I have a complaint about par 3's... Most of the ones I play these days require for me a min of a 6 iron. What happened to the days when you were hitting a 9 iron or a wedge to at least 1 par 3. :?: :?: :?:
That's pretty impressive, says a lot about his athletic ability that only a few summers ago he was kicking Lance what his names butt in golf and now he's the best player in his baseball league! Your wife must have a very athletic family!
I knew it!!! Congrats, AJ! TOK...who cares if you hit a 9-iron or a 6-iron fat...it's all the same.

Rats....I already have a hole-in-one so there goes that excuse. It was a pretty legit one hopper into the hole on a 165 yarder surrounded by traps and water....hit 7 iron.....I know...I know...the ball was flying well that day. I have also hit three different fairway second shots on par fives that apppeared to disappear into the hole from where I stood but all three wound up as tap in eagles right behind the hole. Man a double-eagle would be the best I think.
I've never had an ace either. Came close once on a 180 yd. Par 3. My best effort was an eagle on a Par 4. I crushed a driver and was looking at wedge coming in from straight out, maybe 70 yards. I bladed my shot so precisely that I did not disturb a single blade of grass, send a screaming heat seeking fader directly toward the target. It hit the flag stick squarely about halfway up and dropped in. I still get crap for that one. My brother in law had a doublke eagle last year in Hobe Sound on a 540 yard Par 5. Big drive and a 3W that rolled right in. Unreal!
Makes for a good question....would you rather have a double-eagle or a hole-in-one? I think there would be different opinions. I too have had a 2 on a par 4. I had played the green before and I knew the break which was pretty severe to the left and after a big....big drive cutting the dogleg I had about 60 yards to the hole and I actually planned it out and played the break and it was perfectly hit and rolled right in. Man....that was satisfying. One of my most exhilirating shots was a blind pitch from 50 yards to #8 at Oakland Hills....( The "Monster" ). I could only see the top of the flagstick and it was my first time playing at Oakland Hills. That guy Chris Hansen of NBC fame was then a local newscaster in Detroit and he was good friends with the member I knew who invited me out to the course. He was walking toward the pin as my ball landed and I heard a soft clang as he looked down and exclaimed....."Holy ****....you canned it!" That was for a member Eagle three on the 490 yd. par 5 ( it is a brute of a par 4 for the pros as you might know). I had also birdied the #1 handicap hole....#5....three holes before. In spite of those two great scores I only shot 41 but it wasn't bad considering my triple bogey--double bogey start.
Double-eagle is rarer <t>I'm not sure of the numbers but isn't the double-eagle much rarer than the hole in one (which is actually just an eagle, right?)</t>
I am re-posting this because of the technical glitches... Makes for a good question....would you rather have a double-eagle or a hole-in-one? I think there would be different opinions. To answer KP.....I have to believe a double-eagle is indeed rarer than a hole-in-one so to me that would be a bigger thrill although my ace was pretty exciting.
Double Eagle vs Hole in 1.... neither of which I'm qualified to discuss from personal experience. But if I had my druthers I'd still rather have the hole in 1! Terry
MCG, I thought so too. I've played golf for almost 40 years and never had a hole in one or a double eagle, but I think most people's first reaction is that a hole in one is the ultimate shot.
Well then I am fortunate to have experienced the "ultimate" shot. I guess if that's how most people feel about the two I would rather have my ace. I was damned close as I said on three different double-eagle chances.
About 10 yrs. ago I was playing one of the Disney courses when a woman playing in the group behind us aced a short par 3. Since we had been witnesses we told her that we'd report it to the club house, which we did. I had the chance to watch her play a few more holes and quite frankly, she was pretty bad. I saw her top a shot into a small pond and hit a couple of shots really fat. We were in the clubhouse bar when she came in with a nice plaque given to her by Disney for her hole in one. I nearly chuched my beer when she said to her husband "Isn't this beautiful? How come when I got that hole in one last year, that course didn't give me something?" My choice would be a double eagle for 2 reasons. One, It's a better score (3 under) and two, I'd buy myself the biggest plaque for it.
How about getting both in one shot... a double eagle on a par 4! This coming from a guy that calls the media when he shoots par on a single hole!
I had a friend who was playing in his golf league a couple of years ago on a short par four... He knocked his second shot in for an eagle...and lost to the other guy's hole-in-one.
