You have to believe that all six are finished this year. The three charged with the handgun charge as well as Butler will most certainly be cut from the team and released from the university. The latter group also face jail time. Uncle Rico must be ready to jump off a building. I can't even imagine how Kelly feels. And I hear the echo of Paul Hornung's comments from years past ringing in my ears. Excuse this double post. I'm rusty.
I doubt that 3 of the players owned the gun. The owner should admit it's his to get the charges against the other 2 dropped. The owner will most likely be gone. I'm not sure how the weed violations will play out. The criminal aspect will likely be quickly resolved. Team and university punishment is the big question. i'm guessing that the drug policy might be pretty strict.
I am always discouraged when things of this nature transpire. No one is exempt from this type pf news. Young men have to learn how to determine right from wrong. No university of r football team is exempt from this type of behaviour.
Why would anybody who is not a felon own and unregistered hand gun. Cripes they could have gone to Walmart and bought one legally and registered it. Also we all know that college kids smoke dope and drink underage. So if you are going to do that why do you decide to do it in a car with an unregistered handgun and then speed. That's just stupid. I do wish they wouldn't smoke dope, but they will. I can't comment on alcohol because I drank when I was underage so it'd be hypocritical. I agree with gip, the kid who owns the gun needs to step up and claim his weapon. The others are just stupid and will pay dearly. The kid Dexter Williams was poised to have a breakout season, even though he was the 3rd string back, he'd played so well in fall camp that he would have gotten a good share of the carries. Now likely Tony Jones Jr a true freshman will get his chance and he's also had a great fall camp. I will not be surprised if all of the 5 will be expelled, whether they will be eligible for readmission either in Jan or next summer I don't know. Devin Butler I don't know what to think, here is a reported "first hand" account of what happened. Whether it's credibile or just somebody on the internet wanting to seem like an insider I don't know.
I know this is not the popular position but we/y'all need to give this few days to settle down. The rest of the story will come out. 8)
There was another account that has Butler assaulting a police officer, throwing him down and punching him in the side several times. When other cops tried to pull him off he ripped the duty belt off the officer he was allegedly assaulting. ( At this point, if true, he could have been lawfully shot ). Instead he was supposedly tasered. The truth will come out in the road stop as well. The dogs were called because the players must have denied having or using pot. The dogs find the drugs and the police find a loaded pistol. Lucky nobody was shot there as well. I would say the big fear in this matter is if the gun was hot. By now the police know the answer to that one. Depending on the facts, it could be as simple as five possessions, a DUI, whatever firearms infractions they plead down to and several traffic violations.
Yeah I've seen that other version, if that's true he's gone. While of course we need to wait as I'm sure ND is doing to gather all the facts, but I will still be shocked if any of the 5 in the car play this year. They might be allowed back in the spring or next fall. I would be fine with them being dismissed from the team, but allowed to continue in school with diversion classes and community service.
- Butler couldn't play until October anyway. What was he thinking? This happened at the Linebacker across from the school... - What in thee hell was Max Redfield doing? We talk about senior leadership all the time, and I guess he's never heard of it. He's a red-shirt senior and the other four were two freshmen and two sophomores. So he took them out joy riding with a bag of marijuana and a loaded hand gun? The team may be better without him.
If this was the SEC, and the timing was better, I doubt anyone would miss any substantive playing time. The whole thing would draw out until some 'new story' comes along. Everyone would take a bite of the feel good sandwich and life would go on. But, that's not really how things work under the Dome and they'll all be gone for several weeks if not outright launched from the university. That's just how it goes.
Corey, Guilty until proven innocent? It may be as bad as it sounds...but there may be more to the story. :?:

Tony Jones Jr and Chris Finke are going to get more PT if Dexter Williams and Kevin Stepherson are dismissed. Jones has been outstanding in fall camp as a true freshman and 'Finke who played at Malik Zaires HS in Ohio and is a walk-on is frequently mentioned by Kelly as a guy who just catches everything thrown his way and he has very good quickness. Corey Holmes also could benefit. Holmes was reportedly struggling at times in camp but now will get more reps and maybe could up his play, he has a lot of speed. I wonder though where the depth at safety is going to come from. I guess Avery Sebastian the 6th year who has a long injury history will be that guy. The rest of the defense was looking pretty good, now it looks like we'll get beat deep a lot again this year.
KP, Very true. It's just hard in the environment at ND. I don't look for this to get drawn out over a long period of time.
I'm not a big fan of zero tolerance as we've all seen instances of a elementary school kid being nailed for bringing an Asprin or Advil to school or a butter knife in his lunch kit for spreading nutella on his crackers. The real problem will be the unregistered loaded gun along with the MJ.
Well Max Redfield has been dismised from the program, 'Butler is on indefinite suspension. The other players will face internal discipline what ever that means.
FWIW, Redfield was sent home from the Fiesta Bowl for violation of team rules. He's been a pain in the butt for awhile now. I wonder if he'll be allowed to finish his degree now, and will he have to pay his own way? It was pointed out somewhere that he was the Sr, how many Sr's hang out with the freshmen and sophmores? He was the one who was supposed to be the level headed mentor to these young guys not leading them into trouble. I am a littel confused though by the indefinite suspension for Butler. I guess it might get down to whether or not the DA files felony charges against him.
I hope that the freshmen learn quickly on the job. Tranquil is injury prone as is 6th year Avery Sebastian. After that the only guy with experience is Nico Fertita who's dad is now a billionaire. The rest of the safety crew are DJ Morgan, Jalen Elliot, and Spencer Perry all true freshmen. Neither Tranquil or Sebastian have more than average speed. Studstill is a stud but still a true freshman. Anybody want to venture how many trick plays this bunch will bite on this year? I thought last year was bad in that respect, this year could be worse.
