You are twisting what I am saying. I am saying that, Meyer would be better served just shutting up until they win. Once they win, then they can boast all they want. Where I am taking Dave to task is his claim that if Miami wins this game, then they can basically make a claim to being 'as good'.... That would be one thing if Miami was on the short side of recent results, but the on-field results don't bear that out. Every football related topic, but especially regarding the Gators, is like taking on Monty Python's knight on the bridge. His attitude would be akin to me saying 'if USC beats us this year, that will really prove something to me.' What I was warning of, and I believe Tom and George touched on this a tad, is that this can be a trap game for you with tremendous downside...Games like this are best to be taken head on and without much verbal jousting. Just go beat them. And how can I possibly bet on a game in which I am pulling for both teams to lose?
and as for twisting the Spurrier thing... I thought he had played them more than once, that is true. At the same time, that doesn't take away from the Gator attitude at the time (here and on other boards) that Miami had never faced Spurrier so this was going to be a whole new day. It turns out, it wasn't...it was just the dawn of a whole new Cane dynasty. So here we are again.. the sun is getting ready to come up on a whole new day... this time its Urban... and unlike the other matchups, Florida is a HUGE favorite..
Speaking of twisting, that was simply not true. That was the year that many fans thought Miami should be in the BCS Championship game, they were beat out by the computers in the end. The Gators were a significant underdog and most Gator fans while thinking we had a chance by no means thought it was going to be a new day. What was a prevailing attitude was that Florida would have beaten Miami though out most of the 90's but we didn't play. Those were the years Florida was going to New Years day bowls every year and if Miami had been good enough we might have met in a bowl. While we are at it let me ask you another question, during Spurrier's years at Florida who do you think had the better teams most of the time, Gators or Noles?
Off the top of my head, I seem to remember the Noles getting the better of the Gators during the SOS years.
BTW <t>to clarify.. that doesn't suggest total domination or anything like that.. I just mean that the Noles beat the Gators a little more often... I can look it up later I suppose.</t>
In their biggest games...and I think nole fans would agree... The #1 ranked noles lost two...count 'em...two national titles in a row to Steve Spurrier and the Gators. And to top it all off both games were in the 1997 calendar year! Now since almost all of you make a point not to give a crap about what we write on Florida you should really thank us for keeping Saint Bobby from claiming FOUR national titles instead of only two. This entire statement is uterly, obfuscated inane crap until the game is completed Sat. night.
No need to look it up Corey, Spurrier had a losing record against FSU. And I agree with you that they were the stronger program from the late 80's through the 90's. My point is that using your logic about Miami having a winning record against us means we shouldn't claim we are the better program right now. I don't agree, FSU was the stronger program during the late 80's and 90's, Miami was a stronger program than the Gators though the middle 80's and early 90's. Even though at that time we had a winning record against both programs. Due to the 4 wins for Miami in the 2000's they now have a winning record against the Gators. However regardless of what you are saying I don't think there is much doubt in most fans minds in Florida and around the country that the Gators are the strongest of the three programs right now. And by the way you used Spurrier's line when he was asked who he wanted to win between Miami and FSU and he said he was rooting for both to lose. So I understand and accept your point of view there. But I'll do something I don't do very ofter and predict we take the Canes to the woodshed Saturday night and then do the same to FSU later in the season unless we happen to lose a high percentage of our starters to injury.
Bill, I happen to agree with you. My point rested solely on the amount of talking being done prior to matching up with someone that 'holds numbers' on you at present time.
Well I'll tell you this Corey, during the time frame I talked about FSU sure did a lot of talking even though the Gators held the series edge. Miami didn't hold the series edge until the 2000's and I think we all know no one talks or have talked more than them. And frankly I don't see that much talk going on from the Gators. But you point is taken.
If it wasn't for my wife's knee replacement we would either be on the way to Florida or already there. But I'll be tuned in tomorrow night. 41 - 14 Gators
I hope not, I took Miami and the points, seems like 20 points is a lot to give Miami, in another pickem where you use points not confidence points.
Amount of talking? One player said something and he was banned from talking to the press the rest of the week. What talking are you talking about? It's contained in this article. Miami-Florida don't mean a thing with regular meeting
I just can't bring myself to root for Miami. Good luck to the Gators. I hope you guys cream the Canes. PJ in Jersey
