Forget Hendrix. I want Zaire to get some meaningful snaps this year. If Golson does not make his triumphant return next season we could be in huge trouble.
I don't think that is going to happen unless Tommy can't play and Hendrix shows us that USC is his best. From reading Kelly's press conference transcript he mentioned several times that Andrew can do better and that they expect him to do better in the future. When asked about Zaire, he's only an option if Andrew and Tommy can't go. I've heard they want to keep Zaire's RS so that he'll have 2 years as a starter when Golson leaves, if they burn the shirt with some meaningless mop up duty this year that'll essentially mean he'll be a Sr. in eligibility before he can expect to be the starter. Also was asked about Golson and said they talk to Golson 3 or 4 times a week, he is living in So. Cal working out with the QB Guru.
We have NO backup QB and I'm telling you Golson is not a lock to return. And I would add that Zaire played at a small HS and never saw anything remotely like he would see now.
I can not understand why Golson would not return. If he was going to leave because he doesn't like Kelly and/or ND then the time to have left was this past summer. He should have enrolled some place and this fall would have been his year to sit out and he could play next fall at the new school. If he doesn't come back in January and enrolls some where else I believe he will still have to sit out next fall and not play again till 2015 and because he's already burned his redshirt in 2011, he will only have 1 year to play and after not playing for 2 years he would be pretty rusty. I think the only way he could have played at another school in 2014 would have been if he had enrolled in a Jr. College and gotten a degree. The TE we had who left for Stanford did that, you have to get the JC degree then you can play anywhere no sitting out. But he's not in school at all. If there was some other reason, such as ND wasn't going to let him come back then I don't get why Kelly keeps going on about him being on track to enroll back in school in January.
You know that he was suspended from school for plagiarism. That is what "students" do when they are too lazy or too stupid to earn their grades. Do you find it odd that classwork was not mandated during his suspension? Basically he is sitting on his ass, taking in some private QB training and driving a fine automobile. When this kid was a freshman they wanted to play him but he was unable to grasp the playbook. It took him half the season as sophomore to get a handle on it.
Well yes I do know that was what he was suspended for, and I was surprised that he wasn't told that he had to take 12 hours this fall at an accredited college and pass all 12 or some type of academic goal. But he wasn't and it's been out their with no refute from ND or Kelly that he will re-enroll in January. If he was kicked out and not eligible for re-enrollment why the charade that he's coming back. And yes it has been discussed on a lot of forums that Golson was not a hard worker when it came to learning the playbook, while everybody says that Zaire is a hard worker. So my question is still why would he not come back at this point, if he was done with ND because it's too much work why didn't he enroll some place with less academic demands and move on with his career. I just don't get it.
I think he probably wants to come back. I'm not sure he can handle the responsibility. And I'm surprised how this has been handled so far by the university.
MD <t>This is the first I've heard about Golson having to get 12hrs at an accredited school before returning this fall. Kelly mentioned him yesterday and said either him or a member of the staff have contact with Golson every week.</t>
Tim he doesn't have to get 12 hours, I was just saying that I was surprised that he didn't have to enroll somewhere and take courses. I thought about Julius Jones who had to go to Ariz State and take a proscribed number of hours and get a certain GPA to qualify for readmission, but I've been told that his suspension had nothing to do with his GPA he was fine academically as George pointed out he got caught cheating/plaga Now what I am surprised at is that if in fact he did get caught cheating that he's going to be allowed back. At a lot of schools that is a serious violation and you are expelled and not allowed to return. Certainly at the Academies, and I'd bet at most top universities that would be true. This is from du Lac: Here are the Penalties: I have to assume that Golson was"flagarant" and his penalty was the bolded one below.
From what I posted above it's clear that he is going to be allowed back, if he wasn't there is no way that Swarbrick would allow Kelly to talk to the media about Golson being on track to come back, and that has been Kelly's stance since the day that Golson was dismissed from the University. I could see that when the violation was reported/discovered that Kelly may have lobbied very hard to have Golson recieve a penalty that would allow him to return after one semester which is allowed in du Lac. I could even imagine that some committee might have said they would do that but that there would be conditions that Golson had to fulfill in order to be readmitted. Although clearly in du Lac there are no conditions specified when the penalty is dismissal with the "option" to return after 1 semester. Any if Golson some how is not readmitted as George seems to imply is possible then Kelly is forked. Next year he'll have another RS freshman at QB and a true freshman as backup and Andrew Hendrix should he return. That is not a good situation. Of course if Zaire is the next Jameis Winston then we are fine. But if not ...another long year on offense.
I seriously doubt that Kelly got involved directly in the process, e.g., lobbying on Golson's behalf. I don't think it would be allowed, plus I can't see him doing that.
I think you are probably right Sid, traditionally the ND Coach has not had any say in non-football matters. But since Kelly came on board he has several times said that he acknowledges that the University makes the final decisions in those cases but that he just want's to be a part of the conversation. So in that light I could see Kelly not being consulted or not being a driver in the process but that he might have access to those who do and express support for an outcome that allows Golson to return. George isn't the only one who has made the comment that it's not a lock that Golson returns, I've seen that comment a number of places. I'm just trying to reconcile how that could happen based on what public knowledge there is about this. The University, Kelly and Golson have all been mum on exactly what he did, even though the Internet has ferreted out the plagiarism angle. Kelly and Golson both referred to it as "Poor Academic Judgement" and that's all we know on the record.
actually, I think one of the big 'changes' that Kelly has lobbied for since being hired at ND is to be involved in the Du Lac type of cases. If memory serves, he wasn't asking for control or even a vote, but to simply become a part of the process. I can't remember it all, but I do remember him talking about at least having a say in 2 things: admissions and Du Lac.
ND <t>On Golson,<br/> <br/> At any rate I don't think Kelly would keep answering questions about him if he didn't fully expect him to return this coming Jan. As far as the QB guru out in cali and the car I have know idea if those comments are true or total BS. Based on Kelly's comments alone I would be shocked if E. Golson wasn't back in Jan. Hopefully he can make up to the team and himself for what his actions have cost everyone concerned by getting his head on straight and performing at a high level on the field and in school.</t>
The QB guru and the car are both true. Kelly acknowledged the former and his team mates referenced the latter. I have no doubt that the team will welcome him back..... I am just mystified that there are not any apparent academic ramifications from this. That is a serious academic infraction.

Me too, I would have expected him to be dismissed permanently for this...but clearly DuLac allows for a range of penalties for this type of infraction of the honor code and his penalty is one that is spelled out in DuLac. Reading through the two things I posted on this, it does seem eminently fair, they acknowledge that there are different levels and accordingly they have different levels of punishment for each instance depending on how they view it. In the past we've lost players for a lot of things that would not even have registered on the scale at other schools, but this is one thing I thought we'd still be unyieldingly tough on the students. Well I hope he's embarassed and determined to show everybody that it was a really poor one time lack of judgement and not only do well on the field but also do well in the classroom. I hope he missed it and doesn't ever want to be caught up in this type of thing again. Lesson learned, I hope. Anyway back to the game at hand.
Regarding his lack of academic pursuits this semester his explaination was that he did not want to "cheapen" his ND degree by earning credits as some community college. (cheating doesn't cheapen his degree???)
