Oh I'm fairly certain that Sid's dig is directed at me, at least partially. I have no issue with Rees the human being. I am sure he's a great kid. That isn't to say that all the kids playing at ND are/were saints.. far from it.. but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. My issue is flat out with his ability and I most certainly question the coaches decision. As I mentioned in another post in another section, my issue with the Kelly program is the indecision in a fluid moment. You can say that it's honorable to 'stick with your man' but that's not what happened here. He threw Crist under the bus in an almost unspeakable manner while sticking with a guy who clearly does not possess the same skill set as the guy he replaced.. nor does he possess the skill set that the guys behind him hold. As much as I hate, and I hate saying this, to say it there does seem to be an air of credibility to the 'Kelly's guys vs the other guys' rumors. This is NOT the only position in which his decision has been questioned. I think Carlo should be on the field as well. I agree with the assessment that Carlo makes mistakes in pass coverage... so does the other guy. Carlo clearly is a run stopper (that can't be argued) and the other guy is not. One guy gives us at least one element that is a positive, the other guy gives us nothing. BTW, I too think it's a bad decision to give Tommy and Carlo the same punishment. It's a bad message.
Carlo did not commit a crime. He has not plead guilty to anything. He has not had a trial. Yet he gets the same punishment as Rees who plead guilty to two charges, was underage and by all accounts resisted arrest to some degree. Carlo is getting railroaded by his coach without due process just so he has one less position decision to make. If I was him I would at least be investigating transfer opportunities at this point.... he has two years of eligibility left. Another thing that puzzles me. The party was hosted by John Goodman at a house he was renting under his name. No charges or punishment for him? I agree with Corey 100% across the board.
Rees\, Calabrese <r>He says <B><s></s>respective<e></e></B> suspensions. Maybe Rees' suspension will be longer than Calabrese? Not sure. I am fairly sure Kelly will be asked about it on Friday media day. After what the NCAA did to Penn St., I'm sure every coach is gun-shy now. <br/> <br/> At any rate that sets stage for competition for the starting QB between Golson and Hendrix only as I'm sure Kiel will be redshirted.</r>
Suspension <t>Well I guess I should have read a little more. It's a ONE GAME suspension for both, that's it. My bad.</t>
2012 season <t>well the boys over on ND Nation are more pessimistic than ever these days it seems. Just a simple once around the board over there and you find no one seems to have any good words about Coach Kelly these days. He can't say or do anything right in their eyes it seems. Everything is a negative. seems they are all ready for a 5-7 season this year but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how the Irish pull that off. Let's see now.....I guess they can manage wins over Navy, Purdue, Boston College, Wake Forest and Pitt. Other than those.... no chance. How could we possibly beat teams like Mich St., BYU, Stanford or Miami? and Lord knows we stand no chance against Michigan, Oklahoma or USC. <br/> <br/> I'm really surprised many people are still Notre Dame fans at all. We are never get a wonderful coach like Kiffin, Stoops or Meyer. We would have great teams agai with one of those guys right?<br/> <br/> I guess they are right, we are a 5 win team at best. We are in for a rough season and I'm sure it's Coach Kelly's last. So be it. Who will be the next coach that everyone hates?</t>
I have this vision of NDNation posters being a bunch of Rumpelstiltskin clones. One day, they all en masse are going to cry and whine so loud and jump up and down so hard that the floor beneath them is going to cave in, and they all will disappear. NDDation will be no more and the world will never notice.
That's right. What possible chance do we have lads? The big express is rolling down the tracks right at us and we have nothing to stop it with. Our quarterback is in the clink; our middle linebacker is plotting his escape; our best pass rusher transferred to Florida somewhere; and all the Penn State players are tranferring to schools on probation where they can get molested again... What chance do we have against all of this public school money and power? The schedule is against us; our coach is a maniac; our receiver left for the NFL; and did I say that our coach is a maniac? I can hear it coming.......
A lot of the stuff won't go away until we start winning again. Complaining about Helmet stickers at the neutral site games, the shoes for the Navy game, whether we have natural grass or synthetic turf, even the Jumbotron are the symptoms of so much losing. Some things haven't been helped by Kelly either. His mouth has gotten him in trouble, from the post game comments "that's the way we roll' after asking why he disdained the FG from a kicker who was incredibly accurate and from chipshot range to throw a fade to the endzone that was Int in the Tulsa game sealing the loss. Then the whole fiasco about his guys vs Weis guys, and more recently he's been lobbying for Field Turf till he backed off and said it was above his pay grade (ok so why did you bring it up in the first place). Then of course there are his sideline antics. Charlie liked to talk and couldn't shutup, Kelly seems to be falling into that same trap. I didn't like Willingham refusing basically to answer any question, but there is a happy medium. But if he wins 9 or 10 games this year including a bowl game, and then challenges for NC going forward in 2013 the tide will turn. I like Ara not just because he won, but even allowing for his time being a different time with regards to the media, he handled himself with dignity and class. He was tough with his team but never would have gone off like Kelly has done.
Possibly but it seems to me that it's the plaint of little aholes that have lost sight of the big picture. Oh and for the record, I think that the shoes for the Navy game are great.
I'll take it one step farther. Idiots like these people have been around forever. They never have had the mental toughness to see the big picture. That's why they focus on inane, meaningless issues like Terry describes above. Factor in the ubiquitous internet, and they now have voices where in pre-internet days no one would listen to them. I tire easily of the type of people who populate forums like NDNation. They are not fans. They are lost souls seeking recognition by masturbating their contrarian personalities.
Ara was always my favorite ND coach because he was the coach when I was there. If you haven't read it, the book Resurection about Ara taking over ND's team is a fun read. I hope Sid has read it.
 re: Shoes for the Navy game. At the risk of being branded a Little Ahole with a plaint... I don't like those shoes either. They're fairy boots, not football cleats. We need less fashion and more football. http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=109&f=2594&t=8972037
I'm sticking with my story. I don't like Kelly. I don't like several things about him. #1 I don't think this man is capable of calling plays and coaching on the sideline at the same time. He spends too much time yakking about what went wrong on the last play and by the time he gets around to sending in the next play he's up against the clock which in turn makes him even angrier. He takes his own play calling personally. #2 He is indecisive in his personnel selections. #3 He is divisive behind the scenes. And he has surrounded himself with YES men. This is Year Three. I want to be wrong about this guy but I don't think I am.
I have read Resurrection. Great read. Great memories. It took me back to my student days. I knew a few of the players on that team who were classmates. How he moved players around in 1964 and changed their positions from the previous 2-7 year under Hugh Devore remains to this day an historically magnificent example of coaching.
