Today's report on the news about a possible auto industry bailout stated that a staggering 2.5 million jobs would go down with it.

The thing is...these are the good paying jobs that allow people to put money back into our economy....not those underpaid jobs Corey mentions where a head wage earner of the family can barely afford a cheap house payment much less a new car or big screen TV.

Just because mistakes were made doesn't mean we just throw in the towel.

The auto industry certainly isn't alone in the mistake department.

What the hell are you talking about??

Those 'underpaid' jobs?!?! Can't afford a cheap house payment much less a new car or big screen TV?

You are 100% off-base and absolutely full of it in this regard. In fact, companies in this area are still losing employees to the automotive plants.

Here is also something for you to read:
In Alabama, nonunion auto manufacturers are doing better than those located in heavily unionized states

As one who has lived in California, Nevada, Minnesota, Georgia and Alabama.. I flat throw down the challenge to you on this one.

You act like these people who have these jobs are some banjo picken, ignorant SOBs who just 'stole the good job' from those righteous Union-folk up North who are simply being exploited by 'the man.' Garbage. That is total garbage!

Their quality of life is every bit as good, if not better, than those lived by their counterparts working the same job in other regions.

There's a reason why so many companies and people who come to this area decide to stay... some even move their entire business... and it isn't to 'enslave' the local population..

Do you really hate the South that much or does it just bother you that badly to be wrong that you'd throw your own heritage under the bus?

As I see it the domestic auto industry has two major problems. The first is that there is a perception among the 'American buying public that foreign build autos are better than domestic autos.
The second is even more difficult to solve. The legacy costs of the American auto companies is staggering. Auto workers retire after 30 yrs and recieve substantial pensions. The also recieve lifetime medical benefits. I've read that in the cost of an American car aprox. $2,000 goes to the medical expenses of their retirees. Now how can the domestic industry compete with foreign companies that have never had to face such lucrative union demands and many of those foreign companies are in countries were medical care is universal?
Globalization has made domestic automakers with their "high paying" jobs unable to compete in the market place. Now I know that is because of the Bush administration, I just can't figure out what.

    Gipper,

You make strong points here. The father of the guy I live with is a member of the UAW. Whenever temporary layoffs are coming up, he 'volunteers' to be paid off in the summer and then moves to his house in Alabama where he spends time with family and grandkids... living off of the compensation. He pays his union dues and receives better healthcare than I had working for the state of Minnesota..

Oh well... I am sure it is Bush's fault somehow

Question....growth is measured by a starting point.

Where did these states with per capita income growth start at as a base in comparison to the low growth states?

    T,
    If I didn't have a son to raise correctly, I would. :p

I miss the days of going out drinking on a Tuesday, and waking up Thursday in a new city I never heard of before. Even during my previous life of a treacherous, party animal slouch... living in 4 different locations at a time and just being a downright dirtbag, I refused to take a dime from the government.

    I'm ready for some Obamachex!

Tell your pop he missed my birthday and my feelings are hurt. Tell him I want him to post one of his historical treatises on here. I really used to look forward to those. :)

Corey, tell your dad that I expect him to get through all the footnotes when he's finished. That should take another week or two. :D
