FSU players saying and doing FSU things... We had bigger problems back then that missing out on him.

As for hockey, I'm not saying we can't compete in our current conference. I do believe that we aren't a very good fit at this time in terms of style of play. We still have that big body, grinding and almost NHL style team that plays well in old CCHA and WCHA. Hockey East is a different animal with very fast teams who play a more Euro style of hockey. I think we can do one of two things. We can change what we do, or we can stick it out and hope the conference (especially officials) adjust to us. Right now, from the few games I've seen, we're getting murdered on some ticky tack clutch and grab calls that aren't penalties in our previous league.

Yep in fact with a 55% graduation rate, FSU has plenty of no-brainers.

Well after all the excitement of beating Duke in our first ACC game, the team came out and lost to NCState last night. Huge difference in FT as NCState went to the line 32 times and the Irish only 12 times.

I got this off another board. I'm reminded of the advice Arthur Ashe had for young black athletes many years ago. He told them that they had a better chance of getting into Harvard Medical School than playing in the NFL or NBA. That is bascially the conclusion of this research. The message is to be concerned with things like grad rates for black athletes.

    _________________________________________________

Interesting research and report that some guys from the Graduate School of Education at UPenn put together concerning male student-athletes in the major revenue-generating sports conferences.

The research presented lists winners and losers (colleges and universities with exceptionally high and low statistical indicators of equity for Black male student-athletes). Statistics are also furnished for each individual college/university in the six athletic conferences. The report concludes with recommendations for the NCAA and commissioners of the six major sports conferences, college and university leaders, coaches and athletics directors, journalists, and Black male student-athletes and their families.

Many interesting comparisons are offered, including looking at the gaps between black student-athletes against all student athletes as a whole, the student body as a whole and black non-athletes, focusing on the gaps.

10 Universities with Highest Black Male Student-Athlete Graduation Rates

    1. Northwestern University 83%
    2. University of Notre Dame 81%
    3. Villanova University 78%
    3. Pennsylvania State University 78%
    5. Vanderbilt University 74%
    6. Duke University 73%
    7. Wake Forest University 70%
    7 Georgetown University 70%
    9. Boston College 68%
    9 Stanford University 68%

10 Universities with Lowest Black Male Student-Athlete Graduation Rates

    1. Iowa State University 30%
    2. University of South Florida 31%
    2. University of Arizona 31%
    2. University of Arkansas 31%
    5. Florida State University 34%
    5. University of Florida 34%
    7. Indiana University 36%
    7. Arizona State University 36%
    7. Mississippi State University 36%
    10. University of Minnesota 37%

Other interesting tidbits that stood out to me.
    - Alabama has the 2nd best graduation rate among black student athletes (66%) in the SEC, trailing only Vanderbilt (74%)
    - The gap between black student athlete graduation rate and overall undergraduate rate (all students) at certain schools of note: -15 for ND, -35 at Michigan, -36 at Ohio St, -36 at Texas, -44 at USC, -10 at Alabama, -27 at Stanford, -12 at Miami, -37 at FSU, -7 at Penn St, -9 at Oregon. Some of the "good" gaps at some schools are a result of their overall student population grad rates being quite low, as compared to say ND which graduates 96% of its overall undergrads.

GAIII declares for the NFL draft. I'll bet he's undrafted. I'm sorry he didn't achieve what everybody wanted for him when we signed him but he clearly was going to be #4 on the depth chart going into Spring. With Folston, McDaniel and Greg Bryant we have plenty of RB's.

I would think he must have been told he'll be drafted; why else would he declare for the draft? He can never play college ball again, he doesn't have a degree and if undrafted he has no job either.

Well he's in an odd spot, maybe Pops has contacts who are telling him he'll be drafted. But just exactly what is it about him that would make a team draft him. He hasn't even been as good as Darius Walker or Cierre Wood who both left early and both went undrafted. All they have to go on is his measureables...he's big and fast like Packers RB Eddie Lacy but plays more like Marcus Wilson.

KR? Well he's a good not great KO returner. He's not Devin Hester.

If he'd transferred he ran the risk that he wouldn't start at the new school either and he'd have to transfer down a division to play next year since he's not graduating in the Spring (that I know of).

I have to wonder if Kelly sort of pushed him out the door, clearly from things his pops tweeted he wasn't happy with GAIII use by Kelly or Kelly in particular. But in this case I think Kelly is in the right, he gave him all the opportunity you could give a RB and nada...break into the clear and he's gone, but a pinky tackle brings him down.

GAIII is not a very good receiver, I don't think much of his blocking and as has been said often, he runs soft and goes down easy. Let's face it, an empty slot to recruit in is more valuable than he is.

point of order. Northwestern has like 3 black dudes. Isn't there some sort of minimum in order to qualify for the study? :p

Alabama's showing is quite impressive, especially when you consider the number of players (AA) that leave early for the NFL and/or transfer. Basically, the guys who are staying wind up walking and that's what this is really all about.

<t>We'll I'm sort of like Terry on GA. A week or so ago I was wondering what Kelly would be doing with him this upcoming season because he got less and less carries as this past season wore on and with the way Folston was coming on. Couple that with the word that Bryant is even better than Folston and McDaniel continuing getting consistent yds and it just didn't look good for him. He was and never will be a true between the tackles RB. I was kind of surprised he took the jump to NFL but I'm thinking maybe the punishment he got that kept him out of the bowl game was the last straw for him. Hope he gets his degree cause I don't think he will get drafted. Good luck to him though.</t>

    :)

The argument against GAIII when he came in the door, was that he was just a track star and not a real football player. Now we have the answer: he's just a track star...

HAHA! I think they have 6 or 7. I was trying to think of a couple on the baseball team, but they are 2 sport guys who play football.

I think finally we have some depth and talent at QB. Golson is a known quantity, Zaire is in many ways the anti-Golson. Where as Golson was reportedly sort of lazy with his work ethic as a fresh and soph, Zaire has reportedly attacked the film room and is ahead of where Golson was mentally. Also Kizer that kid coming in the 2014 class supposedly had a great Sr. year and looks like another good QB for Kelly.

All of them fit the mold that Kelly wants, can run the ball when needed.

Of course this just means that they'll all get hurt or transfer!!
