I think that the record is held by Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson who was a juco transfer into Ore. St. Played one season, ripped ND in a bowl game and dropped out never having attended one class. Kudos to coach Ericksen.

Good pickup by the Irish. I wish he were a little faster, but if he runs good routes and has good hands ...that's good enough for college WR.

Yeah, his speed could be a little faster but I'll take that size/wt and a 4.5 speed with good hands all day. <E>8)</E></r>

Yeah there are a lot of excellent college WR's who are not blazers but run good routes and have excelent hands. Like every WR who ever played for BYU, that converted safety who played WR for Oregon this past year, and countless other white boys!! :)

4.5 is pretty darn fast, especially for a guy who is 6'1" and 200 lbs and has good hands.

Sid is right again and he had a fast player in his family, so he knows what fast looks like. Anything under 4.6 is fast. The annual NFL combine always exposes the reality that many (most!) college players had inflated numbers all along. Who's holding those stop watches anyway? The same high school and club coaches who're trying to sell the players...

This kid had offers from every major college in his home state of Florida and Notre Dame too. He's fast enough.

I know you guys are right, esp in college elite speed is not needed and 4.5/4.6 is more than fast enought. In fact elite speed without great reciever skills is just a fast guy running down the field.

I still remember being shocked to find out that Peter Warrick ran a 4.7 at the NFL Combine.

I think we sometimes confuse "fast" with "quick." Infielders need to be quick; outfielders need to be fast. Blinding speed is a great asset for a wideout or shut-down corner, but too many claims of "world class speed" are totally bogus. We already know what a football player with world class speed looks like. OJ Simpson was 6'3", 220lbs and he was part of an Olympic relay team that set a world record that lasted for decades. If they don't look like that, then its just the annual BS coming from the HS coaches who're trying to promote their kids...

<r>At any rate, Ferguson is the kind of WR we need when Floyd is finished playing at ND. The kind that you can throw the ball up to and expect him to go up muscle it away from the DB if necessary. Nice size to throw that endzone fade to. <E>8)</E></r>

Here's something to keep the juices flowing in the off season. Some of my favorite Notre Dame players were on this team, including Kory Minor and Mark Edwards. Also watch for USC TE Johnny McWilliams. Dave Francis worked with his dad in the Pomona School District. Johnny was the father of HC John Robinson's grandchild...
After the game, Robinson said that he wanted to "jump out of the airplane" on the flight back to Los Angeles...

One of my favorite games!! Who were the 2 USC QB's that day? I don't however miss the days of Kevin Kopka and Jim Sanson (who's only clutch kick came in 1996 at the game vs Texas in Austin to win).

Great game. Thanks, Jim. I remember Scott Sollman, #83. He was a friend of Brian's and an excellent baseball player on the ND baseball team.

What a satisfying win. I'll watch this again.....and again.....and again........

I hope Gip watches this one. He'll see that although Powlus did not win a Heisman, he was a pretty good college QB.

I remember it well. My first chance to watch a live ND game. Several members of the "Prodigy" gang were in attendance that day as well. I had zero confidence Sanson would pull off that kick but with only a minute or so left in the game that ended up be the difference for the Irish. I do recall JO'Co, saying "don't worry, he'll make it". He was right.<br/>

Ricky Williams was in that game for the Texas. think he was only a freshman or sophomore.</r>

Texas had another back who had a great career in Kansas City who was a Sr. I believe that year, Ricky played a lot of FB that year. For some reason I can't remember the name of that other back.

I'm pretty sure I watched nearly every game he played at ND. I was in Chicago for his debut vs Northwestern. My kids were at ND when he was QB. His nickname among the students was "Glassman" because he was always injured.
