I wonder how many scholarships a year LAX gives out? I wonder how many on the team who get good playing time are walkons.

Men's lacrosse for Div1 get's 12.6 scholarships. The women get 12, which seems odd since so many sports have more for the women to help balance against the 85 football.

Liam Eichenberg has announced for the Irish. Very big pickup, he's a St. Ignatius kid from Cleveland. We do fairly well in Ohio with the Catholic school kids esp in Cincy and Cleveland. I hope that trend continues.

If they can snag Wisc OL Ben Brederson, that will be a hell of a haul for the Irish on the OL.

Nice letter, Sid. All ND sports programs are so easy to root for. There seems to be good people everywhere.

Urban's not slipping, when it's all said and done with Urban will likely have a top 10 recruiting class again.

Yes he was, he was on a lot of lists as one of the top RB in the country. It's hard to figure exactly what the deal was, it seems like he most likely stupidly thought he could run from the cops rather than being caught with alcohol underage, etc. Stupid move.

Haha! I may be the only one who sees the resemblance, but I'll keep it to myself long enough for everyone to see it. By the way, for those who don't know, the photo is Liam Eichenberg, the new OL commit.

Oh I've had several people tell me that Carson resembles that kid who just committed. Carson is 6'2" 230lbs, so he's got a way to go to catch the 6'6" 290lb Eichenberg.

BTW, JOCO. The other day Coach Adcock basically said all of the TEs in the program are too small and not getting it done. Carson volunteered today because he's dying to play TE. Carson even argued that Coach Adcock himself noted just last week Carson was out running most of the LBs in their sprint drills. It appears Jere told him that 'he's got big plans for him on the defensive side of the ball.' So, Carson is pretty bummed out. He's still hanging onto a slimmer of hope that Jere said he'd keep it in mind though.

On another note, Kelly has announced that, in spite of hiring Mike Sanford as O Coordinator, he himself will call plays this season.

Add that to the list of challenges and unknowns which includes:

    punting

Place kicking with a true freshman

Three true safeties on the roster

    Dual QBs

JO'Co and Corey nailed it. I figured the O'Connors would see the resemblance. When I saw the kid's picture, I immediately thought he looked like Carson.

Last night I watched a 15 minute highlight film of the 1981 LSU/ND opener. It was Gerry Faust's first game. It was a great game, the Faust offense looked diverse and powerful, they used multiple formations they ran from the full house, they ran from the I formation, they had one back shifts, they used 2 qb's successfully in Tim Koegel and Blair Kiel. They had Larry Moriarity, Phil Carter and Greg Bell along with Tony Hunter.

They dominated LSU on both lines, the defense looked fast and tough, had Bobby Crable, Dave Duerson, Stacy Toran, and a lot more.

You had to figure after that game that Faust was the real deal. Of course it turns out that was the high point for him. I think the Irish went to #1 after that game. Then reality hit and that '81 finished at 5-6.

Only a few more high points for Faust, including beating Michigan and Bo Schembechler after Bo said he'd never lose to a High School coach. That was the game that Bo refused to shake Faust's hand after the game.

Oh well, the Faust era was great for 1 game.

Gerry Faust was arguably the best high school coach in Ohio football history as well as the consumate gentleman. I attended two football coaching seminars he chaired and he was all about sharing his knowledge. His Moeller teams not only vanquished everyone in Ohio but every other team they played from Los Angeles to New Orleans to Detroit to Philadelphia.

I guess he wasn't cut out to be a college coach but he was as good a college recruiter as ever coached in South Bend.

By the way, my father played for his father at Dayton Chaminade HS from 1937-40.

I wanted Faust to be successful, but it wasn't meant to be. I always support the coach 100% until there comes a time when even I have to exit the bandwagon. With Faust, it was the Purdue game at their stadium in what turned out to be his last season. I was at the game. Up to that point, he had been criticized for being disorganized on the sideline. We had two successive penalties for the incorrect number of players on the field. That was the last straw for me.

George is correct that he is a real gentleman. He recruited a teammate of my son while at Akron. The kid's dad, a close personal friend and former HS coach, praised him as a straightforward and likeable person. The kid ended up at the Air Force Academy.

I have heard lots of speculation on why he failed.

Some of it was that he had a very large and very good staff by HS standards. Also that he ran a tight ship.

When he got to ND his staff, at least initially was not up to college standards and that he was so enthralled by being a Notre Dame that he changed his coaching style and wanted to be friends with the players. Anyway he was just out of his element. Too bad, Devine left him a lot of talent and if he could have coached it to a top 10 finish and a bowl win, he'd have been off and running and just killed it on the recruiting trail. But he didn't and that's history now.
