem with the call on Paris' batting the ball OB. I've seen that kind of call before in a similar - not exactly the same - situation. My question is why didn't he try to catch it whe he was half a body length higher than anyone else? -I'm betting that #49 Toryan Smith does not do a rollover in the end zone again if he ever scores another TD. Stupid. -Despite the heart-wrenching finish, I strongly disagree with the "keep-the-foot-heavy-on-the-gas" crowd that advocates pouring it on. I guess it's just a sad sign of the world we live in today, college football-wise. -I've always believed that one of the most popular pastimes in the world is second-guessing after the fact. I refuse to participate. Given the nearly bare cupboard following the TW years, the (hopefully) bottoming out last year, and the progress this year - although not nearly up to the expectations of many - I'm OK with where we are now. Frustrated, angry and disappointed over the losses to Pitt and BC, but not enough to jump overboard. Where others see bad coaching and bad players, I see a team inexperienced and not confident enough to expect to win every time they take the field. I give the program 2-3 more years to see if this group of freshmen-sophomores can keep growing mentally and physically to a level where they will enter every single game with a refuse-to-lose mentality.
The party line? Nonsense. I'd say that the other boards are 80% negative nancy. I also remember that there were some, not all, but some, who were speculating that 'Charlie may not work out' after the Bush push game because that showed he 'couldn't win the big one.' You can wonder how the kid got behind the DBs, I can offer up a reason that it was maybe the 3rd or 4th pass they had thrown all day... the DB made a mistake, it happens. Over the past several years, I remember reading too many posts that b*tched about us playing soft late in the game... This time the kid jumped the middle route and was wrong... So now we can b*tch about that. As I said in a section a while back.... if the reasons for firing for Ty were valid, and I believe they were, then you have to realize what an enormous rebuilding job we're facing. I've asked this question many times on the ND boards and none of the nancy boys there never seem to want to touch it... How is it that my Bama friends in these parts have more faith in ND??? As ND fans, we seriously lack perspective IMHO. We're not seeing the forest. If you realize and appreciate exactly what we've become, you realize what we need to rebuild. I'm sorry but you are looking at this ND team with circa 1993 glasses and this program hasn't been that in some time. The level of emotiposting at places like NDN are plague levels. I've mentioned this in emails with a few others. There are posters on some other sites who have become virtually invisible when ND wins... If ND doesn't win perfect enough, they squawk and call anyone who chooses to see hope a 'polly'... and when we lose, they don't STFU. Those posters are the cancer killing our fan base. There are plenty of reasons to bitch about Charlie, but if you can't see all that was overcome to get to here then you gotta step back and stop letting those negative nancy types affect you.
