 - Tommy Rees Was horrible again. Thank God it was only Purdue. Several of his passes should have been picked off and taken the other way. Sometimes he throws to the right guy and other times he can't even find the right guy. He knows the offense; he's a coach's son; he handles the ball well; but he has no talent. He will not improve much IMHO. - Jordan Cowart I've never seen a long snapper try to start a fight before. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. First he makes some bad snaps, then he draws a huge penalty? Could one of the smarter kids please draw him a picture before one of the real football players snuffs out his candle? - Cierre Wood Is becoming a major weapon. - O Line Looks very good. Run blocking is great; pass protection very good and there is depth along the entire line. - Goodman returning punts (sigh) - Theo Riddick Which side was he playing for today? Even when he ran his routes correctly, he didn't get open or block anybody...except for that time when he almost blocked Michael Floyd who was trying to... Oh never mind... We don't have a slot receiver. - Harrison Smith Hayseed is a great safety and a very good senior captain. On a team full of good Dbacks, he stands out and leads an attacking defense. - Aaron Lynch I haven't seen anybody block him yet. - Manti He brings the house every play of every game... - Dback depth Not many teams can put a second string out there of Bennett, Collinsworth, Lo Wood and Little McCarthy. They were almost as good as the starters. No wonder Badger hurried home from his mission. That bus is loaded...
Congratulations. Wish I could say it was a good game but unfortunately it went as I expected. JO'Co's comment "Thank God it was only Purdue" sums it up.
I like JoCo's assessmen of this team. This defense has ressusitated Rees over and over again. Nice to see no turnovers this time but Purdue missed some good opportunities to intercept. I like Tommy but he has to improve. Maybe he could work on his fades. They have not improved since Tulsa. (that was not his fault-new freshman - Kelly should have kicked the field goal).
I think for better or worse we are stuck with Tommy Rees this year, it's clear that Kelly prefers him over Crist he must feel there is something there about Tommy that he can work with and win games. Against a better defense he certainly would have had at least 1 pick last night maybe more. Our only hope is that over the season he gets better, and stays healthy. All those calling for Golson and Hendrix have to look no further than the struggles of the Ohio State Qb who was ranked #1 in his recruiting class. I think the best case senario for this year is that the OL and the running game continue to do well, and the defense continues to play well also. That gives us some breathing room with Tommy. Tommy is going to be topic #1 with Irish fans though the rest of the season, every near INT or actual INT or fumble or missing of wide open reciever will cause us a lot of angst. Kelly keeps saying Tommy is improving and Tommy is this and that...don't know if that's Kelly wishing and hoping or actually what he thinks. The Irish win over Purdue was one of those less filling but tastes great wins. Go Irish!
ND <t>Terry, <br/> <br/> I agree with you on Tommy Rees. Unless he gets injured he is our QB for this season. If he were to go down Im sure Kelly would put Crist in. No one wants to see Golson in this offense more than me but he has to be eased in not thrown to the wolves. In actuality Rees should be our backup but thats not the way it worked out. We'll have to get by with him. We have a good defense now and dont need to score 40 a game to win if we can just keep the turnovers and penalties down. <br/> <br/> We also need to get our punt team coverage up to some descent standards. We also NEED a punter.</t>
From the 10/3/2011 South Bend Tribune: I certainly am not trying to change the minds of the "WhyTommyReesWhyNot(insert name)?" crowd. I'm just a guy whose mindset, as long as I have confidence in the coach, is to defer to the coach's judgements rather than the opinions of the fans. God bless the true fans for their devotion to ND. They certainly are entitled to their opinions, but I choose to follow same consistent path I've been on for all the years I've followed ND football, which is, until I am certain that a coach cannot win according to ND standards, I support him 100%. From what I've seen so far, I believe that Brian Kelly is in the process of restoring ND to elite status. If I feel that way, why would I want to wallow in a micromanaging mindset via second-guessing his personnel decisions? There. I feel much better.
Tied John Huart for 10 games in a row with TD passes :!: If I'm not mistaken, Huart only started one season and played in 10 games that year.
The biggest improvement this week was in punt returns. we came in averaging .75 yards per return and doubled that to 1.5 yards per return against Purdue. 8)
You are correct, sir. A one-year wonder, winning the Heisman Trophy in his only season as a starting QB. He now has a highly successful flooring/ counter company in Arizona. My college roommate in Santa Fe used his company's products when building his home down there. See? I told you so. I knew John would improve over time.
ND "Special" Teams are special as in Special Olympics. Some stats to chew on: Punt Returns 76th out of 76 Field Goals 89th out of 99 Kick off ret. 77th out of 100 Net punting 110 out of 120 Punt ret. ydg. 116 out of 119 Kick off ret. yd 71th out of 120 Some other awful stats Turn over margin 117 out of 120 Penalties per game 104 out of 120 Apparently all of our problems this season are because of our QB. RIGHT!!!
