Terry, Brandon's version of being served with divorce papers according to the Detroit News: And a spirited post on NDNation whose last two sentence I am in total agreement with:
Thanks Terry! The writer used the qualifer "generally". Like members of the Irish contingent on the board, he probably has a couple of Michigan fans he carries on with that he excludes from the DB category. I posted his note since it more eloquently made the point I was trying to make earlier: that those on both sides who are celebrating the series demise might down the road miss that jerk that they fought and loathed for so many years.
Also I wonder what the chances are that UM returns to South Bend in 2014 for the last game in the series.
While I'm going to miss the rivalry with so many of my neighbors and the folks in my office, I'm not going to miss the excessive celebration penalties, the phantom holding calls and the mugging of our receivers that happened so often in Ann Arbor with Big Ten officials. M was the only Big Ten team that we played that had to have THEIR refs when we played at THEIR stadium. The early season schedule almost always seemed to favor them as we were playing major conference teams while they started easy with MAC teams or teams like Appy St. or UMass.
Last year in Ann Arbor we had Big East Officals, Swarbrick got them to relent on the B10 refs. But yes I won't miss the Big 10 refs at AA. I wonder who has screwed us more though, Pac10 refs or Big 10 refs. I seem to remember Ara getting screwed out of likely Nat'l championships by USC players scoring without the ball, etc.
I have mixed emotions about this, I am very happy for Manti Te'o he really has been a great player for ND and deserves all the accolades that he is now getting. But there is a long way to go in this season and IMHO it's way too premature to declare that he has returned the shine to the Golden Dome. Now if we finish 10-2 or better with the losses being tough hard fought games, that's when I'd like to see him on the cover.
Manti <t>Terry,<br/> <br/> I tend to agree with you but I will say this about Manti...he's the best representative of this football team and the University that we have had in a long time. I like him a lot as a player and even more as a person. Just a great young man that we will always be proud to say played for Notre Dame.</t>
Terry, Brandon indicated that M will play the series through 2014. It would make no sense not to play. Both games will be prime time games and will generate even greater national attention given the ending of the series. Plus, the contract between the universities contains a penalty provision for any cancellation of a game that will take place three season from the time the teams last played.
Those not in the Midwest will get the Orioles on the cover to go with the story about the resurgence of teams in DC.
I understand your concern only 4 games into a 12-game season. However, I don't see it as a declaration of ND's return to prominence. I see it as a tribute to a very unique and special young man who is a credit to his family, to the university, and to the game of college football, and oh, by the way, ND's defense has looked pretty darned good through the first 4 games against stellar competition. So far, as of last Saturday, we've removed one of three preseason Heisman contenders on our schedule from further consideration. It doesn't mean we'll do the same to Jones or Barkley, but it's a worthwhile goal.
Hey Terry or Gip or Tom or Bill, If there is a problem with my new avatar, legal or otherwise, let me know and I'll take it down. I include Gip because Commish is employed by SI.
Commish liked getting Manti on the Midwest cover for 2 reasons 1. Since we're off this week there won't be a "jinx" effect. 2. He couldn't resist rubbing it in after the Michigan game. You really want a cover Doc?
