Notre Dame <r><QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> Both of these would be great in my opinion. Whatever that's worth.</r>
as long as we're teaching proper blocking and tackling, while getting the guys to execute, I'm all for it.
Irish Hockey split with Wisconsin, won the game at South Bend and got shutout in the game today at the United Center in Chicago. That ends our winning streak at 16 games. Had to lose sometime, sometimes I think it's better to just lose one like this and take the pressure off. We won the season series with Wisc 3-1. Irish Women Basketball dominated Clemson 90-37.
Terry Joseph is the new safeties coach. https://www.onefootdown.com/2018/1/...oseph-to-coach-safety-position-fighting-irish
looks like we are taking our time to find the right guy, or maybe it's a contract negotiation situation? Either way, we'll find out soon enough.
Irish definitely need another OL in this class, they hosted a kid from Cali this past weekend, Jared Patterson. He's got UCLA and Michigan offers, said a lot of nice things about his visit, but for the most part they all say those nice things. Irish still working on Nickolas Petit-Frere who is highly rated. but he's got a lot of big time offers so it's going to be a game day decision as they say. Dan Mullen is picking up steam for the Gators who are also in the race. Even if Patterson commits, they will certainly take Petit-Frere if he decides to verbal.
Tim reading tea leaves it does seem like Frye is the guy, but I think Bob Bostad who is the current Wisc LB coach, but who has coached OL most of his career is interviewing today. So I expect we'll know something this week. I will say that BC's OL this year seemed to be pretty good and tough. After we beat them they went on a roll and really put up some big numbers running the football. The Wisconsin guy intrigues me, they have had a good OL for a long time, it's one of the core principles of any Wisc team since Barry Alvarez showed up...thou shalt run the football. I'm not sure why the move to defense for him. I looked him up and he was the Wisc OL coach up through 2011 and then moved to the NFL for 4 years before getting back to college in 2016 and 2017. Bret Bielema was the Wisc Coach when he was there, and Bret was very successful at Wisconsin and they of course ran the football. So as I said he's intriguing.
Jeff Quinn has been promoted to O-line coach. https://www.ndinsider.com/football/...cle_2896b700-0077-11e8-b99f-d74003cefdf5.html
I have to tell you I'm absolutely floored by this. I don't know Jeff Quinn, and I don't know if he'll be great, just OK, or awful, I just know he's been out of coaching for 3 years working on the back office staff at ND. He's certainly got a lot of experience with the position, and he's been with Kelly for a long time. So maybe it's ok. I was just looking forward to giving either the BC or Wisc guy a chance, young/new blood. I hope it works out, I just never saw this coming.
On an unrelated note the women's soccer coach has resigned to spend more time with her young family. A person who seems to have followed the program closely seems to think they will hire from within, a former player for Men's Coach Bobby Clarke who retired recently, Nate Norman. Womens program was once on par with the womens basketball when Randy Waldrum was the coach. When he resigned to come to Houston and coach the Dash (from which he was fired midseason last year). They won a NC, and were always one of the best programs in the country. Since his retirement they have been a good not great program, definitely having slipped.
You know those guys aren't really in a back office making coffee and filing papers, right? In fact, there was a segment on the Finebaum show regarding this in which someone with the NCAA was bitching about schools abusing these 'extra staff positions' and stuffing them with actual coaches who work the field during the week, and best of all, since they aren't listed as coaches, ARE the actual coaches that the players work out with during 'restricted workout' periods. The whole segment built up to this massive staff and everyone just assumed he was talking about Alabama, but they were not. Alabama is the 2nd worst abuser of the consultant/office manager/director of football operations/field consultant kinda guys. The team with the most was Notre Dame. This guy hasn't been sitting on his hands for 3 years.
It's like you have forgotten all the times I wind up producing my sources in times like these: https://www.cbssports.com/college-f...all-staff-sizes-survey-shows-inconsistencies/
For those who are not adverse to having their angst clouded by historical facts, here are a couple of excerpts from Eric Hansen's SBT article today about Quinn's background: Is it possible that Kelly hired him to have him on staff as a silent understudy to HH because Kelly had an inkling he'd be losing HH eventually? Could it be that Kelly interviewed other candidates and felt that Quinn was more qualified? Chew on those possibilities. Sean Mele, an OL who played for Quinn at GVSU, did an interview over on ISD. He's pretty positive about Quinn. I still wish we'd gone for either the BC or Wisc guy, but of course none of us can know how this will turn out. Maybe Quinn will do a great job, and maybe those other guys would have flopped. Either way I'm over it and moving on, I'll have to just wait and see. I do hope that his familiarity with the team, the offense, the players, and all that is a big positive. If he's able to hold on to the one verbal we have in Luke Jones, and some how we can land another OL it's a win. Here's a link to the Mele article. https://irishsportsdaily.com/s/5298/mele-talks-about-his-former-line-coach-jeff-quinn
Thanks, Terry. He is my new hero. He said what needed to be said, at least IMO. Time to move on. P.S. I would never speak that way to my Skybox friends, if I have any left. I don't agree with the tone, but I agree with the message: Let it go and see how it plays out.
