Corey, Since we were both relatively sober for that game, can you remember who that second QB was/is?
Can't put anything past Sid! Helton received a minor knee sprain in the game before Tenn vs Florida. Since Todd was a senior and had a career in baseball in his future, Fulmer sat him the rest of the year and Peyton got his first "start" in the Florida game. However, he shared time with Stewart that wound up transfering to TAMU.
Helton <t>Hey fellas,<br/> <br/> Fired up for this year! Heading down to GTech in a few weeks. Should be fun, especially if I can get a few rounds in. Re: Helton. My roomie at the time played baseball for ND and played against Helton at an early season game at the old Kingdome. Helton apparently hit a 500 foot homer against them that was unreal. He said the only one he ever saw hit a ball like that was Darren Dreifort who was unbelievable at Wichita State as both a hitter and pitcher. He used to rip HRs in his spare time and then throw high 90s in the 9th inning as their closer in the 40 degree Wichita spring. Surprised he never really dominated in either role at the MLB level. <br/> <br/> I hope the reports on Aldridge are wrong, but it sounds like he's never been the same since his Junior year of HS when he was a manchild. I do know this...having seen two ND players in person this summer (Zibby at MSG and Rhema McKnight at a club in South Bend), Mr. Mendoza is doin a helluva job in that weight room! Here's hoping all that off season work pays dividends for the boys this September. <br/> <br/> Should be an interesting year. I don't know that any team feels good this year with what they have back. Whether it's our D, OSU's new starters, OU without Bomar, Texas without Vince Young, or SC with all their new skill guys, it just seems like nobody is that confident about some part of their team. Of all the teams I'm worried about one of the Big East teams like Louisville and West Va running the table and somebody else sneaking into the top 2 with an undefeated regular season. Should be fun to watch, especially if we make it out of September undefeated.<br/> <br/> Commish</t>
Speaking of Todd Helton, he and his Colorado Rockies are up on the Cubbies 7 - 1 in the third inning. So far, Todd has had two at bats and has two hits and scored two runs.
You lead such a tough life Commish, will there be a Miss Coppertone contest to judge or anything like that to go with the game? I too am cautiously optomistic about the Irish. We have our best group of skill players in a very long time, our OL is thin and the backups are young. But in reading about the offseason work I have confidence that we will be a stronger OL this year. For me it all gets down to will the defense be improved this year. Well that and the "Luck of the Irish"! Terry
Commish, please visit us more often. Being "on the circuit" you can provide us wannabes with valuable information.
Clue #1 that he is from Caliyfornia. Clue #2 I hope the kid developes into a big time hitter this year, we are very young at LB this year. I heard Weis say that with the 4-3 that our LB's don't have to be big just fast, that if you play a 3-4 that you need big LB's. If he's bigger than 225 I hope he has maintained his speed. See you dudes later.
as a result of a birthday surprise <t>i will be at the GTech game. I can't be in town until Saturday though due to work related commitments. It would appear that I can't meet up on the links for a round, but if you're looking for a liquid round at the Varsity before the game, then hit me up Commish.</t>
Oh and Tom <t>the Tennessee QB in the game I saw was Peyton Manning. The QB who went down giving Manning his shot was Todd Helton.<br/> <br/> The greatest UT QB name of all-time is Jim Boob Cooter. Regardless of recent troubles, he should be immediately inducted into the Vol Hall of Fame just for having that name.<br/> <br/> If memory serves correct, the UCLA player of the game was Tennessee punter who nearly kicked UCLA back into the come back of the year.</t>
Corey We were at that game with you. If you remember, Tom had to keep me from killing that punter and Coach Phil. Even with a win I was hopping mad. <G> Cindy
One thing that has me optomistic, more so than the returning talent on offense. That is Sr. leadership, we've learned through Sids contacts in the past that Sr. leadership is very important, talent is great...but if there is no leadership then it's all going to fall apart. Quinn, JeffS,Ryan Harris, Derek Landri, Laws, Morton, the Duke. Some great leaders on that team and even though TommyZ is not a Sr, I think he's probably right there with the Seniors. Terry
ND preseason <r>After listening to todays Charlie Weis after-practice interview you don't have to read to far between the lines anymore to figure out that Sam Young will probably end up as a starter his freshman season on the OL. He just seems to be impressing everyone on the staff.<br/> <br/> Anyone else a little surprised at how well Travis Thomas seems to be coming along at LB?<br/> <br/> Hey Corey, are you coming to the UCLA game in South Bend this year? <E></E></r>
Young will see a lot of time... probably be a starter in short order. Look for some of the Freshmen DBs to play a lot... Walls for sure. LBs will be small but very fast... could be Vernaglia's chance to shine. Two question marks: Steady pressure on the QB and the kicking game. Everything else appears to be about just right.
 re: size of ND LBs MLBs Maurice Crum 6'0" 220 So Scott Smith 6'3" 242 So Toryan Smith 6'0" 230 Fr Nick Borsetti 6'4" 235 Sr WLB Travis Thomas 6'0" Sr Joe Brockington 6'1" 220 Sr Morrice Richardson 6'2" 228 Fr SLB Anthony Vernaglia 6'3" 230 Jr Mitchell Thomas 6'3" 232 Sr Steve Quinn 6'2" 215 The younger they are, the faster they are.
