LOL! I don't think that either team really needs the other, but it would be fun if they meet once in awhile.
Today's fans, as evidenced from the two posts immediately preceding JO'Co's, do not appreciate the bond that was forged between Purdue and ND during the years when ND was shunned by the Big 10 and only Purdue stepped up to play us. Now, with the turnover in administrations over the years and the evolution of administrative attitudes toward the game, motivated in part by money and conference realignment, who knows what will happen? As for me, I hope the rivalry remains intact.
Sid I do appreciate the series and tradition and hope it continues. The only part I don't like is that Tim ends up happy most often. :?
I think I'm being misunderstood. I know full well Tim's feelings. I just wish we'd quit making him feel fulfilled so often. But Jim, it doesn't follow that growing up in Indiana means you automatically have to hate Purdue. I realize that at birth each resident is given one of those reversible jackets (ND for football season and IU for basketball season) but still...
Stu I apologize for how I interpreted the words to your post showing the locomotive crashing. Upon further refletion, I recall that you've always shown respect for the rivalry. Tim's feelings toward Purdue are an anomaly. That's not meant as a dig. I like and respect Tim. What I mean is that it's rare to find an Indiana fan who "hates" Purdue and vice versa. I have a close friend who feels like Tim toward Purdue and Notre Dame. I have a thick skin, and I've had fun with him about it over the years. The so-called haters exist, but in all the years I've spent in Indiana, most fans are far from hostile, and even jocular, in expressing their feelings about the other side. I know from first-hand accounts that other intrastate rivalries give rise to raw emotions, e.g., Clemson-South Carolina, Auburn Alabama, etc., but that kind of atmosphere does not prevail in Indiana. Carry on, gentlemen.
It's being reported that Tom Hammond is out as the Notre Dame Football play by play announcer and will be replaced by Dan Hicks a Univ of Arizona grad who was smart enough to marry Hannah Storm! He's done some ND games already when Hammond was off doing horse racing. There is joy all over the nation!
I've never understood the ire toward Tom Hammond, but as they say, you can't please everyone. If Hicks is married to Hannah Storm, he's OK in my book.
I never liked his work for ND. Never. We have our own network, yet the coverage has not really reflected that until we hired Mike Mayock. I don't really need a homer. NBC is a national broadcast company in more than name alone. That being said, we are part of their brand and I've felt that they didn't do a very good job of perpetuating that brand. When your best in game analysis prior to hiring Mayock was coming from a dyed in the wool Trojan like Pat Haden, that should tell you something. Just give me someone who knows the game and will call it straight up. Toss in the cute little back stories about where each kid is from and blah blah blah.. I'm glad to see our coverage growing with the quality of football. That's just my two cents.
Wow! Speaking of Hannah Storm, she was seriously injured in a propane gas grill incident: http://news.yahoo.com/espns-hannah-storm-returns-3-weeks-accident-175720614--spt.html
Tarean Folston the Fla RB committed to ND today. He's supposed to be a better version of Theo Riddick, that's saying something. With Greg Bryant and now Folston this is our best group of RB in one class in quite awhile. Bryant is getting a lot of good reviews in San Antonio for doing things that HS RB's don't usually do, pick up blitzes, block for other backs, etc. He could see a lot of playing time next year with Wood and Riddick gone.
I think it will be Sid. BTW when you and gipper were students there did they do this sort of thing when ND had a TV appearance?
Terry back then ND was on national TV once or twice a year. Commercial breaks were half as many and probably half as long. They didn't want commercials with studs like Sid and I. As you recall we were yet to have ladies at the school.
