ND <r>Well out of respect for our Miami fans here on the board I will refrain from any harsh remarks about what I think the "U" should have been handed down as far as penalties for their actions. I too think they got off WAY to easy but I also agree with RECane, it took waaaaaaay to long for them to hand down the sanctions. All of these decisions seem to be too much or too little. They never seem to fit the crime. <br/> <br/> On the other hand, I'm ready for the Irish to play them again. Between the SunBowl and last year in Chicago, we've kick their butts all over the field. Not even close. <E></E></r>
Thank you Tim, I know you have no love for Miami and appreciate the honesty. And you are being kind it was worse than a butt kicking, hopefully we can at least make it a game the next time we play...
:? I was going to post something..., butt I got distracted... Oh yeah, USC is in full melt-down mode out here over this Miami business. It all comes just after the "unfair" loss to Notre Dame caused by the penalties they had to pay...and Miami just poached one of the recruits they had stashed too... Oh! The humanity!
Just another case of the NCAA doing whatever it wants to, whenever it wants to. Same old story. RECcane, at least it's over and you can move on.
As to USC and their meltdown The U early on admitted violations and self imposed sanctions. The arrogant bastards of Troy especially Mike Garrett stonewalled and refused to own up to anything. Screw 'em.
I do want to say that while I think Miami got of lightly compared to others, the whole thing has been a cluster F and I'm glad it's over. Ralph is a great fan, has always wanted his team to do the right thing and I respect that and hope that going forward Ralph has a great team to root for and a coach who does things the right way.
You guys think you get confused at your age try 76! But then I bowled a 252 yesterday. As far as banned from Bowls Miami has already taken the last two years as self punishment. Could have been worse but the NCAA put themselves in a position where they were compromised, time for all of us to move on.
Gip's right. USC's arrogance made their whole situation worse. Had a guy like Hadan been running the show at the time, they would have walked. They will make a comparison to the Miami case, but it's off center at best. At USC, the NCAA was helped greatly by legally obtained court documents of a lawsuit that could have gone away had ANYONE simply bought out the guy Bush screwed over. Instead, Bush didn't (showing he didn't care about anyone), no one in the USC community did. They essentially dared the guy to sue, and he did. All the NCAA had to do was read Yahoo or pick up the morning paper. With the Miami case, they illegally obtained documents and testimony. They compromised themselves and the system. For as much as I gripe about the NCAA, I wouldn't mind them having a subpoena like power that forced participating schools, and their players, to turn over relevant documentation. The problem is, they can't. If they could, a whole lot of people would be in trouble. The Auburn case is a prime example of that. No matter how fishy the whole thing just smelled, there was a barrier there in which the school could say 'We don't know, you have to ask the family.' And of course, the family doesn't have to say a thing. The fact that it was proven the dad was shopping his kid elsewhere doesn't prove Auburn was the winning bidder. Of course, in order to believe the NCAA/Auburn, you have to accept that a father was holding a documented highest bidder auction for the services of his son and his boy wound up going to the only place that wouldn't pay him...despite the school's own long and documented history of paying players. Without cheating/breaking the law, the NCAA couldn't really prove anything. They would have had full cooperation from the school. There would have been a suspicious looking situation but a clear disconnect from the University and this all would have just gone away with a slap on the wrist.
