Well last spring 1) he wasn't given a chance, it was Zaire vs Golson. 2) He spent a lot of time on the road last spring with his girlfriend who was undergoing brain surgery. So he really wasn't competing for the job, and by the fall camp the staff was all in on Zaire and he was slotted as the backup. In fact a lot of people were really excited about Wimbush and thought that there was a good chance that coming out of camp it would be Zaire and Wimbush.
Tristen Hoge making noise apparently on the OL, pushing both Hunter Bivin and Mustipher for some playing time. Claypool and Kevin Stepherson both made some great catches in the highlight reels from UND. In Kelly's post practice interview, still very coy about the QB position. I wonder if he'll name a starter or wait till game day to let us know who the starter will be, since they are different styles of QB it would force Texas to prepare for both guys.
Remember Ajani Sanders? DB from Houston played for Lou. He's now the Head Coach and AD at Klein Forrest HS in the Houston area. He's got a big job to do, the team was 1-9 last year and picked again to be last in the district. He mentioned what he learned from Lou he intends to apply here and rebuild the enthusiasm for football as part of creating a winning environment.
Beet Root Juice? That's the Key for the Irish to get through a grueling August camp? I'll let Sid test this one out for me before I get some for myself! http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/081216aaa.htm[/quote]
Sid, Beets or no beets, Irish are favored by 4 1/2 points over the Longhorns, by Las Vegas at the moment.
From all the positive things I'm reading about Tony Jones Jr, how do you keep that kid on the bench this fall? I also keep reading that our WR's are showing promise but also the inconsistency that you expect from kids who haven't played very much. Stepherson seems to be one along with Tori Hunter who is consistent. CJ Sanders also looking good. The rest are up and down it seems. TE's Wieshar and Smythe seem to be solid and we can expect to have TE production again, unlike last year when there was virtually nothing. On defense lots of good things, but man are we thin at Safety...Redfield and Tranquil and a bunch of guys who have never played it seems. Hopefully Redfield finally has that year that his talent says he can have and that Tranquil can stay healthy. Tranquil is one of my favorite players.
ND <t>On Jones...I guess he's gettin a lot of reps due to the upper classmen being dinged up and he's taking advantage of it. Ideally you'd like to save this year but hell if he's that good play him!<br/> <br/> Stepherson...he's my guy. If the other WRs don't step up let the kid have the ball!!!</t>
Well I don't know what to say about that, it does seem like this approach ever really works. If they are both doing well, then it seems to me that it should be Kizer who starts, he was the starter last year from Game 3 through the bowl and did very well. While I know Malik is very competitive and has tremendous leadership skills it would seem to me that if they are both equal in camp then Kizer starts, it was up to Zaire not to be just as good as Kizer but to be better. Of course all of this could change.
 I like Kelly playing both QBs. They will be very difficult for opponents to prepare for. One is left handed; the other right handed. I'm sure Kelly will give each of them 1-3 special plays, each week, that will surprise the opposition...
Hard not to notice that last year's super frosh RB Josh Adams has missed a bunch of practice time. Dexter Williams and Tony Jones Jr both have the ability it seems to be great in that spot.
 :!: Kelly has loaded the offense with great skill players. The team has depth at all skill positions.
Re the QB situation, Zaire got the nod early last season since Golson took off and Kizer was a red shirt frosh. From the moment he brought the team back in the VA game he was the team leader. The kid had a great season. He now has more game experience than Zaire and the reason Zaire got the nod last season really doesn't mean much this season. I really think that Will Fuller made the Irish difficult to defend last season. Without him the WRs will have tighter coverage.
