Hi Tod. Always good to see you here...

    re: ND OL

Duncan is doing so poorly, that I'm wondering how long before we see true freshman Matt Romine, who is his backup. Romine was one of the top HS linemen last year and was doing well the last I heard. He couldn't possibly do worse than Duncan, who very often whiffs and allows a sack without making any contact at all...

    Larry,

I'm not worried about the staff. We have true freshmen backing up freshmen and sophs and this mess was left for the staff. They didn't create it. There's nothing that can be done. You can't make the kids older, you can just play them until they play themselves into or out of a permanent role. There's no magic wand for the Oline. Only time will solve this...

PS. Blue & Gold Illustrated has been predicting that this would probably happen for the last three years and now it has. You can't beat a prime-time schedule with no upperclass linemen...

    My....

<t>Point and its a valid one as I saw this discussed on other boards is as bad as Duncan has been do we as a program not have one guy we can try to get him off the field?<br/>
It's like a liberal defending Bill Clinton, no matter how big moron he is and what he does he is never held accountable for his actions. That is what worries me about the O-Line coach who makes the call here. Yes I am concerned.<br/>
    <br/>
Off the topic did anyone notice Arizona St and its five personal foul penalties Sat late versus CU? Erickson and thug ball is back.</t>

It appears that Henne may be done for the season possibly has a torn ACL. So it will be Mallet vs Clausen. The 2 top QB's from last years HS Sr's. The publisher of the Scout UM site has taken any number of shots at Clausen ever since he signed with ND and Mallet signed with UM. He clearly was miffed at the press Clausen got vs what Mallet got.

This sort of leaves Henne in a tough spot. If he is gone for the year, he would be eligible to apply for a medical redshirt or he could just go to the draft. But NFL clubs might not want to spend much of a draft pick on a QB who didn't play his Sr. year and if he gets a Medical redshirt and Mallet has a strong freshman year ...then there is a qB controversy.

Here's a link to Aaron Taylors "LegendsOfSouthBend" Website. He interviews Rick Mirer about the Penn State game. Overall not a bad site to bookmark for Irish fans.

Funny you should mention Taylor Doc. I was thinking the other day about possible future O line coaches and I was trying to remember some of the many O linemen we had that learned under Joe Moore and went on to the pros. He was one of my candidates. I don't think he has any coaching experience but he's a bright guy who could be a good teacher. You have to pay attention to anyone who has that big a head.

For obvious reasons he was never one of my favorite college football players but I do feel very sorry for this young man. What a tough break....

Hang in there Bobda....things will get better. Maybe even this weekend....!

    Go Blue!!

Problem is I don't think just being a great player makes you a great coach. I doubt if Joe Moore was ever as good a player as the guys he coached. If that were true then Bart Starr would be a Hall of Fame coach.

    Exactly Sid!

I've seen ND fans wish that Tony Rice or Chris Zorich could be brought back as coaches, or the Rocket or Tim Brown. Always assuming that 1) they would be great coaches or 2) they even had a smidgen of desire to be coaches. Coaching isn't an easy gig.

Texas fans all want Major Applewhite to be the next OCoord or even the Head Coach...now they might be right there Major was a savy player and has a tremendous desire for coaching and is currently doing well working his way up the ladder. Currently at Alabama.

Doc, where was the story about Henne's ACL posted? The Michigan web sites, when not posting topics about drawing and quartering Lloyd, had a few commnents about Henne having a possible broken leg. Is this offical?

BT. Thanks. When you were a young guy attending school in Columbus, did you ever think you would, at some distant point in the future, lend comfort and sympathy to a Michigan fan about their football team?

Interesting topic about players who become coaches.
First I agree that a great player doesn't necessarily become a great coach. If that were true Ted Williams' teams would have hit .350. On the other hand we've seen how some coaches have spun off diciples who have become successful in their own right. Some individuals like Aristotle can learn from the great ones and shine in their own right.
I wouldn't expect the Rocket to be able to teach players how to outrun the opposition. That's a matter of individual talent and skill. But a position like O line that relies so much on training and technique, I think someone who has learned from a good coach and succeeded with that knowledge could become a good coach himself.
Woody had Bo, Lou had Skip, you never know.

That's funny! you had me for a moment. When it first came up, I did not scan the entire page and assumed from its appearance that it was ESPN. I focused on the picture of Clausen and read the copy beneath the picture. I thought, Boy, ESPN is harshly sarcastic. Then I saw the comment about Charlie Weis saying the running game was not important and was "so 1950s". It was only then that I realized I had been duped. The rest of the page is hilarious. Nice going, Bobda.

You've got to be kidding me...comfort and sympathy are nothing...I've got to take Crazy John his meds every morning and evening...they wanted someone to hold the urinal for him but I drew the line at that...I just loosen the straight jacket temporarily, after first removing all sharp objects from the room.

Sid...notice where that link is from...your favorite folks.

I saw it yesterday...thought about posting it here but the last time I posted something I thought was humerous it sort of backfired. :)

Besides, after y'all beat us in a couple weeks I'd be eating my humor. :?
